    Detroit Manufacturing

We created "Made In Detroit" in 1991 to create jobs and positive feelings about manufacturing in the City of Detroit. Kid Rock bought it in 2005 and moved the company out of Detroit entirely. Today's Detroit Free Press reports that he is putting "Made in Detroit" on foreign-made shirts. Disappointing...is Kid Rock above the law/rules?

Come on, what do you expect to hear him say?

'I'm sorry, I cheated on the shirts, they were not created from cotton fluff full to logo within the confines of the city of Detroit"

Now, if there are children found doing the cotton stringing, dying and sewing, shade of Cathy Lee, we gotta problem.

Other than that, how do you wish Tommy to run the company?

Come on Bob speak out and fix this. Just pop the extra few bucks for USA made shirts and print them in Detroit or the metro area and squash all this man. Only you can stop this forest fire. If you made the call to change things up be a stand up guy and own it and make it right. If someone in your company did it without your knowing you don't have to throw them under the bus, just make it right and handle thos involved internal as you see fit and move ahead. This is bad for you and Detroit and that can't be what you want is it? Where is the no crap taking American Badass? Speak out, the longer you wait the more fans your losing.

After a 2010 KR Pine Knob concert on our back to the hotel some dude in our shuttle van was bitchin' about the t-shirts that came with the Vip pkg. that they weren't made in Detroit or USA...it doesn't matter to me, sure it'd be nice if everything we bought was made in the USA, but I'm not gonna not buy it cause it's not.

Just ordered a long sleeve v neck so we shall see what happens. Tag? No tag?

MID has 8-10 full time peeps, I think.

The former owner is a cluckhead who cannot "let go."

Mr. Bart's picture

It would be nice if there was a t-shirt company that was made in the USA. I'm sure Bob has looked into this further. He has always checked Michigan first, then USA. I'm sure he doesn't have much choice in this one.

I never expected the actual t-shirt to be "made in detroit", I just assumed the design, screen-printing, distribution, promotion, etc were all Detroit-area jobs.

Bob has also said many times that he does not make any money on this clothing line. So it's not like selling t-shirts has made him rich. He's just trying to do his part with something fun and cool. He wears a lot of t-shirts, beanies, hats, etc....so why not make something you like and contribute to the local economy?

I didn't see where the hats, signs, jackets, etc were made...I'm sure they aren't made in Detroit either.

This is just a slow news day - so these online sites jumped on this article.

It's a non-issue for me. If Bob would drop the prices a little, I would buy a lot more MID stuff.

Cheryl, it sounds like the missing tags are a real issue.

For more background on this, including the former MID owner's comments, please hit the following link at FREEP and read the comments. Interesting. Wonder what Tommy will do next?

Seems, I heard a while back that there are only one or two cotton factories left in the states. I took "Made In Detroit" to mean "printed" in Detroit. Never really thought the shirts were actually made here.

bluesuedeshoe's picture

Dunno what they could say unless caught cutting labels off. It's just a fact that 99% of all stock cotton t's (blanks) are not made in the USA, let alone Detroit City limits.

See this is what I mean about the TMZ impact. You act the fool (Bob) and then folks go looking for trouble. I cannot image the DFP making this "news" but there it is, and the next thing you know it's a national issue. Why is it an item? Because he lit up at a Travis Tritt show.

Bob'd say, any publicity is good.

Me? I say he sets himself up for trouble. He's worth a lot of money. Folks paid to do so need to protect him more too. He needs a larger circle between himself and public, which is sad.

The benefit is that we fans stand further back, and the label can then market pop star pap to us. And never send the t shirt, when we pay for it first.

I KNEW Someone would remember that whole newspaper fiasco---- RSMS :-)
Now this whole "Made In Detroit" thing just hit "The Washington Post" -----when you pull up this site (on Yahoo)---it's the first article-----
Hopefully---there is some kinda retort (at least I am hoping so--lol :-) outta the ~American Badass Camp-----

rocksavedmysoul's picture

yup- a bunch of my friends were hired as scabs during that strike. I wouldn't cross that line. They ended up with permanent jobs there. Shows you what morals does to ya (screws ya).

THANK YOU ~DRG for posting the article link :-)
To me----it sounds like most of the merch they found was made here in the USA----and here's another thought----with all of the piracy that is possible these days----Thanks to the Internet and stellar copiers-----who's to say that someone else is not putting a "MID" logo on a foriegn-made shirt? Just a thought-----
AND---lol----i want to point out----that anyone who lived in Detroit and the surrounding metro areas during the "great Detroit News and Free Press strikes" back in the day----didn't and couldn't get a damn paper for like a year-----
Anyone remember that??

bluesuedeshoe's picture

Lots of behind the scenes crap here, too. Bobby Moscow made many promises which maybe Made in Detroit felt were not held to.....but, then caveat emptor.....you sell the company, you lose the company.

It's tough when something you put your blood sweat and tears into falls victim to the economy and the lack of cash than to do more than sell. Especially if it takes off after you do sell it.

The sellee happens to be a young kid on the way up with a big mouth and lots and lots of money to invest. Outside Detroit.

Just about every single stock t shirt made is this world is made on foreign soil.

What's the beef? What's the crime???

DetroitRockGirl's picture

I take more issue with this company trying to act like they're holier than thou by throwing Kid Rock under the bus...a lot of local people subscribe to this company's page and the amount of KR slamming being done by the company is rather surprsing......
one must wonder....where aree THEIR tshirts manufactured?

also try looking at Detroit free press or the Atlantic Wire..Seems to be a lot of talk about this going around..Haven't read any of the articles myself yet, but plan too..

Triple L Blessings

Mrs Cedar Michigan's picture

yeah...I would like to read the article too....

MsBehavin's picture

And I don't know if this is true or not----but before Bob bought the company----I had heard that Eminem owned it for a little while-----like I said----that's just what I heard---many years ago.
Neither One of those Guys would sell-out Their Home Town. That's what I Believe.

MsBehavin's picture

Okay----back in 2005---there was this yearly event called "Dally in the Alley" right downtown----I was there and so was "Made In Detroit"----(like they were every year--for several years before that)
~Dally in the Alley" was an annual event open ONLY to Small Businesses and Independent Artists---the Folks who ran it---made sure that there were NO Corporate sponsored crap. Refreshing.
So----if this Detroit Free Press article is true (that the stuff is made overseas) what happened to the "MID" factory----in Detroit?
And if You will---DetroitRockGirl ~PLEASE post a link to the actual Free Press Article---some of us don't have Facebook---
I'd like to read the entire Free Press article.
Thank You in advance :-)

.....So the company that started MID (Detroit Manufacturing) apparently has a big ol' problem with KR, gone so far as to say he is a liar...
so I will assume that before the company was owned by KR the shirts were REALLY Made in Detroit?
...guess this town just ain't big enough for everyone selling shirts...........sad.
