I got one fer ya-- I woke up from a dream a Devil without a cause had a dream of a black chick ,white guy in the background i heard the Party Ode.Today im feeling like a Gangster from the Oldschool.
Well, The 4th has come and the 4th has gone.. Such a great time to be an American.. As I sat on the porch with Brew at my side. No, Not Beer, but the Trusty Pitbull, I came to a realization. Poor People are poor because they are fucking stupid...
I was house sitting for a friend this weekend in a lower class city then I normally reside. I BBQ'd in the yard, Porterhouse Steaks, Baked Potatoes, Hamburgers and Hotdogs.. The Neighbor commented on how good the food smelled, and so being the kind hearted man I am, I offered him a plate.. He came over and grabbed a steak and a Burger.. He started to tell me that his wife wanted to BBQ, but he spent all the money on fireworks during a trip to Indiana.. The conversation did not mean much to me at the time, but later that night, it sure did..
You see, the skies of Redford, Mi were fillwed with fireworks, and even more then that my eardrums were filled with a constant BOOM...All over this lower class town there were people shooting off illegal fireworks and it truly made me wonder, How many these people spent their Food allowance, Mortgage, Bill payments, etc on fireworks... I bet the number of late bills and starving families in Redford, Taylor, Detroit, and other low class cities skyrockets during this time of year...
If you are poor, here are some important life lessons.. 1) Quit spending your money on stupid shit.. There are plenty of GREAT fireworks displays put on by local cities and whatnot that are free, and far superior to your stupid displays..
2) Do not sacrifice your families need to eat, for buying utterly stupid material...
3) Pay your bills on time. This establishes credit, which allows you toget credit cards. These credit cards will afford you things that previously you had to wait till payday to get..
All Summer long has become an Anthem here in Michigan.. Bob looks like a genius again..

FUCK!
You guys suck!
{takes marbles and goes home)
hahahahahaha- oops, too late!
I think the Coach would agree with me...
You see, I did not say all people are poor because they are stupid. Most people are poor because they ae stupid. Most people who are poor live beyond their means.. Most people who are poor blame government, blame the rich, blame anyone they can, instead of clamping down and doing something about it...
Fucking Republicans? You better pray a Republican wins the presidential election, or you can count on this country going right into the shitter...
{sighs} fuckin' republicans..........
Out of curiosity, what do you s'pose "Coach" would say about your conclusion that poor people are poor because they're stupid?
Yes..."Coach" is special aint he..
One student wrote a blog (Coach didnt know..another student told him to look)
This kid had rotten parents....never showed up for anything
On his blog it said his parents may have raised him but Coach taught him to be a man.
And, I agree, working those schools has to be draining..but you have to hang on and just look for the students that really want to strive..
Hell Angel, the schools lose money if a kid drops out, so they make sure all these fucking losers show up for the official COUNT day by offering them ipods and shit..
Brenda is right, and the funny thing is, we both know a Teacher.. Someone who challenges his students, loves his students, and takes prode in helping them succeed. We know and love a one of a kind man that gives so much of himself for the benefit of his students.. There are many like him, but I am sure teaching in Detroit takes that love and will from you after a while.. 25% graduation rate has nothing to do with Teaching and supplies...
It takes a special person to teach in the city.
Some, not all, but some do it for the summer off..but some do it for the challenge and the reward of helping a child succeed
Its inspiring to hear of a child that beat the odds and is a successful, contributing member of society but unfortunately those stories are few and far between. most have the mind set of "getting whats owed" thats why they just love that Mayor. But thats a whole nother can of shit
1) If the kids in the neighorhoods that Kozol visited did not act like animals, and treat their teachers like shit, I truly believe they would have better teachers in their schools. Unfortunately these kids have no structure and no respect for their elders.. You can blame the parents, I do.. I think it is only fair to blame the parents, ut at the same time we should punish the parents too..
Listen, this god damn sterotype doesnt work, because there are many kids who do prosper from these areas, and that just proves to me that it can be done...
Agreed
Teachers in Detroit also get "Hazard Pay" These children are afforded alot, yet they refuse to participate.
The kids are punks...and for most the only time a parent shows up for anything is to yell at the teacher for flunking their punk ass kids.
Re-Lock up Nathaniel!
I'll second that!!
Mmmm... Does this mean because I agree with Kevrock, that I am now hanging from his balls???
LMAO
I could read Kozol's books, but his OPINION really does not matter much to me.
You see, for far too long we have been forced to believe that Kids from the inner city do not prosper because of the fact they are not educated at the level of a child from the Suburs. I am here to scream right back at those people and yell BULLSHIT..

Listen, this god damn sterotype doesnt work, because there are many kids who do prosper from these areas, and that just proves to me that it can be done...We have taken it a step furhter in Michigan, Not only was it bad enough that a good percentage of our Tax money was being stolen and forced into the Detroit Public Schools, but now we have this GARBAGE ASS SCHOOL OF CHOICE CRAP... Anything the liberals can do to assure these people get their so called FAIR CHANCE....
I genuinely do not care anymore.. I do not care what Liberal's think, how they think, or what they feel can fix it.. They should realize y kids like Nathaniel Abraham, and no matter what you give them, they just will go back to being thugs...
Fuck em
I can see I will get nowhere here...as a long time teacher, I have a lot of experience and firsthand knowledge of the how and why children fail. Some children lack support at home, others do not fit into a traditional school model, some have learning disabilities, some are just plain lazy....
I did not change my position- I believe there are lots of reasons that children do not end up with an education, whether it be in the city or in the suburbs; I am not "blaming" any one person or any one thing in particular- just pointing out places where I believe the biggest deficiencies wind up costing the students their best shot at a promising future.
I believe in taking personal responsibility, yes. At the end of the day, if my child has not learned what they should it is nobody's fault but my own (not the teachers', not the school's). I agree that at a certain age, children should be able to understand the value of an education if they have been taught to do so.
I'd like to suggest looking at Jonathan Kozol's books Savage Inequalities: Children In America's Schools and The Shame of the Nation: Restoration of Apartheid Schooling In America for case studies on the inequalities in American schooling past and present.
If genuinely caring to look at the reasons kids fail and trying to resolve those problems rather than throw away a whole segment of our society by chalking it up to stupidity makes me a sympathetic liberal, so be it.
Kev.. I agree with you 100%. I grew up in Detroit. I moved to the suburbs when I was old enough to make decisions for myself. Most of the people that I grew up with are still there. Most of them sit around blaming everyone else for how their life is. When are people going to step up and take responsibility for who they become in life?
What is sad is that you are going to be pointed at as the bad guy because you have spoken the truth.... And we all know how the truth hurts. Not saying that you care about that, but nothing ever seems to sink into some of these peeps.
I do believe that parents are responsible for teaching their children self-respect and self disipline but it's the child's responsibilty to use what they learn and make their life choices.
In some states, I believe MI is one of them. Drug addicts/achoholics are considered diabled and I happen to know of one case that the man can actually collects his check AND is provided money to pay someone to do his household chores...laundry and shopping, ect. Instead, he has a friend fill out and sign the form as if that friend was doing these chores for him and he collects the check.
You are not being idealistic, you are being a sympathtic liberal..
See, you went from blaming the schools, to blaming the parents...
I have been to almost every Detroit High School, as I have a close friend who is a probation officer. I disagree with you 100% when you say the Money does not trickle down to the students.. Almost every DPS has more computers then the schools in the Suburbs.. The schools are not the problem, its the mentality of the students..
Now, you go ahead and make excuses for them, but any child that does not understand the importance of an Education seems to be living under a rock...
Blame the schools, blame the parents, next you will blame the people in the Suburbs for not caring enough.. Maybe we should all give MORE money to the Kids in Detroit and surrounding Poor Economical areas...
The Mentality of these Kids is the real problem.. You Blame Role Models, you blame parents, you blame the schools, why not just blame them... Every Kid knows the value of an education, and if these schools are so poor, then getting good grades should be easy for a kid, and that should catapult them right into College...
Its sad that going to college is not their main goal, making money illegitimate is more of a goal, selling drugs is more of a goal...
Yes, I tend to be very idealistic in my views on what should be for the children of this country- you and I clearly have very different political views. Yes, there is a lot of money allotted for schooling in Detroit...but I do not believe it trickles down to the children. There is far too much corruption to ensure the $$$ gets to where it is most useful and needed. It is a sad fact in this country that people in the business of education get paid more the further removed they are from the actual children being served.
Even if I were to agree that Detroit kids have "every opportunity to succeed" because the schools they attend are adequate (which I cannot agree to as I have been in a few schools)... the absence of the support of parents is still a huge issue...you cannot allow a child to choose whether he/she will succeed at school.... many of these kids go home to empty houses or to parents that cannot read/help with homework or who do not value education themselves. Children cannot be expected to know what's best for them especially if they have no REAL role models (bball players are hardly ideal). I, for one, HATED school- had my mother not told me she would KILL me (and I believed her), I would have dropped out...as an adult with many degrees now, I know that would've been a huge mistake- but at the time I couldn't see that.
I'm afraid the only place I might be able to meet you on this subject is that failure to succeed in school is based on the PARENT'S choice not to ensure the success of the next generation....
AH my favorite thing, social services and the welfare system.
Now when I worked housing and that was lower income I always felt sorry for some of the working families, trying to make ends meet and taking care of their children that I was inclined to believe that all they needed was a break someone that cared enough about them where it made a difference and gave them that extra push to do better in their lives and make something for themselves. For some it did, they got that little help they needed and got off the assistance.
Welfare and Food Stamps are a whole different animal. Shady is right, they are given the option of a free education or great funding for it, not only high school but degrees and licenses for CDLs and nursing. Very few take advantage of it. They do find it easier to live off the system for allot of times the system helps them supplement their drug money income or whatever illegal doings they have. You don't know how many times you overheard them saying why should I work when I make 10 times that selling drugs? In housing you get caught doing that or any felony charge involving drugs or sexual acts boom your assistance is gone. Welfare? Hell lets give them more so they can live easier.
Parents as soon as their children hit the age of 21 bringing their kids down to apply for all they can get which just continues the circle. Young girls that don't want to work? no prob just pop out a few babies and there ya go, food and medical all around gang.
People crying they have no food or are going to be evicted while they pop out their camera phone with the 400.00 plan so they can call their boyfriend that just got done beating the hell out of them.
Sad sad sad
Working social Services really opened my eyes to what is wrong with they system, and believe me these people aren't that dumb they are smart enough to figure the system out and work it good. If they put that much effort into education and finding a job they could get off the
I am still shocked by Detroit's graduation rate...wasn't it like 25%? Now I can only imagine what it would be like to walk through a dangerous neighborhood to attend a delapidated school that is not properly equipped to actually TEACH children
That 25% managed to overcome, if that number is even accurate. The other 75% made excuses.
You are right, not all of Redford is low class... Its a lower income community.. There are some real nice parts, and real nice people in Redford
I have to step on here...
Since you want to speak about Detroit, I will speak about Detroit..
Detroit Public Schools are more funded, Detroit Public School teachers are paid well, and The Children of Detroit, Rich or Poor are afforded every opportunity to succeed.. They make a conscious decision to either learn, or be stupid...
I think your liberal mindset is a little prehistoric... A lot of these children are given everything they need to succeed, they just choose a different path. Detroit public Schools offer more programs then many schools in the Suburbs..
Their failure is based more on Choice, then anything else...
How did they afford a trip to Indiana? Wait, didn't someone post that welfare now gives a $400. gas card a month? WTF is that!!! And Redford = low income, Not always low class. But I agree with your general point! I thought my windows were gonna shatter with the shit going off around my house all week.
Amen, ShadyLynn! I am still shocked by Detroit's graduation rate...wasn't it like 25%? Now I can only imagine what it would be like to walk through a dangerous neighborhood to attend a delapidated school that is not properly equipped to actually TEACH children (who then return home to their illiterate parents). One of the biggest injustices in our country is that the playing field in regards to schooling is not even. Why shouldn't ALL children have access to the same opportunities in school? It's not their fault they were born to poor parents in a poor neighborhood- school is the ultimate opportunity to escape the viscious cycle of poverty. Nothing screams "you are not a valued part of society" to children like failing to provide them a quality education (safe, clean, well-supplied).
But our welfare system has also bred generations of people to believe that should you not be so inclined to be a productive part of society that it is okay to sit back, make babies, and collect $$$ and food stamps. When do we force these people back into the fold?
I have never been poor. My parents provided for me. I spoil my own children. So I don't consider myself a fair judge of whether it is simply stupidity that can account for why poor people are poor. Here is what I do know though: I watched my very wealthy uncle go broke paying for chemo and radiation when he got lymphoma and had no health insurance, and another uncle I am currently helping to keep out of foreclosure because of the poor economy here in MI and again, being on kidney dialysis with no health care...and my uncles are very smart, well-educated men who had their own successful businesses.
Poor People are poor because they are fucking stupid...
In most cases, they didn't take advantage of earning a free HS education either, far superior situation then qualifying for a food allowance.
