Quotable Kid - Those Close To The Man Share Their Favorite Kid Rock Memories

Posted by WebCrew
January 13, 2011

"More than anything, I'm delighted he lived this long."

— Jimmy Kimmel, host of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

"I first met Bob back in the early '90s, he was down at White Room Studios ... He would get studio time in exchange for being the janitor, which meant sweeping up and scrubbing out the toilet. Bob brought a turntable and a crate of records up to the Bear's Den in Berkley and jammed with the Howling Diablos, he showed up every week after that and we always had a great time making music."

— Tino Gross, Howling Diablos

"He's a rock star to the core, for sure, but he's also a really sweet guy and a great rep for Detroit. "

— Erin Cummings, Detroit 1-8-7 actress

"In 1996, we were sitting in his basement listening to records. He put on Folsom Prison Blues ... we were like wtf?? He said 'See, country is just like rap. They sing about shooting guns, getting wasted and beating the shit out of dudes!'

— Mark EP, DJ and producer

"Not only has he become the biggest thing in Detroit, he has become one of the biggest names on the planet. And most importantly, he has not forgotten where he came from. He has been a loyal friend over the years and a staunch supporter of the 'D.' I appreciate all the shows he did at the Emerald for me, and I am proud to say I know him."

— Joe Nieporte

"It was probably 1999 ... Bob was technically a studio intern, but he spent most of the time working on his own music. Anyway, he was working on a song, and a bunch of us at the studio were giving him shit about it: 'Who wants to hear a song about a cowboy?!' In hindsight, I guess a lot of people would."

— Al Sutton, Kid Rock's longtime recording engineer and owner of Rustbelt Studios

"We were backstage after one of his shows, and there's probably about eight people hanging out, including a group of girls. And in this group is one girl, it was clear she wanted attention. She keeps going 'Rock star, Rock star, I'm bored.' Now, this is 10 minutes after Rock just got off stage. Rock looks at her and asks, 'You like to be entertained?' And she says, 'Yes, Rock star, I'm bored.' And Rock, in his perfect Kid Rock voice says, 'You didn't see the show?' Everyone started dying, his timing and delivery was perfect.

— JB Carlin, director of the "Picture" video

"When he told me that Axl Rose called him and invited him to New York to Axl's show, knowing that I'm a huge Axl Rose fan, Rock said 'I got a seat on the jet. You want to go?' We ended up hanging out for three days straight, leaving the clubs at 11 in the morning."

— Mikey Eckstein, Embarco Management

"A work ethic that defies reason; talent beyond description; and a damn good guy."

— Arthur Penhallow Jr., Punch Enterprises

"Lots of hanging out around the crib making amazing music and partying my ass off ... thoroughly peppered with private jets to Nashville to hang with Hank and weekends in NYC to roll with Axl. For a kid that just came from flipping burgers, this was the most magical time in my life."

— Ty Stone, musician

"The first time I ever saw Bob perform was on MTV for 1999's Woodstock. I was 14. Not only did he leave my jaw on the floor with his swagger and stage presence, but it was one of the first times I heard something new from my generation that made me excited for music's future."

Can't wait to see you again in the D. Comerica Park August 13th . Saw you in Jan at Ford Field, cannot believe how much I loved the whole concert from beginning to the too soon end. Would have sat there for the exact same thing over again. Not one boring or even dull moment. Boyfriend complains that I never play any other music, but yours. I said " is there other music"? Nothing that moves me like yours does. It is beautiful, memorable and somewhat haunting. I remember my first love in "all summer long". Ages ago, but i still remember like it was yesterday!!!! Thanks for coming home to Detroit in time to celebrate my birthday (Aug 20) Love you Bobby!!!!

Forty is nothing,Kid...it just keeps going, it's only a number and you dang sure don't look or act 40!! You could have slipped your autograph under my door like I asked. Watched ya play blackjack...too much security!!

Kid is great at what he does. seen about 10 of his shows when i lived in detroit. Ticket prices and gas prices make it hard these days and he doesnt come to my area for as many nights. Thats what i get for moving here. I want to go back home but wife wont move. She really wants to see a show so this year im gonna hafta get tickets either to Chicago(hate that town), or Milwaukee. Shows are always great no matter where they are

Well, I don't know Bob personally but I have seen him perform many times and had his arm around me and let me tell you what: He is a kick ass performer and entertainer. He always has the crowd eating out of his hands. He is like the energizer bunny, he never runs out of energy and his moves are trance makers. And what a beautiful smile he has. He is a great guy as far as I am concerned. Lots of fun to be around and never a dull moment. Roll Me Away, Bob.

Loved seeing you with the legend, Bob Seger in Nashville.

I have never met, nor will I probably ever meet Kid Rock. However, I'd like to think I know the man. If you listen to his music, you will know this man. I cannot think of another artist, that you can hear grow up on his records. In a way, to me, he is a mirror of his generation. From rap to rock to country, his growth is inspiring. I'm proud to say I've seen him around ten times and have never been disappointed leaving a show. Thank you Kid for being who you are and sharing it with us.

I remember back in 1995 when me and kid rock first met in our small town of Romeo Michigan. Its a small town next to armada and like shelby. We used to play our guitars in the gravel pits off of mound rd when we were fishing for pike and drinking orange faygo. Those were the good ol days i tell ya, back when me and kid were made to be famous. I always knew he would make it big and well as knowing my own special traits i withheld in my own soul. we were born free to entertain the world with our godly gifts. Pauly c from Romeo

I was going through a divorce in 1999 and Kid Rock's music helped get me through that sad and scary time. His lyrics gave me confidence that everything was going to be alright and his music helped me dance again. Happy 40th, Bobby!

I remember all those concerts before the famous Kid Rock emerged, the best memory was the video taping at the State Theatre in Detroit for Bullgod, when Kid jumped into the crowd I grabbed his hand and one of his rings slipped off his finger. The best part was returning it back to him at the end of the night. I really miss the small clubs and nine dollar concert tix that shaped so many memories of my youth, while constantly wondering when the next concert was and anticipating all the fun to be had! I cant believe your 40!

Love this! I agree with Shannon ..... When I seen him perform on Woodstock 1999. I fell in love and have been a hardcore fan ever since. He was unbelievable. I told my husband how awesome I thought he was and he said he had his CD and he thought I wouldn't like it cuz he talks about ho's, bitches..etc.. Um...that's what I loved. His attitude. I listened to DWAC forever. And I haven't stopped loving him since. Love you!!! Your FOREVER fan- Dana

Happy, happy, Early Birthday may this be the best yet!!! It's not very often an artist takes the time to hang out and actually care about his Fans as Kid does He remains true to them as well as to himself ...that speaks volumes to me it's rare so very rare! I feel his new Album Born Free is finally Kid Rock coming home to his best music to date such an amazing Raw talent and songs that reach in and wrap around your heart and soul...That to me says it all when an Artist can do that ..I bought the Vinyl and Born Free will proudly be displayed with my Beatles, Stones , Elvis and Zepplin. Thanks Bob for being who you are never change ..I hope I'm lucky enough to meet you someday . Love Nashville Can't wait to see the show ! God Bless and keep Rockin On!!!

I have met Bob on several occassions over the past few years. His talent is not to be ignored. My first meeting was backstage at a show in Toronto with The Trailer Park Boys. I remember thinking how freakin' nice he was. After that, I was lucky enough to hang with him at his home in Detroit, ( where I actually got to be part of a jam session in his studio - I played the tambourine ), randomly run into him at a wicked bar called "Machine Shop" in Troy Michigan and party on his tour bus + hotel after he opened for Bon Jovi in Toronto. The man is one of the most genuine, down to earth, solid human beings I have ever met. His talent is enormous. I dare say, so is his heart. You can't mention Detroit without Kid Rock being part of the conversation. Everyone should take a lesson from Bob on how to be a real Rock Star. Because he truly is. We thank you for your music and rocking our world. Happy Happy Birthday Bob.
