Lyrics:

Like a deer in headlights
I stood frozen in my tracks
And the weight of the news, it nearly broke my back
It was late September
I remember oh so well
Put a rose in the bible
And placed it upon my shelf

Now when it rains, it pours
Wish I didn’t know now, the things I never knew before
Now when it rains, it pours
Wish I didn’t know now, the things I never knew before

Back then when we were 17
Time was on our side
Holes in our jeans, a pocket full of dreams
The future was Friday night
And we would hang out down by the riverbend
Singing our favorite songs
Laughing and drinking, smokin’ and smiling
Now those days are gone

When it rains, it pours
Wish I didn’t know now, the things I never knew before
Now when it rains, it pours
Wish I didn’t know now, the things I now know for sure

Like a deer in headlights
I stood frozen in my tracks
And the weight of you not here nearly broke my back
And my tears they fell like a monsoon
Underneath the cold fall moon
And somehow God put his hands on your shoulders way too, way too soon

When it rains, it pours
Wish I didn’t know now, the things I never knew before
Now when it rains, it pours
Wish I didn’t know now, the things I now know for sure

When I bought "Born Free" CD this was the one I liked the best in a bittesweet way. I had lost my husband (Bob) just the year before, and even today when I listen to 'When it Rains' (usually over and over I cry. It is a kind of therapy. Thanks Bob Ritchie. You are just gettig better as the days go by. You really know how to put everything to music which is loved by all, especially us fans...

This song rips my soul and spirit to shreds for a couple minutes if i let it. I lost my a very dear friend this past September 30. The words couldn't be any closer to how i feel that he about him being gone so suddenly.

Bobby, I lost my son five years ago. I used some of your music at his funeral. The last time I was alone with him was a beautiful sunny day and we were riding along jammin' out to "Cocky". When I heard this new song of yours, it nearly broke my back all over again. Spreading the pain around seems to help. Thanks so much for the tunes! Jeanie

I would love to hear the story behind this song. The meaning for me is that I was 17 and time was on our side (I was a senior in high school when my brother was killed),holes in our jeans, pocket full of dreams, the future was friday night. He was killed on a friday night in late September (1989). We would all hang out at the sand dunes, singing our favorite songs, laughing and drinking, smoking and smiling, now those days are gone! When it rains...it pours! When the cops came to the door to say he was deceased...I was like a deer in headlights, I stood frozen in my tracks. And the weight of you not here nearly broke my back (and my baby brother), underneath the cold fall moon. And somehow God put his hands on your shoulders way too, way too soon!
That's the thing about music...usually someone can relate...some closer than others! If you do a video on this song, my brother and I would love to be a part of it :)

An absolutely beautiful song. I still remember the afternoon when the phone rang to let me know my longest and dearest friend had lost her battle with cancer the year we would have turned 30. Hard to believe its been 10 years. This reminds me of all the great times we had together and of the other friends I lost who didn't make it to 30 either.

Dear Kid,

Please add this song to your Chicago (2.26) playlist. It reminds me of my Pappaw who was taken away so suddenly three years ago this April. I miss him so much and this song captures the still fresh emotions of losing him. Looking forward to seeing your show again!!

Thank you for this beautiful song. I froze like a deer in the head lights the first time I heard it. Funny thing though I dedicated Born Free to My friend Lindsay. She took her life September 26th.
She was a beautiful tall thin blond with blue eyes extremely intelligent 25 year old with an education and lots of energy and love to give and a lot of friends from boarding school and many here at home. We don,t know why we never will. We all have something to live for never forget it or them. Love to you all!

MY SON DIED MAY 22,2010. HE DIED FROM AN ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSE AFTER A NIGHT OF DRINKING AND PARTYING. SOME ONE IN THE GROUP BROUGHT MORPHINE PILLS.AND THEY DECIDED TO EXPERIMENT. HE WENT TO SLEEP AND DID NOT WAKE UP HE WAS 20 YEARS OLD. HE WAS THE KID HANGING DOWN BY THE RIVER BEND, LAUGHING, DRINKING, SMOKIN' AND SMILING. I LIVE THIS SONG AND IT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME WHEN I LISTEN TO IT. THANK YOU.
