Earlier this year, the Rick Rubin-produced, folk-country Born Free followed suit. The album features Zac Brown on “Flyin’ High,” Trace Adkins on “Rock Bottom Blues” and, on the standout track “Collide,” both Sheryl Crow and Rock’s childhood idol, Bob Seger.

And that’s just the musical side of things. Watching the economy of Detroit — and the nation as a whole — go bust, Kid Rock decided to get involved. First, he rescued, then reinvigorated, failing Michigan clothing company Made In Detroit, putting a whole new staff back to work with street-smart designs.

“We even have a Rosie the Riveter shirt on our site,” he says. “That was a company that was close to me when I was growing up, but it was going bankrupt and being sold. So I went and bought it, just because I didn’t want to see it die. And I’m not making a dime from it, not a penny, not that I don’t plan to one day. But right now I’m trying to show that there’s some good shit going on in Michigan, and there are ways that we can help out and actually have fun while we’re doing it.” Which was also the thinking behind Kid Rock launching his own signature beer, Badass American Lager, brewed locally with water from the Saginaw aquifer. In this case, he started the line out of spite. “I was angry that Budweiser, Coors and some of our greatest American companies sold out, at a time when this country needed them most,” he vents. “I don’t know about a lot of things, but I know about music, and I know about beer. So I came up with one with no aftertaste, no frills. You don’t need to put a lemon in it. Our ads feature a Badass bottle with this old rusted-out truck with no tires sitting on it, and it says ‘That’s the only way you’ll ever see a lemon on it!

Keeping it close to home is what I love about Kid Rock. I'm a hometown kinda girl and to me there's no place like home. Home is where the heart is. Kid Rock has always hit home for me....I've been just dreaming of hitting a home run with him someday. I'll take first base at this point! ha,ha,ha......while I'm still warm.

It's me Bobbie Jean - reading through these w/ my niece - she is cracking up on the lemon joke! I'll be back tomorrow for me, but I thought it would be good for her to read about another helping others... she is 14 & inspired, look on her face is beautiful, TY for all You do! :)

Love you, Bob Ritchie! If all the entertainers, actors, etc who have been so richly blessed would do just a little of what you are doing I think there could be a huge impact for the good in this country. Some of us can only CARE but even with few funds we can give out of what we have. Everybody should be paying it forward in some way. Love from way up north in California (where it snows!)

I too would love to be able to do those kind things, perhaps one day I will be able to do so. It's always a good thing to give back and do nice things for others. Way to Go!

Once again Bob is doin good for everyone. He never stops. Im proud to be a die hard fan, I am not from Michigan but have many beautiful and truly real friends in Michigan and spend lots of my time in Michigan. Bob no matter wheree you go, or what you do it will always make me proud to be a fan for life. Keep up the good work Bob, music heart and soul you have it all. As for the Kid Rock haters, as far as I am concerned you can all go to hell. You truly dont know a real hero if you hate Kid Rock. He has come through many times to help out people in need, because he is all heart. If you cant see his heart then you are more than blind, you are all totally stupid and need to get a real life. If some of the other entertainers were to come forward and give help, the world would be a better place. you are a true Hero Bob Ritchie, truly amazing person and dont ever let the haters comments get to you. They are not worth the time or effort to listen to them. I sure and hell dont give two shits for what the haters say, they are wanting attention nothing more. Take care Bob, hope you and your family have an amzing xmas. You truly deserve it. God Bless.

All Kid Rock haters and people who are able to help make a difference in their communities should pay more attention to the remarkable things he has done for Detroit and across this country. What a great guy with a big heart.

We finally got a chance to try a BadAss Beer at your concert in NYC. A wonderful fan had brought some back from concert in Detroit and shared with us for my husbands 50th birthday. He LOVED it!! (I myself stick to the Red Stag) We are northeasters waiting for it to be available here in Vermont, NHampshire or somewhere close! Please!

So glad to see you supporting Detroit and Michigan. My husband and I were born and raised in Michigan and we love the state. My husband is currently active duty military and in Iraq right now. We only have 2 more years left in the Navy, then plan to retire and move back to Michigan. It's scary because we need to find jobs and support our family and we know Michigan is struggling. But.... we both love Michigan and wouldn't live anywhere else. (We move every 2 1/2 years and have been counting down the days until our last move to Michigan!) Thank you Kid Rock for your ongoing support and dedication to the military and to the great state of Michigan. I love reading all the wonderful things you've done to bring Michigan (and Detroit) back to the great state that it is. And..... a tremendous thank you for your support for our men and women serving in the military. I've been a Navy wife for 16 years and am very proud of my husband and his dedication to his country. Good news for us to share is that we just found out that Phil will be home for Christmas. Don't have an exact date right now, but the important thing is that very soon our family will be together and under the same roof. Our first goal when we move back to Michigan..... go to a Kid Rock concert. My husband and I have never been to one of your concerts, but we will!!!! Thank you again and God Bless!

Mr. Rock, you do indeed rock. You have always supported the Veterans, You've always supported your country, and you are now supporting your local community. Truly a man worthy of this Veteran's respect. Not many performers get that from me. Thank you for being who you are. Proud Veteran of the 82nd Abn Div.
