Susan Tompor: Kid Rock's clothing line says 'Made in Detroit' -- but isn't

    Dear Susan Tompor,

Let me first start off by cordially inviting you to go fuck yourself. I have always said that I do care what people in my hometown think of me, and the hatchet job you have just written about The Made In Detroit company in The Detroit Free Press has made me so upset that I am left with no choice but to defend myself and my company. I purchased MID out of bankruptcy and asked a friend of mine (Tom Dubak) to give up the security of a good paying job at a car dealership for a chance to help revitalize this brand. The goal of MID is to re-instill a sense of Detroit pride, give back to the community, try to create jobs in our home state and maybe one day build our own facility somewhere close to the riverfront in Detroit. We have succeeded in most of the this and have big plans for the future, not to mention the scholarship fund we have created at Wayne State, the numerous sponsorships we do every year and the hundreds of thousands of dollars we have given to local charities (all of which somehow had no place in your attempt to slander us in your article).

You failed to say that the majority of our products are in fact MADE IN AMERICA. Let me address the small number of MID products not made in America, which were explained to you, but that you felt unimportant to print as part of a well-balanced and fair story. You didn’t care about printing the fact that 98 percent of all clothing sold in America is not made in America. It’s very difficult to even find quality and affordable USA made products, lord knows we have been looking from day one, not only for the MID brand but also for the Kid Rock merchandise we sell on tour. A simple phone call to my KR merchandise company FEA or calls to our suppliers or any other clothing company in America would have told you this. The majority of the clothes that are made in America still import the cottons and other parts needed to make these items from outside of the country.

In addition, we have NEVER laid claim to our items actually being made in Detroit, it’s been on our website since we took the company out of bankruptcy what we are about –

Made In Detroit has created jobs for people in and around Detroit, we’ve made money for local merchants and donated money to many local charities on behalf of MID, Badass Beer and The Kid Rock Foundation along with creating 7 jobs at MID alone. As the owner of Made In Detroit I’ve never taken a dime of salary or profit or even expensed a meal. We, like most brands in America, use some products that are not created in America. That doesn’t mean we can’t do better. We’re trying to move away from those products while still keeping our prices affordable and keeping us and the stores that depend on us in business. You will find a list of things we have done with MID below in which we are extremely proud and because of these and the many other things I have been able to do I walk around my hometown with my head held high. You and your editors ought to be ashamed of yourselves for not only entirely missing the point of what we do but trying to knock down MID, myself and other local brands that have done nothing more than try to prop our city and state up.

I’ll finish by saying that as a result of your article and the lack of respect from not only you but from your editors, The Detroit Free press is on my shit list and my subscription has been canceled. And yes, I will go so far as to ask other like minded folks to do the same if they are tired of garbage, irresponsible reporting like yours.

If there is one thing I have learned from growing up in and around Detroit it’s “Don’t take any shit from no one and be proud of where you come from!” I am. FUCK YOU.

And to the bloggers and press, if you choose to only print part of my statement, please give a link to my website or make my whole statement available on yours.

    Sincerely,
    Kid Rock

You tell her Kid Rock.....it's perfectly okay to defend yourself and what you know to be true and what you stand for and believe in. I admire you for that. Take Care & Rock On. Cindy

Well I have to admit that I did think the items were made in Detroit, but...I will claim that it is because I probably did not read the fine print and I no longer live in Michigan. In any case they are quality products and I certainly respect the work that Mr. Ritchie is doing and the support he has for Detroit and Michigan--thanks for all that you do!
Susan Alexander's picture

It's not a claim...it's a brand name!

No, really, Bobby. How do you really feel about Susie Thumper's hatchet piece? :) Your response was awesome and just another reason why so many of us can relate to you and your music. I'm thinking instead of a hand flipping the 'bird' to the Freep shirt, how about the American BadAss eagle with a tattered Freep in its talons?
millerp1969's picture

Well said!!! For those of us who have taken the time to look behind the curtain to see all the good you do for so many people, thank you. I will be the first to admit that at one point I only knew you by articles such as this, then I saw you in concert for the first time and it was clear that you genuinely care. Others give it lip service, but you SHOW that you care. It's a shame that it's more important in our culture to try to rip someone down rather than applaud their good deeds. It's unfortunate that is what sells and others find ways to feel better about themselves by tearing others apart. Your message comes through loud & clear to your fans and I hope we can make you proud by following in your footsteps to do our part in helping others. More people like Susan need to be called out for their lack of journalistic integrity.

Hey Cowboy Don't waste any more time worrying about Susan and her half-ass article. There will always be unhappy people who try to make themselves look better by making someone else look bad. She actually accomplished the exact opposite, what a jackholel At the end of the day you know who you are, what you have done and haven't done and you can hold your head high. The good news is at the end of the day Susan Tompor is still Susan Tompor and you are KID FUCKIN' ROCK! Wish we were friends....Shelli

I have to laugh when Susan Tompor has the nerve to say, "Some days, driving north or south on Woodward, I get a bit choked up when I hear him sing: "I heard them say they're shuttin' Detroit down. But I won't leave cuz' this is my hometown." When in her tasteless, as well as tactless, article she has the nerve to attack not only a company that is striving to improve the city of Detroit, but the entirety of the state of Michigan as well. It is unsettling that she is even aloud to be in print when she lacks the basic skills of a journalist, knowledgable and accurate information. Not only did she misrepresent the company that was the basis of her story, but she lacked the common sense to realize who that company belonged to.

Thank you Kid Rock for all that you have done not only for the City of Detroit but also for The State of Michigan and surrounding organizations. Your charitable contributions are very impressive. You are a humble man who has not let Hollywood sell you out. Truth is refreshing and you are a shining example. Much love.

Doesn't she remind you of one of those angry nuns in Catholic gradeschool? Yea angry, and I wonder why! Ha,ha,ha. She's the type that would beat the shit out of you because she couldn't beat anything else. Ha,ha,ha.....HELLLP. Oh Lord, I'm so sorry to throw that one in! OMG, I just got The Pgh. Catholic in the mail right now and there's a bunch of nuns on the front page! It says, Celebrating World Day for Consecrated Life! Oh my, and one of the nuns actually looks like this Susan! How weird is that? As for me, I'm the horse of another color...Consecrated due to having just a little too much! Ha,ha,ha! Hi, I'm Sister Mary Sunshine......

You tell her Kid Rock !!! And I guess you did :) "go f_ _ _ herself" and may I add , and the white horse she rode in on ! Obviously she is blind to the reason behind everything you do. You have a good heart man !!! Don't let trash get ya down, stay positive! People that are like her and that Press must not do research and get the facts straight nor do they see the positive of things. Remember this about people ... when someone does you wrong ... what goes around comes around and the good thing about that is, you don't have to do a thing, the man upstairs always sees to it in his own time. Love ya ! hang in there and remember there are many others that recognize your awesome heart.

I used to spend over $300,000 a month buying newspaper advertising. Once I found a new way of marketing and stopped they dropped their rates by over half. Whores!!! They could have charged me all most $2M less in one year but instead raped me even though we all know newspapers every where are going out of business and their readership is dieing. Soon the Online Generation will stop the printing of papers and the waste of paper and get all their news through electronic media. Funny that when your spending big bucks with the news paper, articles like that never get printed. We all do what we can let's just stop giving any money to the papers and see what happens. Save a tree!!! Get your news from the KRC!!! Party!!!

WOW! Gotta say that there will always be those that are trying to make a name for themselves vs. realizing the greater good for all! This is truly unbelievable to tear down someone and something that is doing so much good for the community. Plus it just goes to show that the Detroit Free Press has nothing better to do with their time and can not TRULY report on REAL news! We will always have respect for you Kid Rock! While I don't live in Detroit; America truly appreciates people like you that give back to your community. America needs more people like you! Thanks again for being a TRULY good person!

I have so much respect for what you do as a person and with your foundation and charities. I think you are an inspiration to America. We need something positive in our country to raise morale. You represent that. Thank you for what you do.

Keep your head up Robert! People like to throw stones at things that shine! You don't need to defend yourself against the ignorance of others! We love and appreciate all the things you do, to help create jobs where ever and when ever you can in Michigan. Positive side....there are 7 more people employed right now in Detroit, that didn't have a job! I for one will purchase what I can from MID! If only for the cause of keeping them employed! Rock on, Baby rock on! I have found that the more people try to find something negative about someone else, are the people that tend to have the most negativity in their lives!! You have to love that Karma bus...just saying!!

Hope you all cancelled your subscriptions. Cancelled ours from our town along time ago because of bullshit like this!!! Drove 5 hrs to buy a camper in chicago cuz local dealer wanted $7000 more. We can help out with many more volunteer projects with the money we saved. Do what you gotta do to continue to help others and screw these assholes!!! By the way even the people at camper dealership recognize all the good you do. Your name came up when I made sure I could play your videos on camper TV while on our travels...LOVE YOU ALWAYS!!!!

Susan Tompor, Don't ever for one minute ever think that Kid Rock has to donate shit. To anyone. Or help any one for that matter. He does this out of the kindness of his own heart. Meaning there is no entitlement to these donations. One bad apple can ruin it for the rest.
STAUTER007's picture

One more thing... She should really move.
