Video: Kid Rock Talks 'Born Free'

    June 21, 2010 7:05 EDT

Zac Brown Albums in this Article "Very organic" is how Kid Rock described his upcoming album, "Born Free," when he sat down for a video chat last week at Billboard's Music and Advertising conference in New York.

Tentatively due out Sept. 7, and produced by the always iconoclastic Rick Rubin, "Born Free" may be a rock and roll record, but it's also a showcase for Kid Rock's many many music-making friends. The album's 14 prospective songs, Rock explains, feature everything from a collaboration with Zac Brown to a track featuring Bob Seger playing piano with Sheryl Crow singing to a "rocky blues shuffle" called "Sounds Good To Me" featuring vocals from Trace Adkins. Elsewhere, Rock enlists both rapper T.I. and Martina McBride on the same song. "It just made sense," he says, a sentiment that McBride echoed on camera a couple weeks ago when we caught up with her in Nashville.

Kid Rock will hit a few stages this summer, but he's holding the real tour for sometime after the album's release this fall.

Beckxy's 'urban dictionary' somewhat hit the nail on the head with my thoughts of defining "organic"...which describes much of the 'Folk Rock' music of the Woodstock era I was thinking of when I think about & define "organic". Nature Boy's theory fits right in too, lol. Also, when I heard Kid perform 'Born Free' on the cruise...IMO it has a 'Folk Rock' or Woodstockish Folk feel, so very likely my idea of "organic" and Kid's is similar...in that the music is all 'natural'...'wholesome, Red, White, & Blue'...so to speak. As well, as Kid said, artists in the studio collaborating together with the songwriting aspects...I'm getting a visual of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, lol. :)

Ok I found it... Heres what he said about ORGANIC..
Kid Rock described the new album as "very organic" when he sat down for a video chat last week at Billboard's Music and Advertising conference in New York. "It's a Rock & Roll record. Very organic the way it was cut. What a concept - musicians in the studio playing and singing at the same time," he joked. "We really focused on the songwriting leading into it. I feel it's the best songs we've ever written in my career."

Im no expert on this stuff but it seems like some Groups/bands record new songs by actually playing the instruments just like you would hear it live. I remember Stef saying one time how hard it is to recreate what you hear on the album when they used drum machine for recording. So I have always assumed most of what we hear on the album isnt our band. But a conglomeration of machine and different artists. Then Our band rehearses till they have it down for concerts.

I have read in articles that other musicians were used for this album so I'm not sure where this all comes in to play but if I had a great band like TBT, I would use them to record. Maybe I'm just naive or have it all wrong but it seems strange to me.

I'm probably way off, but I took organic a little differently. I was thought he was talking about the way the music was created & developed. I don't know much about the music industry, but in other art forms, sometimes art is created in a very mechanical way... you set out to make a specific thing, you follow a formula, you go by someone else's rules, you hammer someone else's idea into your framework or vice versa. I thought he was saying this is what he DIDN'T do with writing this album... that he allowed the music to come in an organic way, by hanging out with the people and getting to know them and slowly developing the music as an integration into their relationship & their ideas. Along those lines, like Angel said, they ended up all playing & singing in the studio together--which is more organic than recording all the different parts separately which is more mechanical.

LOL Will, maybe he should of been more "organic" during the interview. Down to Earth ;)

Definition of Organic Music in the Urban Dictionary : Music that deals with natural, percussion, acoustic based instruments. Musicians involved in organic music resonate positive vibes in their music

2. I love that organic music it feels so natural.
3. Organic music is not computerized like electronica.
4. Organic music is good for the soul.
5.Organic music is roots music

~Interesting..lol

Did a great job in the interview. Question. Is he drunk?

Miss Missy's picture

Ha Ha he stole my words.....Cluster Fuck. jk LOL

He seemed very un-easy on the interview, maybe cause it was a dude interviewing him. IDK lol

My take on "organic" would be like the chemistry was there. Music, recordings artists, That's just my thought. Wish it didn't end so abruptly.

natureboy's picture

maybe he means organic as in they all were high while recording lol.

kidrockangel's picture

I dont have a clue why he used to word organic but I think he means they played and sang to record rather than recorded it all separate. Im not sure now where I even read that now

Connie Jo_3's picture

I'm not sure how to comprehend his using "organic" with defining the new CD. His definition and mine may be different. When I think of "organic" related to music...I think of 'folkish'...Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Carly Simon, Carole King...that era of music and artists of which I have always called and labeled 'Folk Rock'.
