    copyrights and music and YouTube
    jade says (23 Feb '12)

I'm spinning this off from another thread, curious to hear other feedback especially from anyone in the music world.  I'm fairly clear on how visual artist treat copyrights and their intellectual property but musicians and the world of mixtapes and YouTube and such seem a little different.

I've been thinking about the copyright issues surrounding the demo and alternate tracks I've been posting on YouTube through my lyrics website. I've always thought that stuff that was commercially available should be bought (because musicians and artists should be paid for their creativity) but that music that was not commercially available could be shared on YouTube because it spreads the word of the musician and leads to more fans and then more sales. I've asked as many musicians as I know (not a ton) and that's what seems to be the majority opinion.

but these demos & alternate tracks? while not commercially available exactly they're pretty close to those that are on the album.  YouTube has already flagged a lot of them as a copyright issue so they may get pulled soon.  I've been going ahead with this project with the idea that if I was overstepping my bounds someone would get word to me to knock it off. Hopefully that's true. but I'm starting to find more and more rare tracks like these.  Seems silly to post the lyrics without the song because so few people have heard these versions.  so... I dunno. I started thinking about this when I started posting the Bootleg tape versions.  so... any thoughts?

ha! I wish I had 6 or 7 bikes! lol as it is, when I get bored with mine (not often) I have to content myself with switching with my husband. he has a total badass customized Dyna~its totally beautiful and terribly unique. It also feels like riding a 2 x 4, so I generally stay on my own Dyna. lol!

anyway, I only post lyrics stuff here for those that find it interesting, like I do. I love talking about music beyond "I like it" and all the groupie stuff. I'm not at all worried about stifling creative expression! as long as there has been artists (since cavemen have been drawing pictures in caves) there have been people talking about the art. As far as I am concerned, art (including music & poetry), art critique, discussion about art and all things creative make the world go 'round.

as far as I understand it, this website is run more by the record company than Bob's people. but I really have no idea. copyrights are the business aspect of the art world and I only wanted to throw it out there so that I wasn't stepping on anyone's toes. but its out there now and I'm just gonna keep on keep on with talking about, and enjoying, the music and leave this conversation alone.

cheers~

Jade you do more to promote KRTBT than anyone I know. You care about the music and the integrity of the lyrics and you work very hard to improve our knowledge. Whoever insinuating you were bootlegging needs to be kicked in the teeth. Ill volunteer...

Hi Jade :) I know you're doing all this so you can buy another Harley right???? What, 6 are'nt enough!, Oh yeah, gotta have that 7th, so there's one for every day of the week! You KNOW I'M KIDDING ~RIGHT!!!!! Take no notice to the haters...Personally, I like your 'passion' in all this! What i realize though, is, I believe, most artists don't get involved on this level because it stymies Creative expression... hence/'Handlers' (BET'R CLARIFY HERE, I'M NOT ONE!!!)...Also, lyrics oftentimes, are deliberately left incorrect so their copy-writes are Not infringed upon. (covers and such) imho.. Jade, I enjoy your work, and really hope you continue...however, food for thought ...please don't focus too hard on lyric postings, as the artists/mgmnt co.s frequently protect their 'interests' by allowing for discrepancies....(like I said, imho:) and i also agree with you, Bob and Crew do take note and check what needs to be addressed :) God Bless, Jade It's Nice to see you!!! Your work brings many Smiles :)))) Thank You ~D

hiya Beckxy!! "pound salt" is an old Brooklyn saying, sometimes I've used it in when I go other places and people look at me funny... glad Gene would know what I'm saying. :-)

we have tickets for St Patty's day to go see Cecelia Celeste here in the city, at Webster Hall. Its gonna be awesome, CC puts on a fabulous live show. but unfortunately that means we won't see you guys. I know Lori and a number of other folks are going to that Jersey show with you guys, you all will have fun. we'll have to figure something else out for us. :)

good for you for getting shit done! as for pictures go, do you use Shutterfly? you can make a photobook online and then have that sent to you. I find it way easier than organizing the individual photos. that way its all put together and looks nice. I just had our 2011 book made, I love them.

and back to copyright stuff~ I have had people crawling out of the woodwork asking me to buy stuff and to SELL stuff lately. I don't buy or sell bootlegged stuff people, so whoever saw this and thought it somehow meant that I was selling bootleg copies is WRONG! someone told me they saw somewhere that I had sold CDs to 30 people. that is absolutely not true. I have not made a dime off of other people's music and creativity. I do buy rare albums and CDs on eBay & amazon occasionally and I am paying for the website's domain & hosting all myself so I'm putting out a lot of money for this project, not making money. so whoever is running around saying I'm selling bootlegs please fuck off. I hate fucking liars!

Hey girl.. haha.. Gene always says "pound sand"
We love to see you again soon.. not sure if you guys can do it.. but most of the group that was at Lisa's for Hershey are gonna be going to the Kracker/Stone show in Jersey on St. Patty's Day, minus a few but if you can swing it.. love to see you. : ) It's a small venue.. steakhouse/saloon. Tix on the Kracker site are no longer available.. but Gene's brother and girlfriend got them by calling the venue directly.

Yea.. the friends that were nice enough to send a few rare copied things to me are long gone from these parts.. still cherished friends.. but makes me think of that Paradime song.. "I rarely see you no more" But the ones which were only like 2 or 3 that I know of... were just kind-hearted.. or had just gotten to know thru trips to the D and share fun times. I don't even know what I have to be honest.. I would imagine a lot less then what you have been sharing..lol. I just don't get the time to go thru all my stuff.. shit, I still have last year's cruise pics that I haven't even gone thru yet, and still have to make a video and picture album of my niece's wedding from May of 2011. Life's just been crazy. I'm trying to earn a degree, be a coupon diva..lol, been going to the gym 5 days a week for well needed exercise, and working on a split shift part time... slowing my roll 'round here. I think my next thing on my agenda is to go thru all the things in my closets.. and organize. Kinda crazy what goes untouched for years doing the 9-5 every day... haven't said it yet.. but I'm at the point where I can smile and let go of the bitterness that they laid me off back in July ; )

Anyway.. going totally away from this topic now..lol But I think it's good what you are doing.. lotta history to learn about the dude ; )

Hey Beckxy!! thanks for the feedback, girl, and its always good to hear some of the history of this group, too. :) Hope to get to see you this summer!

I know a lot of people who are sitting on a ton of rare stuff. its cool if they only want to keep it to themselves but its the people who all the sudden crawling out of the woodwork to sell it to me that is curious. and those that just taunt me with it can go pound salt (yup, there are a couple of those!)

Hi Jade, How ya doing, neighbor : )

I agree with you that if you are not getting any heat from Kid Rock's camp that you should be okay. And, you provide a non for profit website based on Kid Rock's lyrics to show your love and support for the man and band, so being that you put yourself out there like that - it's not like they don't know where to get a hold of you if they weren't okay with it.

Back in 03/04, when all his fans would congregate on his old site at KRAA, alot of the fans were making friends with each other, meeting up at shows, partying pre n post the show, and some whom were very interested into collecting his unreleased music such as his demos, hard-to-finds, and concert footage were kind enough to share it with those friends that they had made thru the site. No money had ever been exchanged.. as it was a friendly act of kindness to share their love of this band with fellow friends/fans whom they thought were just as impressed with the band as they were. It's not too much of a difference with the exception that it was put on a cd and mailed out, tho I do know of a friend who had gotten many articles flagged on youtube back then, as well, for putting rare stuff up based on the copyright of the material.

I guess it really comes down to this: it's not you they have to really worry about.. but it's the ass out there who will think they can take the stuff, and try and make a profit off of it.

I've never heard anything from this website, but the lyrics are still wrong on this site so I'm not expecting much! lol but, this is more about my own internal dialog and doing what's "right". I'd hate to be doing anything that would be perceived as harming one of my favorite musicians.

Also, I have had a couple of videos completely blocked on YouTube, and then many with just the copyright issue notice. I do know a couple of people who got their accounts shut down after repeated copyright violations. In those cases, its probably some YouTube issue where after so many copyright flags it'll trip a something and the account gets flagged. I doubt any one person is sitting and looking at any of this very carefully. Honestly, that's why I posted about this here... I thought if anyone from KRs camp was paying attention it'd be here, and they could get a message to me if they think I should adjust what I'm doing. Otherwise, I'll just keep doing what I'm doing. :)

I checked my YouTube videos & I have 2 out of 6 videos that have copyright notices on them. I have no idea why some would meet the criteria & others wouldn't...seem strange. The 1 video that's got a copyright notice has been up for almost a year like that.
Has YouTube removed some of your videos or just notices? If there was a copyright issue it seems like you would've heard something from this website because of all the video links you post??

Margo C's picture

Thinking the same thing as Just Because...that sucks you're getting flagged on YouTube. Does the KR website got a problem with you posting these demos & alternate tracks on here or just YouTube?

I don't know anything about this but I hope you are able to continue. I've really enjoyed hearing these. It's fun and kinda cool. Keep us posted, Jade and thanks for your work!
