Just wanted to share this with all of you...
    LORI says (25 Feb '10)

I originally sent the following out to only the people on my friends list...after so many touching and postive e-mails and comments back, I decided to share this with everyone here on The KRC... for some of you this will be a re-read (if you care to) since you recieved it before. For everyone else please continue...

Hi Everyone... just wanted to share some things
    >with you... First of all...
    > Today I was at a gas station, The lady in front

    >years old. he wasn't very well kept, messy hair
    >and dirty clothes. He was asking her to buy him
    >something. She told him she didn't have any money
    >to buy anything. She then proceeded to buy
    >herself a pack of ciggarettes. He laid down the
    >candy bar he wanted and then bought a pack of
    >juicy fruit gum with the quarter he had pulled out
    >of his pocket. I bought what I needed and went
    >out side where they were getting into their
    >somewhat beat up truck. I handed the little boy a
    >dollar and told him to go back inside and buy
    >himself something better than a pack of gum. You
    >would of thought I handed him a million dollars by
    >the way his face lit up as he could barely get the
    >words "Thank you" out of his mouth..his mom said
    >thanks to me also but she did look a bit
    >embarassed. He ran back in the store to buy
    >himself whatever. I got in my car and you know I
    >felt like a million dollars myself. I'm not rich
    >by any means financially, but for that moment of
    >giving away a dollar, I know I'm rich in things
    >other than money... after all, holding onto that
    >dollar wasn't going to make me or break me. I may
    >not have hit the lottery, but i feel like a

Lori, first of all I love your site. In response to your story (as a mom and grandmother) it was so kind of you but I would have like to have been asked privately first. Something I do that is fun is when you are driving thru a fast food place, pay for the person behind you! Not only does it trip out the people working there but I think it's a nice surprise for the car behind (just make sure it's not full of teens). Makes for good karma as well plus I get a blast when I pull away and I can see the look on the persons face in my rear view window when the person at the window tells them it was paid for! I usually make a quick get-away so they can't follow. That's half the fun!

that was a great story, i was at the same concert that u were at the palace and they had the cameras and said it was gonna be on a dvd and everyone was so excited and then it never got released, what happened to that? i wish it would get released

Hey Lori- you don't need to explain ANYTHING about your story! Anybody who GETS IT-----GETS IT!!!! But I will have to say you did a fine job of s'plaining.......however, you are never going to be able to explain kindness, love of your fellow brother/sister, generosity, paying attention to people who matter- but who don't feel like they do, just somebody noticing that YOU are alive- and caring- even if they don't know you.............you'll NEVER be able to explain your heart to MISS BIG CHIEF BLACK CLOUD!!! In my humble opinion- you made that boy's day- maybe even his life. He will do that for somebody else someday and remember you. He walked a little taller- he actually felt like somebody noticed him. All that crap about whether you should- or whether you are undermining somebody's parental authority- what the crap is that doing on here. Does she not GET anything that The Kid writes his songs about? If your heart tells you to do it--DO IT- "IT MAKES IT REAL"!! You have 24/7 to EXERT your 'parental authority'- lighten up- I'd HATE to be her kid!!! This is a place for fun, happiness, brotherly and sisterly love and sharing our unlimited appreciation for The Kid's talent and soul and heart- NOT NEGATIVITY!! And to your story.....Sista........I SAY AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lori, everyone knows the difference between a kid just wanting candy and one that probably hasn't had any in a while. You should be commended for noticing the needs of a stranger...

Lori:
Your heart was in the right place and that is what is important here. If it made you and that little one feel good, I'm glad. Also...regarding the video. I was at that concert too and I actually got on film....I probably ended up on the cutting room floor, though, LOL! I heard they were filming, so I wore my "Got Melons?" t-shirt. (from our local melon festival) The camera guy was like two rows in front of me, so I leaned over and tapped him on the shoulder and said..."hey....you got melons?" He cracked up and filmed me and my friend.

Well, I wouldn't buy anyone a pack of ciggies... not helpng anyone to kill themselves

Melonie_2's picture

My approach is to ask the mom/dad if it is okay first. That way the child sees that Mom/Dad is also the boss of strangers. And when I buy the child what it wants and if at all possible I buy Mom/Dad another pack of ciggies. I will also try to open conversation with that person to hear their story and see if there is anything else I can do. Sometimes, time is the best thing you can give anyone. Grandma used to say "The last time Jesus walked the earth he did it as a beggar and who am I to turn away Jesus?" Peace Yall!

This story I passed on isn't about trying to overide parental authority... I too, have been faced with that raising my own sons. Someone trying to say "yes" or give in to them when I said "no". I wrote this trying to be tasteful in my wording..I suppose you just had to see the senerio in order to have a better idea ... so I'll detail more blunty
The mom standing there clenching a baggie full of change fiending for her next pack of smokes, barely waiting to get outside to light one up. A boy standing there eying the treats, dirty, not just from having fun on the playground that day, but 3 day old or longer dirt. His clothing hadn't seen a washer in some time and he probably hadn't seen a shower in a few days either. His hair not just messy but greasy and dirty, black dirt embedded under his fingernails, and holes in his tennis shoes. It was a woman putting her addiction to nicotine before her child at several levels. I would guess to say it wasn't about being too close to dinner time. It was approx. 2:30 in the afternoon and she could care less that he bought the pack of gum. She also didn't mind him going back in to spend his dollar. If it was originally in the 1st place a choice of hers to say no to him for healthy reasons thye would have continued on their way.
That is why I said be more aware of your surroundings and others. It isn't like I would go around shelling out a buck to every screaming, crying kid who is grasping for candy in the grocery store line. It's kinda like not offering food to a hungry person, because they might have eaten a meal earlier at the corner soup kitchen or handing out a blanket to a homeless person because they might have a bed that night at the local shelter.... hopefully this add-on puts what I posted in better perspective... Be aware and care more.... little and big things, alike... alot of "making the headlines" tragedies may not have ended up that way if someone would have been more aware of wha

As for the rest- DAVID SPADE is what you were looking for-will write an e-mail in support of a possible DVD-anything for you Lori-water from a garden hose best when shared with a friend hehe-RJ

Beautifully said Lori- I agree to disagree with Michalanne-I think she missed the full spectrum of the story-RJ

Nice story and I am torn about what to think, It was nice to think that the boy was needy and that one dollar made his day but also Moms have the final say on what should be done for their kids. We don't know what goes on in other peoples lives and that is the final thing. Let's try and become more involved in each others lives, friend or stranger, and see if we can make a difference. I guess communication is the key. Listen to Kid Rock, watch the interviews and you will see that is the message he is trying to pass.

I remember reading that, and that was a nice thing, regarding the dvd I have been asking on his site about it for awhile, so i guess time will tell.

I applaude what you did for the boy, but at the same time I woulda' killed ya! First, I dont say "no, we dont have the money" especially when I get gas and cigs at the same time too. I often say no to candy to my kids. "get some juice/peanuts/fruit/or even one of those lil cups of ice cream" and if someone handed my kid a dollar to get candy I would have been pissed. It undermines my authority and tells the kid if she doesn't, someone will. Sometimes I say NO period. no means no. My reasons would be.... too close to supper, they didnt bother with lunch, they were rotten that day. Thats happend to me at a meeting once. I told Tim no more cookies so he went and asked someone else and so on till this creepy guy gave it to him. WRONG. I snatched it back and tossed it in the trash. Reminded Tim about strangers and taking from them like that. Oh, and Dont judge too quickly, as kids get dirty and any kid that doesn't...thats something wrong.
Not trying to pick a fight, in that scenario I may be tempted to do the same, but sometimes moms say no for other reasons.
