What a lovely article. As a ‘tired, frail, and aching’ human saddened to the core at the level of internal pain manifesting itself in our society, my deepest gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Ritchie for raising such a fine son that Hazel could say “No sweeter, no kinder man has ever said hello to me." A further testament to their good hearts is their tireless love and support, not only for their son, but also for their grandson, who too, is “a nice, well-mannered, handsome young man.” If I may be so bold as to speak to the issue, I applaud you, Junior, for choosing to pursue college. While it is not the be all and end all to life as we know it, it is an opportunity to continue your learning in the classroom of life. I feel deeply for you and encourage you in your journey. I, too, left everything I had known and loved in Wisconsin - my home, my roots, my family, my friends, - to search out my own path God had called me to and, no, it has not been easy and there were many hard, soul-searching moments about my moves and path, but through it all I learned of all that I am, all that He has made me to be, and I still share a love with my family and friends that no geography can dissolve. KD do not stumble over the grumbling of division. It would be easy to take offense over the local out rage of you being honored for your good will but their outrag of you having a confederate flag. This is a time of healing for Detroit and that can not be taken away by dislussions of hidden meanings. Satan would love for us to all stumble over what is not really there. Yes, there is still division between blacks and whites but it is from lack of communication and fear on both sides. I have been blessed to work on a rehab project off of Fenkle. I am very white. It can be challenging at times but I have grown to understand that it is not black or white. It is living in circumstance that are complicated by our history and confussion of what is, what can be and should be! Blessings are all around us and their comments will give cause for discussion of what no one wants to acknolwedges exist...and that can lead to change!
