An Applebee's waitress who posted a receipt with a note from a pastor complaining about the automatic gratuity added to the bill on the Internet was fired on Wednesday after the pastor complained to her manager.
Chelsea Welch, the waitress, wrote in an email to Yahoo News that the pastor (who has since been identified as Alois Bell) told Welch's manager at the St. Louis-area Applebee's that the ensuing firestorm had "ruined" her reputation.
"I give God 10%," Bell wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip and scribbling in an emphatic "0" where the tip would be. "Why do you get 18?" (There were more than eight people in Bell's party, triggering the auto-tip.) Bill was $34 and tip was $6 till she crossed it out. Are you kidding me? Cheap ass stiffing a hard working American Waiter!!! Boycott that Church and Applebees.
Welch, who snapped a photo of the bill from a fellow server and uploaded to Reddit, defended her right to post the receipt. "I thought the note was insulting, but also comical," she told Consumerist.com. "And I thought other users would find it entertaining.”
Bell, a pastor at Truth in the World Deliverance Ministries Church, was not amused, and she called Welch's manager to complain and get her fired!
“[It was] a lapse in my character and judgment,” Bell told the Smoking Gun, adding she did not expect her easily recognizable signature would be, as her friend informed her, “all over Yahoo. You went viral!”
“My heart is really broken,” Bell added. “I’ve brought embarrassment to my church and ministry.”
A spokesman for Applebee’s said it apologized to Bell for violating her "right to privacy" and confirmed that Welch “is no longer employed by the franchise."
Welch was surprised that Applebee's fired her, "especially because there was nothing specific in the employee handbook admonishing this behavior."
"I had no intention of starting a witch hunt or hurting anyone. I just wanted to share a picture I found interesting," she said. “I come home exhausted, sore, burnt, dirty and blistered on a good day. And after all that, I can be fired for ‘embarrassing’ someone who directly insults their server on religious grounds.”
Welch also isn't buying Bell's embarrassment. “If this person wrote the note, obviously they wanted it seen by someone," she said. “I’ve been stiffed on tips before, but this is the first time I’ve seen the Big Man used as reasoning."

WOW David you are the man! I think if there was a smart biz owner in her area they would hire her and make it front page news. Free publicity but more than that they could show the world that it isn't right to treat people this way! Stand up for the working person!!! I was surprised how rough some where on here like they would just take this kind of crap and that the waitress was wrong for standing up and against this Pastor! Don't take no crap!

I don't agree Robert. Each person is responsible for their own actions. Had i been this waitress i would have possibly uploaded it with the signature blocked out, but made sure they knew who i was talking about enough. OR perhaps gave a fairly colorful account of the event.
I go to Applebee's and haven't went a bunch of times but i enjoy their menu of 550 calories. It makes being on a high fiber better for your health diet tolerable. YOU gotta cheat a little sometimes or be a very miserable individual. AND I TIP and fair. I may not be rich but i got a tip calculator on my phone and use it. I usually tip slightly more then 20%. NOW for obvious reasons like a chinese buffet i don't always tip. But even then sometimes i leave a buck or two. THAT is some ppl's living, without tips the heating bill don't get paid and other bills. Will i be the person to drop a five, ten, or twenty? Probably not, not unless i am taking a whole bunch of ppl out and it is a fair tip. Will i be chumped and milked. I doubt it. I am fair. I have had wait staff who were piss poor and i won't leave them 20%. If i have to sit there and ask for shit all the time, and i get treated shitty, no you are more then likely not going to get 20%! I work for a living and a tip is a gratuity! I don't eat out a lot but i don't think ooh because you waited on me i gotta leave a fat tip. You do your job, are friendly, show manners, etc you will get a nice tip out of me. I have to wait forever for food, drinks, to be waited on i wouldn't count on a good tip. END of discussion to me....
As someone who endured
As someone who endured waitressing/service from 11 yrs of age to achieve college and post grad work, I applaud you. Very careful to always make my money on volume of customers served. Not individuals. Shame on that woman for publically FBing the acts of one person, and Applebees for not terminating her sooner.

When she accepted the job, she accepted the rules, and I am sure that a national chain of restaurants is NOT that stupid to not have informed both players of this fact. You walk in to work and DEAL with the general public. Some are fabu (I had my books for one whole semester paid for by Lionel Ritchie and his Commodores after months of watching them break in the Northeast, and waiting on them in lime green everything), doing the best I could in the midst of madness. The next table, the next nite, might have been the most honored and esteemed of folks, and I might have given them the best service in the world, but.....stiffed. That is the job.

I ride a high horse because I side the waitress and not the institution? my mother was the poor wild 60s child. my parents were divorced when I was 2 mos and mom didn't remarry for 7 years. To a navy man who was abusive as hell but she wanted out of the house that bad. esp since had been with child twice after the divorce and was forced to give my siblings up at birth for adoptions that were arranged by the church. A seceret that was kept from the rest of the congregation, the community and my sister and I by sending my mother away for 9 mos each time. I was not allowed to know my younger brother or sister growning up because my mother was too poor! It was deemed that since she was unwed and without means that she could afford the kids and esp out of weklock it was just unacceptable by the church and the priest of the day in omaha ne. So no blue you are wrong. I ride a high horse because since I was 7 and moved to Orlando I started working selling fruit from a fruit stand for $10 a day. I've worked for everything I have had all my life no one gave me a dime. I met my bio father at 16 at 19 I asked for $100 to help with food and he said no. At 20 I asked him to teach me the family biz and he said no the insurance would be too high. I have not asked him for anything since but he died 6 years ago. my parents right after high school dropped my and my belongins off at friends apt before I had even asked if I could stay there. I started my own company that year and have scrapped and clawed my way through this life and if I have learned one thing ....it's treat people how I would want to be treated. which includes telling people that I don't know never met that they a ride a high horse. I hear what your saying about two wrongs don't make a right. But I disagree that this tight ass Pastor who first stiffs a waitress then cites that it's on Religous grounds who is found out to be such a bitch then goes back and gets another waiter fired for bringing her actions out in public for everyone to see. I don't agree with Applebee firing a waiter for putting something out there that the Pastor had all ready made public when she wrote the note and stiffed the waiter. She wanted someone to see it....just didn't like it when her congreation saw it too! I'm glad that the waiter did this and I think someone should offer him a better job and that we all should boycott Applebee's. I also think her congregation should send her a message. Next time the basket it passed they should all put notes "give to Caesars what is Caesars and Give to God what is Gods" and give a big fat Zero for her paycheck!!! The waiter who waited on her was reported to have done no wrong! She got stiffed by a Cheap Ass calling herself Christian and it was another non related Waiter who posted the note and the signature who the Pastor went back and got fired! I waited tables from age 21 to 32,.I made as much then in a month as what I make now but then in half the time! Im basical 46,..I learned from the best,..two main rules,.if ya cant be nice to the customer find another line of work which is what I did when the crowed started getting younger and I wanted to pour a tea pitcher on a young girl and knock her up side the head with it. # 2 97% tip the traditional 15% 2% are overtippers and 1% are non belivers in tipping oh and a thired one,..the best tippers are the one who's profession is waiting tables,..yes,.Its a real Job.
