    Kid Rock, Heroic Detroit Officers To Be Honored By NAACP

    Kid Rock, the officers targeted by the shooting at the Detroit Police Department’s Northwestern District last month and a local community group are to be among those honored at this year’s NAACP Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner.

    During a press conference today at the NAACP office in Detroit, chapter president the Rev. Wendell Anthony said Kid Rock, who is to receive the group’s Great Expectations Award, has been an important booster for Detroit.

    “He’s a champion for Detroit,” Anthony said, noting “this is not just about black folk. This is about all folk who believe in freedom and equality.”

    This year’s dinner, the 56th annual event, is set for 5 p.m. May 1 at Cobo Center. "Access Hollywood" anchor Shaun Robinson will moderate. The theme is “We’ve changed the guard, now let’s guard the change.”

    In addition to Kid Rock, Cmdr. Brian Davis, Sgt. Ray Saati, Sgt. Carrie Shultz and Officer David Anderson, along with other members of the Detroit Police Department’s 6th Precinct, are to be recognized with the group’s Mary White Ovington Freedom and Justice Award. The officers were injured when a gunman, who died in the incident, walked into the station and opened fire unexpectedly.

    And Detroit 300, a group of residents credited with helping bring a serial rapist to justice, is to receive the Ida B. Wells Freedom & Justice Award.

Really an honor. Proud of you Bobby! And nice to be recognized for what you have lived. Went to Civil Rights Institute whilst in Birmingham for you show....incredibly powerful, moving, horrifying, depressing and so hopeful all in one....so well presented and interactive and excellent tool to revisit history, build for the future and to never forget Also,,,,was in Dertroit for first time for your bday party!!!! And was so shocked and inspired by Detroit and the people....so much blight intermingled with SO much spirit and hope....some of the nicest people I've met while traveling...(and they love you!)...helps me to keep faith in man kind.... (PS - and the Detroitians/Michiganders working at the airport are THE nicest, friendliest, most helpful of any airport in the world !! FOR REALS!....It made me cry when I was telling my Mom on the phone while I was there...)

To Everyone receiving the awards, you are all very deserving & help to make the city a better place! If we had more people to stand up like the Detroit 300 group, we would have criminals that would think twice about doing the crimes! Detroit needs to stand up for Detroit like these people that had had enough and were brave enough to Stand Up and do something about it! The police officers that were shot upon at their place of business should never have to go thru that again. I hope the city implements some changes in security. I'm So thankful not one officer was killed in that mess!! Bob Ritchie, I call you that because it might be the Kid Rock Persona that has made u all the money that you donate to different organizations around the city of Detroit and beyond, but it's YOUR heart and your compassion that allows you to give so freely. Thank you for all you do for others less fortunate! You truly are a Champion!
