Uncle Kracker - Flint, MI Machine Shop Oct 11, 2013
I just joined the Kid Rock site, I am curious as to where we can get more info on the chilhood of kid Rock? He seems understandably guarded, but with his popualarity yet enigmatic personna, just prompt his fans to want to know more about him. I have an eight year old Son who was diagnosed with ADHD, and was curious if the same DX was given to Kid Rock or if years ago M. Rock was labled a hell raiser ot trouble starter? i struggle to understand my sons thinking, because he is the one who has been hauled to the Principals office since the first grade, the one who sasses back to his Teacher, the one who flushes entire rolls of toilet paper down the schools toilet, hides in the lockers, the one who urinates outside etc... however, the handful that he is, he is so creative, intelligent and caring. just curious if Mr. Rock was a little S_ _ T growing up? Bonnie

Agree, agree, agree, MOMOF8!!! I thought the same thing about my daughter. The Speech person at the school told me my daughter might be ADD-inattention--I resisted it for 2 years. It couldn't be. I can fix it.
2 years lost. When we finally got things straightened out, the Speech person reminded me about our previous conversation. I told her I was not ready to hear it at the time...and sometimes that is true.
Also, I have seen many kids 'outgrow' the meds. Take it day by day. That is all any of us can do :)
@Michael I used to be very, very anti-medication when I adopted my first child. I thought surely I could teach him with my great wisdom and patience! God must have had a good chuckle over my inflated ego! I educated myself in all kinds of behavioral management techniques, not necessarily the rod, but discipline and boundaries to help shape him, which is what I hear you saying. What I found was that his brain was so disorganized that he could not internalize my well-taught, well-intentioned techniques. When we put him back on the meds, he was able to absorb more of life's lessons. He is, by the way, 21-years old now and medication free. Medication does not have to be a permanent thing!
Bonnie, I agree wholeheartedly with Val. My kids are all adopted from foster care and so we have a hodge-podge of diagnoses and several have ADHD in addition to the trauma-induced diagnoses. I've found that once you find the right medication and the kids can focus, that's when you have an avenue into their brains to start working on some of the behaviors. We've been able to get some awesome "skills" workers who come into the home and help teach the kids to monitor their own behaviors, work on impulse control, planning ahead, breaking homework down into manageable chunks--skills that they can learn once you slow them down enough to be able to learn! I don't know where you live, but here the workers have all been covered by health insurance with no out of pocket charges to me. And bless you all who work in the animal shelters! Like my kids, most of my pets are second-hand and my hat's off to all of you who nurse them back to health when they come in off the streets. We have had some of the most lovable dogs come to us through rescue agencies. They are very therapeutic for us because we can talk about the neglect and trauma the animal has suffered and how he/she is overcoming a difficult past when we are REALLY talking about the kids. It makes it less threatening for the kids so we tend to have lots and lots of animals around. Anyway, I digress. As far as your son goes, sometimes you just have to look past the behavior and look for the intentions of his heart. Somewhere I have a list with lots of famous people who have ADHD. The one that comes to mind first is Robin Williams. His mama must have pulled her hair out trying to raise him!
@ Michael: the definition of discipline is "to teach lovingly." There are ways of helping a child learn something positive without 'using a rod.' Some ADHD kids will act out because of frustration. That doesn't mean we can't find ways to help them cope besides corporal punishment. I agree, medication is only one piece of the puzzle.
Bonnie, it sounds like you are off to a good start. I have found that as kids mature, things get a little easier. Just remember, you know your son the best, so take what everyone else says with a grain of salt.
PS Yes the strays seem to find me (or St. Francis sends them to me, I haven't decided which yet:)) That is so great that you volunteer at the shelter. You can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat animals and children :) :)
Thanks for sharing your insight Val, I appreciate when people can share their views on such an important issue.Val, you must have much patience and understanding. Your profile said that you share your home with rescue critters? You are a gift from God to care for his creatures. I volunteer once a week at our local animal shelter, I am a surgical instrument tech at a hospital, so I help out in the surgery at the shelter. We spay and neuter, do minor procedures, biopsies, eye enucleations, amputations of the shelter animals. We have one Vet, and one vet tech, and they are the most caring, and hard working people i have seen, the staff is great, and everything is done to provide a loving permanant home for theses animals. I fostered a Shit Zu- Llhasa Apso mix, who was abandoned, horribly matted, blind, old, sickly, starving but he had such a great personality and so loving, that he needed that last hope, so with the shelters care he recovered and I was fortunate enough to bring him home and have never given him back : ) Again thanks for your valuable advice, My Son does take Adderall and recently started on Strattera and is showing more control, I wished it were a matter of discipline only, and wished I did'nt need to give him meds, but like you have said it is a neurological condition. Bonnie
Ignorance is bliss, unless you're unfortunate enough to be Michael's ADHD kid -- yikes!!
He needs discipline. Medication covers the problem, the rod fixes it.
Great advice Val
Hi Bonnie,
I can't speak for KR's childhood, but I have worked with kids with special needs, including ADHD. Is your son on any medication currently? It could help him focus in school. A child who has ADHD suffers from inattention; subsequently, his/her brain works 5 times harder than a normal child's brain (think of a ball bouncing back and forth all over the place.) It's a neurological condition, unfortunately which results sometimes in negative bahavior. Many ppl do not understand or know that; they just see the undesireable behavior.
Please make sure your son knows that your home is a safe place, and that he can always count on you. Everyone else is likely giving him negative feedback. You have to be his advocate both in school and out. He may need the school to draw up an IEP, which is an individualized education plan that will give your son special considerations in the classroom (altho you haven't mentioned grades are an issue; they can be, so if so, this would help.)
I don't have research-based fact on this, but have noticed that many creative ppl have suffered from this condition (including my daughter.) Luckily, their creativity can produce a much-needed outlet for what they are going thru. Encourage your son to take classes or somehow express his creative side.
Good luck!
Theres tons of info out there about KR's childhood.
