Kid: I could have used your help screwing...
    rocksavedmysoul says (20 Jun '12)

Kid was asked a question on the cruise about what he would be doing if he weren't a rock star (or something like that, I didn't take notes and am going on pure memory). He paused and thought on it for a long time, and then replied he would want to use his hands and build stuff, like furniture or something, but still be Kid Rock (same personality).
I have spent the last three days putting together furniture for my mom's apartment. Although I didn't actually create the furniture, I, nonetheless, had to screw, hammer, and use a wrench to complete the task. While screwing (get your heads out of the gutter), I couldn't help but remember Kid's response. I sure wish I had had his help. My right wrist is now killing me. But, I did it and am really proud of myself. Mom moves in today.

The Clapper...I know it was funny, not so much now ;)

rocksavedmysoul's picture

I spent the night in the old folks' home and was bored to tears. I had to sleep all night with the light on in the living room so if my mom woke up in the night, she could still see in her bedroom (she needs to be able to see her walker). It was perfect for her, but awful for me. I am now looking for THE CLAPPER. I really need one for her. It's hard for her to reach even the light next to her bed. I used to laugh at that commercial. Now, I think the inventor is effin brilliant! Clap on *(clap your hands)*...clap off *(clap your hands)*...clap on, clap off...THE CLAPPER!

Good luck to Mom, Laurie. You are a good daughter. I know it is hard, but I am sure your love for your parents makes things easier for them--bless you :)
Becks, all good advice here. I used to be a Director of Admissions at a college, and what I would tell students is this; use your natural abilities and talents to help you land a career that you will both love, and will make $ for you; don't just 'choose' something because it is a hot area--if you don't have an aptitude toward the field, you will be working uphill. Sounds like you have a few things in mind about what you are good at.. and you are correct about the psych/social work careers, etc. needing further degrees to be employable. Sounds like you have done your research.

Haha oh man, you should have, that is funny!!:) lol about the hair, my G-ma at 95 is still concerned about her hair. Recently she was fretting cause she thought she needed a perm?? I'm thinkin to myself for Christ sake you're 95...old habits die hard, I guess.
I hope your Mom adjusts well to her new apartment.

rocksavedmysoul's picture

btw- I originally had the title saying: KID I COULD HAVE USED YOUR HELP SCREWING.... but I didn't type it cuz I didn't want to piss my husband or Kid's girlfriend off. I thought it would have been a more catchy title, though. LOL
I am sleeping over in the old folks home tonight everyone. WHOOO HOOO, I'm living it up, yes siree!!

rocksavedmysoul's picture

thanks guys...it's gonna take mom a couple of days to get adjusted. I curled her hair for her first trip to the dining room. It was like sending her to her first day at school where she meets everyone.
Beckxy--health care for the elderly is gonna continue to be huge- I have been dealing with it first hand and with the baby boomers approaching that age, there will be even a greater demand for aides, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, medical billing clerks, people who know the ins and outs of medicare and Obamacare, assisted living jobs, home care jobs...you get the picture. I have had a crash course and see this is gonna be a huge problem in the near future. But like Bart and Diana pointed out, you have to really like what you do. Good luck. I'll say a prayer for you for guidance.

RSMS.........I don't follow directions very well. I can look at directions, follow all of the steps in order and STILL it doesn't look like the picture on the box. I had a lot of experience with this when our son was younger and built Legos. My husband and son, on the other hand, just look at the picture, start throwing the pieces together and WHAM, perfect speciman of the product! Not fair. LOL. So happy for your accomplishment! BECKXY.......after working as a vet receptionist for 3 1/2 yrs I realized I wanted to do more. I went back to college at 38, graduated at 40 (I did get to skip some classes due to a previous college degree when I was very young), passed State of Michigan and National Boards and began my career as a Licensed Veterinary Technician. All of the hard work, late nights, tears were worth it. I love my job. The secret is; follow your passion.

Great work rsms--Now everytime you or anyone else uses the furniture you can say with your chest puffed out and patting your own back "I BUILT THAT." Glad to hear she's moving into an apartment and doing better..

Triple L Blessings

Hi Bart... no doubt... you are very wise. I've been doing nothing but cramming in my head.. things like age, school loans, debt that I already owe, likable subject factors, and even physical ability. Love to write, but I don't think I'll land a 60,000 annual salary that way. Love to do medical billing and coding... but maybe 36,000 tops a year. Love psychology... but with hanging around a bunch of therapists for the past five years at my old job makes me run the other direction b/c they don't really make much more then the admins.. unless they have their masters. So, I thought maybe go for the BSN.. and specialize in mental health and addictions... which is would be, perhaps, the best of both worlds. Thanks for your great advice, Bart. Meanwhile, I'm sending over my resume to you and you can contact me for an interview at your earliest convenience.. ; ) Way to go on your success w/o the degree !!

Beckxy: In regards to your decision on how old is too old?

I would suggest you look at the wages. In my job I hire/fire a lot of people, look at a lot of resume's, and constantly interview people. I see a lot of people that thought their degree would be the answer. I don't have a degree and I have 2 people that work for me with their Master's degree. Guess who makes more money - with no college debt.

I think you have to really consider the cost of the education vs. the extra amount that you will make. It you can be a nursing assistant and make $40k, and a registered nurse makes $60k, over time it will be worth it. However, if the degree to be a registered nurse costs $100k, then your break even point will be 5 years - but it might take you 15 to pay back the $100k. (That's the cost of a house and most people take 30 year mortgages)

That's a hard decision, so I'll give you the advise that my Grandpa Ralph always told me: "Do what you love and you will never regret it."

You could take Kid's advice and "don't hang out with carpenters, if you want to be a painter!" Why don't you check with some in the nursing field and seek their advise.

Good luck - Starting over and figuring out your path in life is not easy.

lol.. they're stooges. Naw, I doubt it. It has to be a decade or so ago that my husband and I would watched that show. They may have another show on called 'Men in tool belts'.. possibly on the DIY network or something.

Margo C's picture

I just google The Furniture Guys, I've never seen them before. I watched a YouTube video of one them what a goofy guy lol. Are they still on?

Beckxy's picture

Just figured out the show's name 'The furniture guys'

Beckxy's picture

lol... me too Margo :D

Mrs Cedar Michigan's picture

you go girl!

Beckxy's picture

Margo that sounds like a fun thing to do for a hobby. We used to faithfully watch this show with two dudes that would refurbish furniture. The one guy specialized couches and chairs.. or things you could restuff and staple back together where the other guy resurfaced woodwork. Used old coffee grounds and shellac on everything..lol Fun show.. can't remember the name but they were comical to watch together.

Margo C's picture

@ Beckxy that movie quote is from Forest Gump, I love that movie!

Margo C's picture

Congrats RSMS!!! I'm not very good at putting stuff together & following directions well, usually my husband is better at that than me, but one time I put together a couple nightstands with shelves & I was so proud of myself lol. I'm getting into refinishing furniture myself, just recently I refinished my Moms 1920's Hoosier cabinet that she gave me, I love it, looks really cool:))
I'm sure your Mom will love it Laurie & appreciate your hard work:)

Beckxy's picture

lol.. Congrats RSMS.. takes me a good minute to just to figure out how to hold the diagram... have to take everything out and count it to make sure they gave me everything shown.. then usually there's a screw or piece left over..haha

I've too been pondering over in my mind one of Kid's answers from CTM 2. He was asked, "what's your favorite movie quote" And, he went right into it, verbatim from the movie which made me bust out laughing. I had to look the quote up.. but here it is: "Momma always said there's an awful lot you can tell about a person by their shoes... where they going.. where they've been. I've worn lots of shoes. I bet if I think about it real hard I could remember my first pair of shoes. My momma said they was magic shoes. Momma said they'd take me anywhere." Reason why I thought of this is because I'm trying to seek out my destiny as far as what I should take in college. I googled the words, "How old is too old to go for a registered nursing degree" Anyway... after reading a forum with that same question and thousands of positive answers.. I came on here and read your post, RSMS.... and had to write my thoughts ; ) Looks like there's a Kid Rock QnA question for all of us to ponder ; )

Mr. Bart's picture

Funny, I just listened/watched the cruise Q&A yesterday. He wants to fill a pole barn with equipment and just try to build and fix stuff all day long.

As I listened to his answer, I wondered if he has the talent to do it - and just no time - or if he has no talent (like me) to build stuff, but always thought it would be rewarding.

My brother can take things apart and put them back together, fix just about anything, and all that comes really easy to him. It's like solving the rubik's cube to me. I have to hire all that stuff out - or spend a full day on a single project.....then I think Why the hell did I think I could do this? Then I call my brother and take him out to dinner when he's done. He just laughs at me.

Blue: actually Walmart stuff--Better Homes and Gardens brand with a pretty cherry finish she'll love. Directions weren't so bad. I have heard horror stories about Ikea's directions.

bluesuedeshoe's picture

Congrats to you, I'll bet your Mom will love it. It's the down side to IKEA for sure, but I've done my share of it too.
