Kenmore East music student Sam Speciale has been using a 1950’s style jazz trombone that’s much older than most of the staff at his high school.

The 17-year-old senior was in desperate need of a modern, new trombone with a symphonic horn, an extra rotor valve, and deeper sound, for college next year. His more than 60-year old trombone, which he rents for 30-dollars per year, is not sufficient for playing at the college level.

Little did Speciale know that he will in fact be heading to college next year with a brand new trombone thanks to one the world’s best know rock, rap, and country crossover musicians.

Prior to “Kid Rock’s concert at the Town Ballroom on Sunday, November 20th, 2011, the Detroit born rocker held a press conference where he donated a $5,000 music scholarship to three Kenmore East High School students, including Speciale, through the Music is Art program. Proceeds from his current concert tour are being donated through the “Kid Rock Foundation.”

Speciale along with Kenmore East High School music students Richard Gavadin and Brendon Grabowski, will split the $5,000 music scholarship. Speciale will receive a brand new trombone. The remaining funds will be split so the three can receive private lessons from a musical professional.

“I’m a high school student. I can’t afford a new trombone. There’s no way I can use the one I have now at college. I’m thrilled with getting a new instrument. What Kid Rock is doing, donating money from all his concerts to students who want to be as famous as he is, is just great,” added Speciale.

“It was a thrill for our students just to be able to meet a globally known rock legend. It is even greater that they can become better musicians thanks to Kid Rock’s generosity,” said Kenmore East High School Band Director and Music Teacher Phil Aguglia.

March is reading month and Roosevelt Primary School (Grades K-3) in Ferndale would like to invite you to be a "Mystery" guest for our Guest Reader Day on March 16. However, we would happily have you as a guest reader for any day your are available in March. Guests are invited to spend the day reading to classes or drop in for 1 or 2...whatever their schedule will allow. We are trying to find "famous" guests and I think you fit the bill way more than the the usual guests like the school superintendent, a city councilman, etc. Plus, my third grader thinks your cool. Please contact me at mbeveridge@kohp.com or you can contact Dina Rocheleau, principal, or Marie Gearing, School Secretary at (248) 548-1950. Thank you.

Started rockin with u in 1999 when my son was born sick. He loved rockin and bouncing 2 your tunes on MTV at the hospital until he died 7/29/10. Your music has kept me going. Moved from the country and now live 2 blocks from ken more east where my step kids will attend next year. Your generosity 2 their music dept took the town ballroom concert from amazing 2 emotional when I saw u on the front page of our local paper with the kids. Keep up the good works and god bless u in 2012 bobby!

It's cool of Kid to buy these guys some new brass.....It reminds me of the new comtemporary choir I'm in at my church. We have 8th graders and all ages playing brass and other instruments. Very thoughtful Kid! Good job! Our guys need some fine tuning, but we are getting some good feedback so far. Music is a world within itself, it's a language we all understand...... With an equal opportunity for all to sing dance and clap their hands.....Sir Duke, Stevie Wonder.

I was at the town ballroom and agree, what a incredible show. It made my birthday and was worth all the issues getting in the show, but i agree with the way tickets were handled and to give back like that is rare and earned allot of respect from buffalo and all of western ny. So thank you and hope to see you soon

The Town Ballroom show had to be one of the best Kid Rock shows that I've ever seen! Rockin great time for sure!! I felt privileged to be there and I danced my ass off!! :) It was even better to know that the money from the tix was going to help people who need it. Being a teacher, I see the need to replace outdated equipment all the time. Budget cuts continually keep our kids from the things they need to reach their potential and realize dreams. THANK YOU for the things your foundation does to support those who truly need it. YOU are a blessing to this world. XOXOXOXO Until next time....;)
