    Lyrics: Samples vs References
    jade says (20 Apr '11)

Its taking me a little longer to get back into the swing of things (and the lyrics website) after the cruise. cause frankly, I'd rather be on the Lido deck with a fucking pina colada.  but, ain't happening so...

I'm slowly starting to add writting credits to the lyrics pages.  at the same time I'm looking to add sample, reference and singing credits.  I'm starting on Devil without a Cause.

I really don't know where the samples came from in most of this music, so this is gonna take me a while.  but I thought I'd use the Wiki entry for KR discography as a starting point. but what they list as "samples" really seem to be only refereces to me. the majority of what they list are not pieces of other music lifted and dropped into KR music (this is how I think of a "sample") but KR has taken a line or phrase and sung it himself, or a riff of music from the other song and used it.  This seems to be more of a "reference".

Do any of you have any opinion or ideas about this?  Here is the list of Devil "samples" from Wiki:

Thanks Blue! I've kinda given up hope on getting any attention from Bob or any of his people or the band. The lyrics are still so wrong on this site, I just don't believe that they have missed it for this long so it must not be a priority for them.

in the mean time, I am still working on samples and references for Devil. There is actually a sample from The Fat Boys' "Stick 'Em" in Roving Gangster! lol
what other song does KR sing "brrrrrrr stick em"? that's from the Fat Boys, too! more of a reference, though. oh! its on Live Trucker's Somebody's Gotta Feel This. Its endless. :-) but its kinda fun doing this, it'll just take me a lot longer.

anyone know where "A Delicious Break From Potatoes" comes from? the sample I mean? Its gotta be some commercial. probably rice-a-roni or something like that ! lol if anyone thinks of it let me know!

Jade, hopefully, you can get thru to Bob and the band and get some exclusive comments links and video as it's a logical place to store the non-label historical stuff. Be nice if they'd talk about writing some of the early stuff today in retrospect.

Thanks Videoace, that's exactly the way I think of samples & references. glad to know that I'm not the only one, cause that's how I'm gonna use them on the website.

I know wiki can be wrong, but I was surprised at how wrong here! lol I just needed a place to start. I can research it all and try and figure it out as I go.

sampling/reference? here are some examples to better explain.

ton loc: wild thang (foriegners hot blooded) sampled
kid rock: all summer long (werewolves of london/sweet home alabama/freebird) referenced

wiki isnt always accurate. anybody can add or make their own facts there.

Also, in a further complication, I can't figure out why "Cowboy" is tied to these two songs:
"Midnight Rider" by The Allman Brothers Band
"L.A. Woman" by The Doors

Other than perhaps a very vague indirect reference, I can't see how they are directly connected at all.
