In RodeoHouston Debut, Kid Rock Makes Himself Right At Home

Performers like Alan Jackson and George Strait were born to be on the RodeoHouston stage. Others like Bob Dylan and Janet Jackson may have sounded like a Rodeo reach, but end up pulling off the gig nicely.

And every once in a great while there is an artist who is so perfect for the rodeo stage the only question to ask when it's over is, "Why did it take so long to get these two together?"

Ladies and gentleman of the rodeo, meet Kid Rock... your future.

For one hour and 10 songs to kick off spring break, the Detroit-area rapper-turned-rocker who has dabbled more and more in country in recent years, pulled off the near-impossible at Reliant Stadium. This American Bad Ass made a Monday night at the rodeo ignite with energy normally reserved for weekends.

"I know it's Monday night, but we're gonna turn it into Saturday night," said Mr. Rock as fire canisters exploded and electric guitars, courtesy of his backing Twisted Brown Trucker Band, led him into the blues stomp of new song, "God Bless Saturday," from his latest album, Born Free.

Over the last 13 years fans have watched Kid Rock evolve from pot-smoking, early morning stoned pimp to a Bob Seger-Lynryrd Skynyrd motivated devil without a cause and finally a man who can duet on a balled with Sheryl Crow and date Pamela Anderson simultaneously without making either seem phony. At the rodeo he condensed this metamorphosis down to a handful of songs. And he did it effortlessly.

Appearing in black and gold western wear to open the show, Kid Rock went to work on the buckle n' boot crowd with his 1999 Top 10 hit, "Cowboy" (as if there would be any other opener), with a cover of Waylon Jennings, "Good Ol' Boys" (aka the theme song from "The Dukes of Hazzard") mixed in for good measure.

After that it was love at first sight and the Monday night party was on.

Kid Rock immediately set the gears on his music genre-shifting machine in motion. Stripping down to a T-shirt and his signature pimp fedora, he made a soulful run through an unexpected selection of "Lowlife (Living The Highlife)" from 2007's Rock n Roll Jesus. A quick nod to The Georgia Satellites "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" at the end of the song was just more fuel for the spring break party fire.

Kid Rock is not just just a chameleon when it comes to music styles. He also like to mix up how he plays it. He sat behind a piano and let a talented, soulful back-up singer take vocals for "Care" (originally sung with Mary J. Blige on Born Free) before going semi-acoustic for a sit-down duet with another female band member for past country-crossover hit, "Picture" (a hit with Sheryl Crow nearly a decade ago).

Last week, Janet Jackson made no mention of her last performance at Reliant Stadium: The famed Super Bowl XXXVIII "wardrobe malfunction" in 2004. Kid Rock playfully reminded the crowd he also performed at that Super Bowl, though, after seeing Ms. Jackson's bosom few remember it.

For the final push he played nearly every instrument on stage, including a bad ass ZZ Top lick on electric guitar for signature party anthem "Badwitdaba" and then paid appropriate homage to the occasion by standing solemnly while a saxophone player brought the crowd to attention with a sterling solo of "The Star Spangled Banner" that led into new heartland anthem, "Born Free."

And when it was down, the standing and screaming crowd at Reliant Stadium begged for something rare at the rodeo: an encore. They didn't get it, but by keeping the show just between the lines of clean, but dangerous, he should have a standing invitation to RodeoHouston for years to come.

In hindsight, it's a natural pairing that should have happened long ago. I'm often critical of the choosing of acts at the rodeo, but I give the RodeoHouston bookers high praise for nailing this one.

You ROCKED Reliant Stadium!! I have been a huge fan of yours for several years and my only question to the HLSR is this: WHAT THE HELL TOOK YOU SO LONG TO BOOK KID ROCK!! 65 thousand fans in attendance, the first ever demand for an encore and the best show this native Houstonian has EVER seen at the Rodeo! Well done and cant wait for next year!!!
JLacy's picture

In response to Donna... I'm not a rodeo committee person, but thank you for supporting the HLSR!!! I believe in the work they do every year. Not sure how you could feel ripped off. You did purchase tickets to the HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO. A major Houston event that benefits area youth and education programs, not to mention a lot of prize money for professional rodeo people. The HLSR brings in a lot of money and jobs for the Houston area every year and has done so for over 75 years. Plus you got an awesomely spectacular concert performance to boot. You didn't just purchase a ticket to see Kid Rock, you got all the other stuff included at a price you probably wouldn't be able to pay for just a concert ticket. Yes, it was only an hour long concert, but it was a great concert!!! My ticket did state "concert follows rodeo" but I know not all of them do. The ticket I had for KISS the next night didn't say that at all. But if you know anything about the HLSR, you should know that the rodeo is what they are about. The concert is a bonus. Hopefully you didn't feel so ripped off you won't come back again in the coming years.

I understand the review but honestly HE IS NOT A NEW PERFORMER to the world of Rock and Roll!!!!!HE IS INCREDIBLE AND HE IS A GREAT AMERICAN so band wagon fans need not apply here....everyone is just now seeing what WE the true fans have KNOWN for years and years.....TRUE FANS GET IT!!!!!!!! off my soap box now....LOL

Correction to above article..... The original Female performer on Born Free Album for CARE is Martina McBride (not Mary J Blidge) BEST Rodeo show I have ever attended - BUT 1 hour & 10 songs are just not enough for a Kid Rock Congregation Member! Us "major" Houston fans want & NEED him to come back with his real & Unedited Born Free Tour!!!

The performance by Kid Rock at Reliant Stadium last night was awesome!!!!! He was fantastic at pleasing that country element and us "old fans" too.But really Houston Livestock Show WTF is up ??? An HOUR??????? Just when the crowd was ready for more,it was ALL over!!!!! Loved U Kid....Not so much the livestock show.Kinda feel like we got ripped off by them...Tickets were sold to the performance, stating that it began at 6:45 P.M. Yeah, right....That's when the rodeo started, which was NOT mentioned on the ticket. Sorry Kid...I love your rock to much and an hour just does'nt get it!!!!! Hope we see you back in Texas soon!!!! That 1 hour just left me hungry for more.

Loved the show. We brought the kids to this one. They loved Kid Rock before but now they have fallen in-love with him. Thanks for keeping it real. My family very much enjoyed this show.

Arrrgggghhhh....I am so jealous! I had tickets and was so excited to go to the concert. However, I got the chicken pox last Saturday night! Ahhhh, the joys of being a teacher (there was an outbreak at our school two weeks ago). So now I get to spend my spring break sitting here all itchy, how did I ever get so lucky? I am more upset about missing Kid than having this awful gunk! However, I was there in spirit and listened to American Badass track on my ipod just to toast the man! So glad everyone had a great time, but he never disappoints!

I've NEVER enjoyed a concert at the rodeo as much as I enjoyed Kid Rock last night. It was a wonderful performance. It wasn't just music, there were messages, it was REAL. Thank You, Kid Rock, for continuing to be about more than success. I hope to see Kid Rock at the rodeo again and again! Is this a great country or what????

I have been to a lot of Houston Rodeos over the past few years, but last night's show was by far the best. The place was PACKED especially for a Monday night, and it was rockin. Even the old ladies sitting behind me were dancing in the aisle. Playing Low Life was genius. Everyone leaving that place was blown away. I hope he comes back next year.
