    Happy Birthday Billy

My friend and engineer brought over a beat with "Wherewolves of London" looped over it and said "isn't this cool?" I thought it was but just kept noodling on my guitar as it played. I hit a "D" chord, than a '"C" followed by a "G"......!!!!!! Holy Shit! It was the the same progression as my favorite song of all time 'Sweet Home Alabama!' I thought I would do something that had not been done before by mashing the 2 songs up and writing an original melody and lyric over them. I had no idea the song would be a worldwide hit! I'm proud it was, despite what alot of sour puss's think, that I just stole a song, blah blah blah, if it were that easy, they would surely be doing it rather than talking shit about me! But besides all that, the thing I cherish most about that song and space in time is my old friend Billy Powell. He is the MOST underated piano player of all time, PERIOD. Not only was I able to tour with him and his little band Lynyrd Skynyrd!!!!!!!!!!, I was able to become friends with him. I can't exspress to you all enough of how great of a person this man was. When I was almost finished with "All Summer Long" I called Billy and told him what i had done and asked him if he would re play those incredible licks from the original song on my new tune. He went out of his way to drive from another city to my studio on a day off, walked in and played his heart out for the next few hours. My jaw was on the floor watching him play as well as everyone else's who was with us in my studio. I called him a few days later and asked where I should send payment for his services.....HE GOT MAD and said, "Bobby, were friends, that's what friends do for each other." he was offended i offered to pay him and refused it!!! What a beautiful soul and a true American treasure this man was and always will be. Billy would have turned 60 years old today. Happy Birthday my old friend, hope your ticklin those keys up there with the big man.

    Love ya, Bobby.

Thanks for The Story Bobby..Billy brought me to see you in St Aug in 2008..We played together in a Christian Rock Band called "Vision"..Ellen and I just spent a couple of hours together talking and she told me what you had written..you sure pegged him..He was such a Great person and an even more phenomenal classically trained pianist who just happened to be the greatest "Honky Tonk" rock-n-roll pianist ever and a True Southern Gentlemen..who thought very highly of you and was proud to be called your friend..Once again..thanks..Rocco

Thank you J9MILL, for continuing an ad nausea conversation involving Mr. Ritchie’s courageous artistry and his neighbors’ subsequent judgment. Blah, blah, blah, can we change the channel, please? Are we scared because Mr. Ritchie is honest to his core? I covered my fear, pain, and heart scars; and I would not have withstood the technology-and-human-gossip-driven-judgmental-scrutiny under which Mr. Ritchie has been relentlessly subjected…until now. Mr. Ritchie is mature, honest, brave, generous, courageous, and gracious as is evidenced by his deep and wide philanthropic and business actions. He does not mince his words. Kudos, Mr. Ritchie!!! I’ve witnessed, studied, and personally experienced humankind long enough to know lashing out at others is indicative of my own personal level of pain and fear. In this world, we all possess and sling intentional and unintentional heart scars. We all find ways to soothe them. Judgment arises when we fail to lovingly discern from a different perspective. Songs may be interpreted as glorifying instead of honest-laden; it’s a matter of perspective. Mr. Ritchie does not lie to us about consequences of our behavior. Instead of disparaging, judging, and glorifying our neighbors’ actions with ‘other-than-my-own-quirks-making-me-feel-better-about-myself reality TV shows’, would we chose to use our time addressing our own personal pain, fear, and heart scars? In Mr. Ritchie, and through his artistry, I have found a brave and resilient soul who models hope, faith, truth, and love to me. Today lives no more kind and no more sweet man, who walks amongst us, shares his depth of pain while healing and growing, and continues to bring joy to our wearied masses. May you continue to heal, use your own artistry to give voice to love, and never weary of doing good.

I LOVE my new hotspot!!! I’ve been thinking (shocker, I know) and I cherish your sharing with me your significance of June 3, “Sweet Home Alabama” (good movie, too) and “All Summer Long.” Simply and humbly, thank you for sharing this with me. I feel more peaceful and easy right now. I would like to share with you why I love your song so much and it is solely because of your artistry, and yours alone, Mr. Ritchie. I am in no way disparaging Lynyrd Skynyrd for I would not wish to offend them and their musical masterpieces. But it is your combination of the two songs added to your original melody and lyric that make me dance with abandon. And it is your artistic words painting for me this glorious younger me I never have yet lived, but you take me there and make me long to experience it. And it is your song which was the last before bar time and others had long since stopped dancing. But not me…while they do not remember my name they affectionately call me “The Dancing Lady.” And it is your song that brought out tired dancers to the dance floor and our souls were refreshed by your artistry and I could feel all our hearts lift…the smiles and our singing along proved it. Again, simply and humbly, thank you for giving me that soul-refreshing experience. You and your artistry lift up weary souls and bring them great joy. I know firsthand. You’ve done it for me. (Pause…tears). I’m off to Bell South with a pink post it note I would love to share with my perfectly imperfect prince. My wish to the full moon. (Speaking aloud hopes, prayers, and wishes create sound and vibration and good things bear good fruit.) I’m picking up a good vibration. I believe I will have a summer of which I’ve always dreamed…all summer long. All my love. P.S. Thanks for your patience with my re-self-teaching of technology while I was otherwise occupied. I feel like a newbie in many ways. Grins :)

Dear Bob, I’ve listened to “All Summer Long” a million times because I love everything about it, the lyrics, the beat, the tune and from the beginning I heard the Werewolves of London and Sweet home Alabama but didn’t really think too much about it…but I had to run out to my jeep and get my Rock n Roll Jesus CD and “really” listen to it now. (I actually did attend “The Recording Workshop” in Chillicothe OH, unfortunately I never did anything with it…it’s a long story) You are fucking brilliant!! Wow!! ........I never knew there was people out there that dogged on your song…of course I wouldn’t pay any attention to them if they did. Thank you so much for sharing that story. That is soooo cooool!! I did not know that was Billy Powell on the piano but how perfect for him to be on there!!. My all time favorite piano of anything is on Tuesday’s Gone & Free bird….Love Love Love it!! For me, Billy’s piano in Lynyrd Skynyrd was what set them way up and apart from….Blackfoot (even though I do love me some Train…Train & Highway song). Thank you so much again for sharing, now every time when I hear “All Summer Long” it will always have an even richer meaning to it added on to all my “teenage camping memories” (in northern Michigan). What a nice thing you did for your friend on his birthday (maybe without even realizing it) we’ll all remember him and the kind words you said about him, every time we hear “All Summer Long”. Happy Birthday Billy!!! ….RIP…

You bring me such joy, Mr. Ritchie!!! Thank you for your tender tribute to a friend and letting us in a bit on some of the wonderful and tragic, heart-breaking things you experience. I am able to understand your beautiful soul more and more when you communicate, thus my love for you continues to grow exponetially. I hope Billy's twinkling those ivories with my dad - quite a jam session must be going on up there where I know they are protected, loved, and joyous. I agree, screw the naysayers about how 'easy' it was to create All Summer Long for it was you, your ear, and your artistry that created an anthem for our souls...and I deeply thank you. I'll presume you made it safely in your travels from your shows. I smile at the thought. I'm in Missoula for a bit and arriving home around 2:00. My roommate is gone the rest of the day because riding his motorcycle to Hamilton when we get home and traveling to a meeting from 6:30 - 8:30. I'll be working at the house and maybe will take Sonya for a walk on Bell South later this evening. I'm bummed, my roommate had promised me a cycle ride (I love them but need a refresher) but even on this glorious day of summer I am left dreaming. I don't know how He does it, but He renews my faith and hope each day that I will meet in person the Man of my Dreams. He knows I want to laugh and smile and talk and just spend time, however long, with him. Today my hopes are the highest. I hope you are having a beautiful and full-of-fun summer day, Mr. Ritchie!!! I continue dancing in the streets, smiling, laughing, and thinking of you and your strong and tender heart (oh, and your smile, sparkling blue eyes...and your sexy voice and soul-refreshing laugh)!!! And, I think I would have liked Billy...it's not about the money...it's about friendships and all the lengths we go to so we may hold on to the precious few real true friends. We do what we have to and complement each other with our strengths and weaknesses thus God sighs with love.

Thanks for a great "behind the scenes" story. I've listened to and played Skynyrd for over 30 years. I must admit I was a bit of a skeptic at first. But after seeing you with Skynyrd all that went away. This just solidifies who you are and what your about. Happy birthday Billy! Keep on rocking, Bob!

Screw all the nay-sayers. I feel sorry for the ones who just don't "get it". They are missing out on some really fantastic music and so many great people in this KR community, including you Bob. Keep doing your thing. RIP and Happy Birthday Billy. To both of you - thanks for sharing your gifts with us. Man, we're blessed!

All Summer Long is a classic now. There is just something fun about opening up the car windows and driving with the song blaring out of the speakers. The minute you hear the first beat come from the radio (Ipod, CD, etc) it IS Summer (in Southeast, Michigan!) LOL

That's a cool story. All Summer Long is a great song, no matter what a few ignorant jerks may say about it....your goin' hahahahaha all the way to the bank bitch!!!

Hey there Mr. Kid Rock, I just got back from seeing you in Boston and AC. Amazing shows; no doubt about it. Thanks! I've been a fan forever, I always go to your shows. I should feel stoked, yet I feel depressingly conflicted about you. Here's why: your music is awesome, you're growing as an artist, you're getting props all over the map, you're getting involved in charity work... You're on the right track, right? Why, then, do you still glamorize booze and drugs? Maybe you're still in the thick of all that shit? As someone who's been in the thick of it myself and has been blessed to be able to let it go, I can tell you, absolutely, that being drunk and high is not being honest w/ yourself. That's your deal, right? Looking in the mirror and knowing you're being true to yourself? You must realize that drug addiction is a huge part of poverty. It's the root of most problems. Certainly the ones you seem to care about. If you want to help people in a meaningful way, you may want to reconsider your attachment to a lifestyle that for the majority of people ends in disaster. You've reached a place where you can positively affect millions of people. What a gift! You've been placed there for a reason. Nothing is accidental. Please give that the respect it deserves. Consider what message you send. Cocain? I Love Krystal? Someone once told me that I was filling a hole inside myself w booze and drugs and that the hole is supposed to be filled with God's love. I laughed at the time but I now know it to be true. Maybe that's why I'm writing this. Maybe I'm just the messenger. So, instead of listening to "Live Trucker" and reminiscing about HOB and AC, I'm listening to Fleetwood Mac 'Rumours" and writing to a man I don't even know. But, actually, I do know you. We're all the same inside. "Finally, babbyy, truth has been told, now you tell me that I'm crazy, it's nothin that I didn't know...." Stevie Nicks was a badass too! You got this, Rock. Thanks for listening. oxx

Funny....I was flipping thru the radio stations today after the Tigers game and came across "All Summer Long". As usual - I wasn't sure what kind of station it was on. It ended up being the local county station. I was thinking how I don't normally like the "hit" from an album because it gets played so much. However - All Summer Long will always be on my playlist. I know that people in the industry give you a hard time about this song - but I really like it and enjoy it. I have read all the reviews and how you are just ripping off 2 classic songs - but no one has put it all together like you have. I hope you keep playing it live - it's great - plus the moraccas make it even more special. RIP - Billy Powell. He has been a pillar of classic rock for so long - I think people forgot how good he was. Sixty is WAY too young. Thanks for sharing your thoughts today KID!

God rest his soul. Good friends are hard to find. Everyone has a motive these days. What happened to true friendship? Lord send us some angels, we sure could use some tonight.

Who needs friends when we have enemas... Quoted by an old man I took care of in the hospital. I loved his humor. Had to share it. Comedy is not always pretty but it damn sure is funny. Read new tunes by me on extreme Kid Rock. Billy sounds like a smart , good friend. Bravo Billy.... My new name for him. Yours is Kid did it!

Thank You for remembering Billy on this day Bobby. How sincere. I believe Billy Powell was the greatest piano player of our time. There will never be another like him. He was a kind hearted man, yet a rebel till the end. He is greatly missed by those who loved him. We not only lost a good friend, we lost a legend. May he rest in peace, and who knows...we might meet again someday! Peace.
