I was sort of stunned by the NCAA hammer on Penn, but not too much. Even the NCAA cannot in any way shape or form ignore the rape of children and take 2 years to hand down the punishment. They did the right thing. If Penn did not accept this punishment, then it has been reported that they may have gotten even worse. Death Penalty for 4 years and all other sanctions. Had a lot of respect for JoPa but now, not so much, why would they ignore what they heard in 98, and again in 2001. This didn't have to do w/ point shaving, or accepting money from a booster, this had to do w/ the coverup of the rape of children to preserve a legacy or a record. Prayers to all the rape survivors, and I hope the acknowledgement of these horrid acts helps in some way to your healing.
Catholicism is a male based
Catholicism is a male based hierarchy of culture, privilege, and dogma. Always made me wonder why marriage and a family were frowned upon for priests....especially if that's the experience you mandate for your people. If you don't experience it, how can you truly "support" it? And what horrific abuse do you allow to be put in it's place?
The weekly confessional implies forgiveness in penance, but, think that is far misconstrued by many as OK to go again, just a few more prayers at the altar next week. And unfortunately, due to human nature, it's sanctity is violated by privacy violations within the church.
Not a fan of this system, obviously.
You knew I'd have to say
You knew I'd have to say something about this ;)
I'm sure God is pretty pissed at any religious that would abuse their position in such a non-sacred and f-d up way. That really is the worst...for someone you trust with your soul to take advantage of the innocent. I'm not sure what the Church's goal was in trying to cover up such crimes/sins..probably the same - misguided 'protection' of the institution. Life is full of examples of the battle between good vs. evil. There are many good people in the Church, and in life, so I can't condemn the whole because of the few evil ones. Do I wish the abuse never happened? Of course.
The confession issue is an interesting one. I've always had difficulty with it, b/c I was raised Lutheran, and we always went to The Big Man himself, not through a sacrament. Reconciliation (confession) is supposed to be a healing sacrament. Many ppl need to admit out loud what they have done wrong, and hear someone tell them they are forgiven. But if the same ppl do not learn from their mistakes and methodically repeat them, then obviously, their intent is not to do better. There are consequences to every action/sin. Evil actions will make their life here (and later, lol) more difficult.
Just my personal thoughts.
My Dad did coursework at Penn
My Dad did coursework at Penn State for some defense deal of the government's back in the late sixties, and we traveled out there to meet him and drive back. That university was one of the most esteemed in the nation, not just for their sports programs. All I can remember is being surrounded by brick and ivy.
In my opinion, in many places, the Roman Catholic church is guilty of the same breach of faith. Warning sign must flash in your head when prestige and a sense of absolutely rightness (weekly forgiveness sessions DO NOT help) take precedence over the innocence and rights of children.
I am very sad and
I am very sad and disappointed....I visited Penn State for a game against MSU, and the pride there was evident everywhere..when the focus becomes protecting the pride and the program over innocence, people, and goodness...what can you say? :(
I applaud them for accepting
I applaud them for accepting blame and making retributions. Another example, how in the quest of power and control, people lose their moral compass.
I agree with you. Some are
I agree with you. Some are upset with the punishment, but if that were my child that was molested...this punishment is not severe enough. The whole situation makes me so angry...put these children first for a change.
