North West Autism
North West Autism builds accessible and comprehensive, community-based approaches to helping children and adults with autism. CARE funds will be used to purchase learning tools for autistic children enrolled in their Domino Project Preschool, for families, therapists and teachers needing consultation and training in autism treatment and intervention especially in rural areas, and for 3 free screening days held over a 9 month period. While North West Autism has touched countless lives, below are the stories of two children who have been impacted directly.
· Aidan was diagnosed at 2 years old. He attended a school untrained to educate autistic children and was not in class with kids his own age. He was treated as a child that no one wanted to deal with. After enrolling in the Domino Project, Aidan's progress has skyrocketed and he is beginning to talk and play with other kids.
· Derek was diagnosed with autism at 2 and a half years old. Before starting at the Domino Project Derek had a vocabulary of twenty words, he had night terrors where he woke up screaming, and meltdowns where he would be inconsolable for up to an hour. After 3 years with the Domino Project, he successfully transitioned to an elementary school and has made considerable progress Northwest Autism Center has put the family in touch with the right people, doctors, programs to give Derek and his family the best possible chance for a "normal" life.
