Make It Count

In his battle with cancer, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc., said: “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything—all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure—these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.” His suffering influenced the choices he made.

In contrast, the apostle Peter wanted to motivate his readers to use their suffering to make their lives count for eternity. And he wanted Jesus’ suffering and death to inspire them to accept the spiritual conflict and persecution that would result from bearing the name of Jesus. Because they loved Jesus, suffering was going to be normative. Jesus’ suffering was to serve as motivation to give up sinful passions and to be obedient to the will of God (1 Peter 4:1-2). If their lives were going to count for eternity, they needed to stop indulging in fleeting pleasures and instead exhaust their lives on what pleased God.

Remembering that Jesus suffered and died to forgive our sins is the most important thought we have to inspire us to make godly choices today and to make our lives count for eternity.

Jesus, You have suffered and died to forgive our sin;
may Your death and resurrection inspire us to never
return to where we’ve been. Help us in our resolve
to live for Your will alone.

Thoughts On Rain

When torrential downpours beat on the heads of my newly planted petunias, I felt bad for them. I wanted to bring them inside to shelter them from the storm. By the time the rain stopped, their little faces were bowed to the ground from the weight of the water. They looked sad and weak. Within a few hours, however, they perked up and turned their heads skyward. By the next day, they were standing straight and strong.

What a transformation! After pounding them on the head, the rain dripped from their leaves, soaked into the soil, and came up through their stalks, giving them the strength to stand straight.

Because I prefer sunshine, I get annoyed when rain spoils my outdoor plans. I sometimes wrongly think of rain as something negative. But anyone who has experienced drought knows that rain is a blessing. It nourishes the earth for the benefit of both the just and the unjust (Matt. 5:45).

Even when the storms of life hit so hard that we nearly break from the force, the “rain” is not an enemy. Our loving God has allowed it to make us stronger. He uses the water that batters us on the outside to build us up on the inside, so we may stand straight and strong.

Lord, we know that we don’t need to fear the storms
of life. Because You are good, we can trust You
to use even our hard times to build our faith in You.
We lean on You now.

First Things First

First things first, we say. And the first thing in all of life is to know God and enjoy Him.

Acknowledging and knowing God helps us to become what we were meant to be. Here is King David’s counsel to his son Solomon: “Know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind” (1 Chron. 28:9).

Remember, God can be known. He is a Person, not a logical or theological concept. He thinks, wills, enjoys, feels, loves, and desires as any person does. A. W. Tozer writes, “He is a person and can be known in increasing degrees of intimacy as we prepare our hearts for the wonder of it.” Ah, there’s the rub: We must “prepare our hearts.”

The Lord is not playing hard to know; those who want to know Him can. He will not foist His love on us, but He does wait patiently, for He wants to be known by you. Knowing Him is the first thing in life.

He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joys we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known.

Can’t Do Everything

Four-year-old Eliana was helping her mom pick up some of Eliana’s things before bedtime. When Mommy told her to put away the clothes on her bed, Eliana hit her limit. She turned around, put her little hands on her hips, and said, “I can’t do everything!”

Do you ever feel that way with the tasks God has called you to do? It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with church involvement, witnessing, and raising a family. We might sigh in exasperation and pray, “Lord, I can’t do everything!”

Yet God’s instructions indicate that His expectations are not overwhelming. For instance, as we deal with others, He gives us this qualifier: “As much as depends on you, live peaceably with all” (Rom. 12:18). God understands our limitations. Or this: “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord” (Col. 3:23). He’s not asking for perfection that we might impress people, but simply to honor Him with the work we do. And one more: “Let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another” (Gal. 6:4). We are not doing our work as a competition with others, but simply to carry our own load.

In wisdom, God has equipped us to do just what He wants us to do—and that’s certainly not everything!

He gives me work that I may seek His rest,
He gives me strength to meet the hardest test;
And as I walk in providential grace,
I find that joy goes with me, at God’s pace.

Jesus’ Eyes

We were in line at the ice cream store when I noticed him. His face bore the marks of too many fights—a crooked nose and some scars. His clothes were rumpled, though clean. I stepped between him and my children, using my back to erect a wall.

The first time he spoke, I didn’t hear him clearly and so just nodded to acknowledge him. I scarcely made eye contact with him. Because my wife wasn’t with me, he thought I was a single parent and gently said, “It’s hard raising them alone, isn’t it?” Something in his tone made me turn to look at him. Only then did I notice his children, and I listened to him tell me how long his wife had been gone. His soft words contrasted with his hard exterior.

I was duly chastened! Once again I had failed to see beyond outward appearances. Jesus encountered people whose outward appearance could have turned Him away, including the demon-possessed man in our reading for today (Mark 5:1-20). Yet He saw the heart-needs and met them.

Jesus never fails to see us with love, even though we have scars of sin and a rumpled nature that shows in our stutter-step faithfulness. May God help us to replace our haughtiness with Jesus’ heart of love.

Father, may the focus of our lives never disrupt
our ability to see others with the same eyes that
Jesus sees them. Grant us Your heart.
May we yearn to introduce others to You.

Living Testament
March 13, 2013

Watchman Nee was arrested for his faith in Christ in 1952, and he spent the rest of his life in prison. He died in his jail cell on May 30, 1972. When his niece came to collect his few possessions, she was given a scrap of paper that a guard had found by his bed. On it was written his life’s testimony:

“Christ is the Son of God who died for the redemption of sinners and was resurrected after three days. This is the greatest truth in the universe. I die because of my belief in Christ—Watchman Nee.”

Tradition says that the apostle Paul also was martyred for his faith in Christ. In a letter written shortly before his death, Paul exhorted his readers: “Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble . . . ; but the Word of God is not chained” (2 Tim. 2:8-9).

We may not be called upon to be martyred as witnesses to the reality of Christ—as millions of His followers through the centuries have been—but we are all called to be a living testament of Jesus’ work on our behalf. No matter the outcome, from a heart of gratitude for God’s gracious gift we can tell others what Jesus has done for us.

The Christ of God to glorify,
His grace in us to magnify;
His Word of life to all make known—
Be this our work, and this alone.

Let your life as well as your lips speak for Christ.

Last week we were still waiting on a decision from the first dealer, rather or not they were going to Sponsor our comeback into the Modern Day Treasure Hunter Business. It didn't look so good as it had been a month since I had approached and I wasn't even getting called back. I figured my chances where like 20/80.
.
Then Tuesday Wendy and I while taking the city bus from strip mall to strip mall Soliciting No Soliciting Signs happened upon a Recording Studio. They loved the irony of us solicitin no solicting signs and bought two. Curioius to why we were doing this they asked and I told them my story. The rags to riches to rags story of my life or at least the last ten years.
.
They were very interested and offered their services to film my first event back as a "pilot" for a possible Reality TV Show. I was stoked of course. I went home and emailed the prospect for sponsoring the event and bam. Not one not two but three phone calls and an email! One from the Owners Secretary and they are in!!!
.
Just like that things have changed. We are still having to struggle for a month or two or until we can find a couple more sponsors but now we are blinded by this incredible life at the end of the tunnel. Looks like our American Dream is about to come through after a long struggle with the perseverance, hard work, luck and Grace of God to bring us back. Now we can make big plans for the future!!!
.
Soon we will be hiring the staff needed to grow this into the company I desire to have and will look to create over 500 jobs in the next 12 months!!! Happy Days are here again!!!

Refreshing Candor

Of the many things I love about my mom, chief among them may be her candor. Many times I have called to ask her opinion on a matter and she has consistently responded, “Don’t ask my opinion unless you want to hear it. I’m not going to try to figure out what you want to hear. I’ll tell you what I really think.”

In a world where words are carefully parsed, her straightforwardness is refreshing. It is also one of the characteristics of a true friend. Real friends speak the truth to us in love—even if it isn’t what we want to hear. As the proverb says, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend” (Prov. 27:6).

This is one of the reasons Jesus is the greatest of friends. When He encountered the woman at the well (John 4:7-26), He refused to be pulled into a tug-of-war over secondary issues but instead drove to the deepest issues and needs of her heart. He challenged her about the character of the Father and lovingly spoke to her of her broken dreams and deep disappointments.

As we walk with our Lord, may we allow Him to speak candidly to the true condition of our hearts through the Scriptures—that we might turn to Him and find His grace to help us in our times of need.

Father, thank You for sending Your Son to be my Savior
and the greatest of friends. Help me to learn from Him
how loving honesty can make a difference in helping
the hurting people around me.

I consolidated my messages, I hope you don't mind. They took up too much room. Be well, healthy and happy &... well :)! Take care of you, folks and me too, are praying for ya. Please consider not taking lightly. I have a couple family members that wound up hospitalized. One was my Granny, to as young as my brother & friends. That almost killed my Dad when he was only a few yrs younger than you, at that time. Not trying to scare ya, it's no big deal if taken care of and not let go, I just know guys hate Dr. visits and what have you. It's seems a good part of the men my age and older, not all but part get to live vicariously through you, but have the pleasure of going to their daily lives which are a bit slower. Ladies, well we just love ya period not matter our age. Just wondering when do you get to slow down, even just a little. I mean those gents are doing back flips and jumping to the sky. Great you can and do, just hope it's cause you enjoy it. The gals we just like to see ya smile. Then we go home to our slower lives, and you keep going another city, another day. Your Shows are awesome, always like a party, always making us all forget about our worries in times like these for those few hours, sometimes longer. I just wish you all the happiness in the world and know that you always gave and give way above and beyond what we pay for in a price of a ticket to the Show, AWLAYS!!! This is even on slower songs, b/c of the heart & soul that you put in each note, and it shows. Blue skies & white fluffy clouds are beautiful. Miss ur pic, but there when we sign off, it's cool. :))) I espec love seeing blue sky through rain clouds, reminds me even through the storms in life, God is always steady and always there, just like the blue sky. How you put into words exactly how I feel when looking at a blue sky with white fluffy clouds like here. I hadn't been able to articulate my feelings; thank you for doing so, kind lady. :) I absolutely love this new site! I like his new pictures :) And I giggle because now his website is so fast on my old school computer that I barely catch a glimpse of his oh he's so handsome Rebel Soul CD insert back picture photo. I'll make due, though, I gaze through the insert often. :) And I believed this was my happy place before? Life with Kid Rock keeps getting better and better and better and it already rocks!?!?! How does he do it? I, too, continue to pray for his health, happiness, and wellness. I don't know if he likes the flippin' anymore either (I don't like triathlons anymore but I'd like to think I'm still a bit spry LOL) In everything I know, everyone goes to his shows for his musical mastery, to be closer to him for whatever time he shares to refuel with loving family so everyone can go back out into the storms of life knowing God is always steady and always there because God sent Angel Robert James Forever Kid Rock Ritchie to share with them a soul-healing joyful journey. While Mr. Ritchie's flips are real nice, my favorite one's are his mic flips...those are really something for me ;) plus I see more of his smiles when he mic flips...and you're right, BJ, I love to see Kid Rock smile :) He smiles handsomely :)

Happy Sunday...hope u and ur band are taken care out there...if this Winter was a friend.. on facebook...it would get unfriended:)So done with it! My kids, and so many others are sick with bronchitis...respiratory infections etc...on meds...it's just kickin everyone in the pants,spreading and lingering on! Please take care of each other and stay well... Mr. Rocknroll...lol the hardest workin man in show business;) Like James Brown says...i feel gooood! :)

I started to mention another thing prior, but realized it wasn't something that you need be concerned w/. That person I found has lots of folks around, they'll be fine. I'm sorry I even thought to put here, although I chg'd my mind. You do so much for so many, I know you like to give back and don't stop... just remember, THE WORLD BELONGS IN GOD'S HANDS, NOT ON YOUR SHOULDERS.
