    Am I Great?
James Robert Duke says (21 Nov '12)

A long time ago Wendy’s Uncle Jeff called me from a hotel in KY. He and his new girlfriend and kids were stuck about to be on the streets with no money. I wired him $150. Am I Great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
On that same trip I pulled into New Orleans coming from the Biloxi. I got off the freeway and pulled under the overpass to see a mile of homeless in tents a full year after Katrina took their homes. I pulled to the side of the road, pulled out all the food and drink I had for myself and gave it to the homeless. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
The night before my sister died at 42 I was called and asked to bail her out of jail. I got up at 3am and drove 30 miles to Glenwood and bailed her out with my last $300. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
After Mary died then Jim T died I took her six year old daughter in as my own. Only to lose her for six years to her biological Father. We have her back now and we are doing our best to give her a future. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
Mary’s son Joel needed help coping with his loss and came to me many times in need. Among many other times I bought him a $3500 car and gave him $3500 once for an attorney to stay out of jail. I have flown him numerous times first class and tried to give him a good life. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
I was made aware of a total stranger a few years ago who was about to lose her home. She needed $800. I never met this person or talk to them. I was given their bank account number and I deposited the money she needed. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When my sisters other kid by marriage wanted to go to school I gave her the money plus extra for food and living expense. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When my father passed I met my cuz Ed Cznarnick. Fresh out of prison I took him out and partied his ass of in Shreveport. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When I opened my business and I started hiring people I ran ads for help wanted. Many came for an interview and all needed jobs. I hired EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When Chris Christiansons brother in law needed $8,000 to save his condo I gave him the money. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
Every time we would go out to eat we would invite everyone and I would always buy. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When there is food left over I get it to go and take the time to search out homeless who are hungry and I feed them. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When I met Cleveland Eugene in an ER waiting room in San Diego just trying to stay out of the weather. I listened to his tale and gave him food, company and $200 cash for his meds. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
I adopted Cleveland Eugene a fully grown black man and moved him to Phoenix where I could help him. Gave him money to go home to see his family he hadn’t seen for years. Housed him fed him and gave him his dignity back. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When in Vegas once I met a man who was down on his luck. Not from gambling or other addictions just beat up by life. I rented him a room, put up the deposit money and gave him $100 bill. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
Once at The Golden Nugget a man in a wheelchair approached me and told me that the $300 in the machine would keep get water and power back on. I hit three bars for another $100 printed the ticket and handed it to him and said go get your power on and buy some food. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
Out partying with Rod and ED looking for weed I saw an older lady with open wounds on her legs from diabetes that was untreated. I told the guys to hold up and walked the opposite way towards her. I peeled $200 off the top and gave it to her. I will never forget the look on her face as she said “God Bless You”. I replied he already did how do you do you think I was able to do what I just did. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
I saw that same lady on another trip this time I was at a stop light in the back of a limo. She was hunkered down in a stairway with her six bags of luggage. I jumped out, held up traffic and flipped another $200 her way. All most pulled the limo driver behind us out of his car and beat his ass for honking because he was being delayed. Even after he saw me help that lady. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
On my Birthday two years ago with my wife out RUNNING around on me she called to ask if she could loan her sister $1,000. I said yes. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
For the fourth of July I rented a big mansion in San Diego for $5,000, Chartered a $10,000 Fishing boat for everyone, paid for huge meals and bought all the party supplies and everyone was invited. Easy $20,000 laying it out for family and friends. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
I took everyone to see Kid Rock as often as I could. VIP, First class Airfare, Party, Food, Front Row tickets, Fancy hotel rooms. If it’s was Kid Rock Related, I threw a huge party.
My average payroll for two weeks for my employees was $200,000. I created those great jobs and supported the efforts for over five years. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
For the Holidays we invited and put on a feast for all. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When I approach someone who I think is less fortunate to give them food I always do it this way. “Hey can I ask a favor of you. If you see someone come by here that looks hungry can you give them this?” Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
Even when I’m broke and I can’t help myself, I pack up our leftovers and search out a homeless person who is hungry and better yet teach my kids to do the same and feed many people even in my hour of need. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When I sold cars and was a hot shot making big bucks I gave $500 a paycheck to Catholic Charities to help with the basic needs and welfare of the less fortunate. I did this for years. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When I give in Church and everyone is looking I wrap a $100 bill inside some ones. Am I great? No I a fall well short of my calling.
    .
When my sister’s other kid needed money for a home for her and her kids. I gave her $3,000 and told her that I would not abandon her. That I know she will need help for some time. I would go and deposit money for months to ensure she was OK. Until she disappeared and got back on drugs to cover the pain of her life. She has not spoken to me since my Mother passed in March. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
I gave $5,000 down on a house for my cuz and his family, then another $13,000 for remodeling and another $13,000 for furniture and another $10,000 on a new Truck. I moved them from intercity Anaheim to Peoria and employed and supported them for five years. He worked for some, she grew fat and lazy after quieting her job and sitting on the couch for five years. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
We filled the refrigerators and cupboards for family and friends in need. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
When I had nothing to give I gave of myself, reached out and started a conversation with someone I could see was in need. Not of a hand out or of bread to eat. Just someone would talk to them and treat them with respect any human needs. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.
    .
All of this indeed I did do. I’m sure there are other things I can’t remember I wrote this list in two minutes as I ran fast through my memories. Am I great? No I fall well short of my calling.

I will always take the time to listen.
I get a great thrill when I see them glisten.
All their troubles I hope to erase.
As the wrinkles disappear from their face.
A minute here and a minute there.
I don’t pay attention how long is thier hair.
Do they drink or do drugs I don’t get involved.
All of their problems for a moment are solved.
The things I have done and things that I do I’m afraid are not for you.
Everything I do I do for a reason.
It is for MY joy that I give no matter what the season.
I get a great high as the passer by catches me as I smile.
Knowing all the while it is I who was so lucky to greet him.
Am I great? You bet your ass I am!

It is not my goal to brag or boast. Am I Great? NO I FALL WELL SHORT OF MY CALLING. Maybe my message is for you to find YOUR CALLING. Everyone falls on hard times in life. Why strip them of their dignity or make them beg for help? There will always be family and friends who will need some help. That doesn’t define who or what they are. They are always the family and friends who are happy to see you if your rich or broke. I get great joy helping these people. They know my message is not pointed at them. But to those who have more then they need yet wouldn’t cross the road to help a freind. Life brings ups and downs. Next time your up bring someone up with you. Peace out. Happy Thanksgiving!

Duke'sth - told ya so.... :)))
It was just your turn to let somebody else be a blessing.

ps - I bet that lady that you never met, but deposited money in her account of $800 to help her save her home, if she never got to say thank you, maybe she just thought oh ya... I finally made a bank error that worked in my favor... ya never know, but although you weren't looking for a TY - she prob would have loved to say a great big Thank You to you with huge ol smile :) God Bless You! I know what it's like. I helped folks, never asked for it back and when I was down for just two months... they were the very ones saying, "you're single, I don't know why you don't have extra tucked away all over the place." From now on, they get LOANS, WITH A PAYBACK DATE. That broke my heart, I mean like thousands, but it's in the past and God will always make a way, sometimes He waits for there to be no other way so so folks have to say... It had to be God!

ps 2 - there may be a diabetic help organization for the meds., the American Diabetic Organization may have quick access to it. If I was in the positive financially - I'd give what I had, but I'm not for now, sorry. I do have an extra perscription discount card I could send you if you want to send me your mailing po box or something. I'm on facebook, just send it via private message.

God provides in times of need and he saw your needs and your deeds do not go unrecognized but come back tenfold. Your in Hawaii , what a blessing, just hang ten.

Today we met with our new investor here in Honolulu. Heinz. He was a blast and I can see us getting along great. He likes to move on things and we should be up and running by Christmas. Stil have some rough spots coming but can see a light at the end of the tunnel. The above was mostly written for my wifes family on facebook. I went off a little and vented because for two days they knew that Wendy is out of meds she needs. Diabetes. Mother, father, sisters, uncles and auntes. Most of which leave on vacation Saturday to Florida wouldn't even respond. I just started writting and kept on going. Kinda like Forest Gump running accross the country but on facebook. LOL. Today my 15 year olds friends all piched in and gave us $115 cash with a nice letter. Total strangers reaching out with compassion. I love our new home, the Great People of Hawaii!!! I am more driven than ever.

This is great news, James!!! Keep up the positive momentum :)))))
And Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

KRSVal's picture

You ARE great James--no falling short of your calling. I know you are in a bad spot now, and I will lift you up in prayer.
I know you already know this, but for everyone else..don't look to get back where you gave. Give and forget...what you give will come back to you somehow, from somewhere--but not where you expect.

bluesuedeshoe's picture

Giving comes from your heart towards the betterment of humanity. It can be time spent, donations, money, a shoulder to cry on.... Those of you who are in your middle years can look at community boards, always need good peeps, and frequently forgotten about...lots of grant money out there if folks are willing to spend the time to get it.

You know I read the whole thing and a list of my own I have and because I get frustrated doesn't mean I stop but in not being so great remember all people including those you dis, as in Kid Rock! We all serve a purpose, yes, especially him. Even he is human and has needs, although it may not be food or money, there's something honey.

Those were some sweet words.

Bobbie Jean_2's picture

Sweet! :))) Yes, there was a song that just came out about hanging in there, that the storm has to run out some time and pass. Have a beautiful Thanksgiving! :))) ps - for that something that you can't help right now, God has a reason - maybe there is a time or two... when you are suppose to be on the receiving end. To do just that receive and know that you are deserving too. just sayin' Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is to NOT help, probably espec for somebody like you as it sounds so second nature for you. But, maybe in a way the way to help, is by not... idk maybe no sleep is kicking in on me here, idk - have a beautiful day.
ps 2 - I think the weed is endless in California too. Now... ik why Kid Rock goes to Cali often regardless of the fluff and stuff - later :)

James, myself, I think you are pretty great.

Hardest part about living in Hawaii is you never run out of weed. Ever.

I have to say one more thing before I take my last and go to bed. I was living the high life when I was doing all these things. Not because I did these things but I did these things because the high life afforded me the pleasure. I always felt like I was walking on air. I would throw $10,000 out at the club and walk back into the Venetian sit down drunk and win $12,000. My life has been so crazy. One thing perfectly clear to me though. I was put to make things better for those around me. It drives me crazy when I can't help others like right now but stand strong with the faith and knowledge that This too soon will pass.

Kid Rock has been my inspiraton many times. His philanthropy is second to none. And that's a big word for me. Once got a fortune cookie that said I will be a Philanthropist in my later years. I said "define later". Later.
