So what was it like to be on the bill for "The Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear"?

It was a lot of fun. The Rally was billed as a non-political event, which I liked. Jon Stewart called me and we talked without any managers or anything. He's a great guy. He sent me a care package from 2nd Avenue Deli in New York. First time I ever had kosher food! That corned beef sandwich on rye was rockin'. I'm a fan of Colbert, Stewart and Megyn Kelly. I like to stay well rounded.

You're a man with deep roots in rock, rap and country at a time when the music world feels so fragmented. Is it fair to say that you're a uniter, not a divider?

Rev Run [of Run DMC fame] gave me one of the most meaningful compliments I ever. He said, "I never met anyone who brings people together like you do. That's what you do." That's high praise, especially from a great man like him. So I'm going to try and stay on that path. I just try to stay true to myself, and speak my mind -- even when it gets me in trouble, like when I opened my big mouth about Steven Tyler and American Idol. Hey, I gotta be me.

Born Free reminds me of the great Bob Seger albums that I grew up listening to back when I was a kid in the Seventies. Bob appears on the album, along with Sheryl Crow on the track "Collide." Is it fair to say that Bob Seger help set the template for what you're doing now?

Absolutely. Not only is Bob Seger a role model for me musically -- when I was growing up Bob's records led me back to all the music that inspired him too. I really discovered the music of Stax, Chuck Berry, and Muscle Shoals through Bob. Loving what Bob does led me to dig back into music history enough to experience some of the amazing music that moved him growing up. Learning that music became my homework. Frankly it's the only homework that I've ever successfully done. My biggest dream is that someday some kid will like what I do enough to dig back through my albums, then Bob's records and then back into the past just like I did with him.

How was the relationship working with Rick Rubin as your producer on Born Free?

It was a very successful relationship. Hell, who am I kidding, it's one of the only successful relationships I've ever had! Rick's been a friend and advised me before, and we talked last time about working together on my previous album. But we knew our time would come eventually. So it was like, "Rick, let me get on the highway and then you can drive us both home." Working with Rick was great.

From the time you played me "Born Free" back in Detroit, I could tell this song and the new album are very important to you.

You're right. They are. It's a strange time to be putting music out, and it's my job to try and get this music out to the people who care. My main goal is to make music that stands the test of time. If I'm honest with myself, what I really hope is that "Born Free" will become a classic. It may never be a big hit, but that's okay because some of the greatest records of all time weren't the biggest hits right away. Hell, "Family Tradition" by Hank Williams, Jr. only reached #4 on the country charts and it doesn't get better than that song. Right before my album came out this week, I was having a bad day. I felt like I had to "Slow My Roll" -- to steal a title from myself. So I came into my recording studio and I saw one of the possessions that I most treasure. It's an album that the great Johnny Cash took the time to send me. On it he wrote, "To Kid Rock, Thanks for keeping the music going. A Fan, Johnny Cash." That's what it's all about now -- keeping the music going.

Here I sit, Just got my two kids to bed and its 10:00pm, Michigan time. Just picked up the new cd while grocery shopping with the kids. I look back as I listen to this album and think of all the music Kid Rock has put out and all the life experiences I have had while listening to each and every album. From sneaking in to a small show in the D when I was 16 (2 days after I got my drivers license) to partying up at Michigan Tech till the sunrise, riding my hog on the California Coast when I was 25, rocking out to AMEN at Boyne Mountain and now settled in as a father at 31 here in Petoskey, MI. Your music just grows with me and as much as I love other artists out there, no other artist's music has rung as the anthem to my life like Kid Rock. Keep it coming, you and I have many years to go before the sun sets on us and our legacies.

Love the new CD and am anxiously awaitng the tour. I have enjoyed watching and listening to you evolve as a musical artist. Johnny Cash knew something good when he heard it. You had me hooked the first time I heard "God Know". Your music soothes me when I am down and gets my motor running when I am feeling frisky. Thanks

Rob your got class bro. you do you a fabulous job as a single parent, and your fans proud for staying true to you. i do own with pride your "Born Free" cd. in your video "Born Free" you captured the beauty of Michigans beatifull coast line, emerald green lakes, and her inland beauty as well. being from kalamazoo mi i can appreciate that. i beleive you have a heart, in the lyrics to the song the word HOME is used. heres ya education: take each begining letter, to the name of the lakes. and it spells a word. H (huron), O (ontario), M (lake michigan), E (errie) that spells HOME and thats what michigan is to any from there.ohh by the way, i taught my teachers what home was too. folks do your self a favor, buy this cd, and go see his show. right now the music buss, is shacky while this album is rooted, fertile, and bad ass.peace

I have to say with as much as I like Born Free....I think I'm getting more attached to Racing Father Time ;) Midwest Falls makes me sad at the begining, then makes me smile by the end =) Lonely Road of faith gets me teary every time I listen to it, and Forty makes me laugh every time ;) I love the emotional roller coaster ride Racing Father Time gives me =) Thank you Robert James for making me smile, cry, and laugh all in one little CD ;)

Am listening to Born Free at work right now. Unbelievably I don't have a cd player in my car. I normally don't want Christmas presents, but this year the one thing I want is a new stereo in my car so I can listen to your music on my 1 hour + commute to and from work everyday! I would actually enjoy my commute! :)

Haha @ Rocksavedmysoul.. I hear ya, its like we are overly territorial about a man and his music that we have loved from the first song, that we personally, heard him sing.. but he was out there long before I heard COWBOY ( lol ) .. so I welcome all the new fans with a hope that they will not buy out all the Peoria pit passes before I GET MINE !!! ~_- Ahhh, but for our idol, Bobby---->> Slow yer Roll bebe, take a much needed long break.. we will ALL be here waiting, with ALL the new lyrics memorized, to ROCK with you in 2011..

People for generations will look back through your catalog of music and be inspired. Your ability to write such amazing music that touches so many people is a talent that does bring people together; a talent that many artists don't have. How does it feel to be a Rock n' Roll Jesus? I've listened to Born Free a good dozen times in the last few days. Most of the songs warm my heart and make me smile, "When it Rains" warms my heart and makes me cry. You have it baby!

The first time I thought Kid Rock was cool, was when I seen him with a ole school Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band t-shirt in some magazine photo. Bob Seger is my music love, so to have you say those awesome words about him, just makes me glow! And, I really like When it Rains, it sounds a lot like a Bob Seger tune, but it's you! Love it.

Damn, with the release of Born Free, now the whole world knows about you- not just us in the KRC. I really do hate to share.

Because music is your soul, you touch the very core of my being. Never has an artist before or since you been able to nail all genre's of music the way you do. Growing up with elderly parents and older brothers and sisters, I was fortunate enough to be exposed to all types of music, although rock was my personal fave. I loved them all and when asked what is my favorite type of music, I can honestly say "all of it". You are are gift Kid, never change you!

You are definitely keeping the music going! I love and buy everything you put out! Honestly in my CD player I have six of your CD's. I listen to you on my way to work everyday. I am going to the hospital this morning to welcome my first Grandbaby into this world. As I am driving I will be listening to Care because I can't think of a more appropriate song to welcome a baby into this world. Thanks for all you do and for giving us an album that let's us see into your heart. You have truly outdone yourself and given your fans the music that is going to touch our lives forever. Roll on Kid.....

That's right Bob! Keep doing and saying what you think! No matter what! If you wanna be like Britney Spears you can say what record companies tells you to say, but you're BETTER than Britney Spears! So don't worry about those stupid persons.. just say whatever you feel. It might be right or it might be wrong, but that's the real Kid Rock. And people who don't like you... well, they can suck your d*ck :D

I love this album. I think it's his best :)

AMEN to that! Born Free will stand the test of time..it is real feel good music! To me that's what it's all about..keeping it real and being able to touch at every emotion you might be feeling. From being proud to be an American, to actually Caring about someone/something. Then we all love our weekends and what better way to say Screw You to the work week than God Bless Saturday! At some point in our life we've all experienced that break up where there was nothing else to lose...what else can you do but Rock On! Then a good foot stompin song that makes you just wanna get up and dance..Rock Bottom Blues! Oh yeah I couldn't help myself..turned it up and just danced! That's feel good music! I am a fan forever and wouldn't have it any other way!
