Historically & culturally, the heart of Estero is the spring-fed Estero River, which flows to Estero Bay. Some of the earliest European settlers of the area were fishing families that lived on Mound Key, a mangrove-ringed island that dominates Estero Bay. During the early 1900’s, these families moved upriver to the settlement which came to be known as Estero. It was established & incorporated as a utopian society by Dr. Cyrus Reed Teed followers (Koreshan Unity) & their 1894 320-acre tract is now owned by Florida as the Koreshan State Historic Site. The church was absolutely beautiful and the acoustics were phenomenal!!! It was just pleasant getting away for a little while in the day. My friend took me to The Malt Shop for lunch and we toodled back through and with the too much money she gave me for gas, I was able to get a few needed supplies, too.
