Susan Tompor: Kid Rock's clothing line says 'Made in Detroit' -- but isn't

    Dear Susan Tompor,

Let me first start off by cordially inviting you to go fuck yourself. I have always said that I do care what people in my hometown think of me, and the hatchet job you have just written about The Made In Detroit company in The Detroit Free Press has made me so upset that I am left with no choice but to defend myself and my company. I purchased MID out of bankruptcy and asked a friend of mine (Tom Dubak) to give up the security of a good paying job at a car dealership for a chance to help revitalize this brand. The goal of MID is to re-instill a sense of Detroit pride, give back to the community, try to create jobs in our home state and maybe one day build our own facility somewhere close to the riverfront in Detroit. We have succeeded in most of the this and have big plans for the future, not to mention the scholarship fund we have created at Wayne State, the numerous sponsorships we do every year and the hundreds of thousands of dollars we have given to local charities (all of which somehow had no place in your attempt to slander us in your article).

You failed to say that the majority of our products are in fact MADE IN AMERICA. Let me address the small number of MID products not made in America, which were explained to you, but that you felt unimportant to print as part of a well-balanced and fair story. You didn’t care about printing the fact that 98 percent of all clothing sold in America is not made in America. It’s very difficult to even find quality and affordable USA made products, lord knows we have been looking from day one, not only for the MID brand but also for the Kid Rock merchandise we sell on tour. A simple phone call to my KR merchandise company FEA or calls to our suppliers or any other clothing company in America would have told you this. The majority of the clothes that are made in America still import the cottons and other parts needed to make these items from outside of the country.

In addition, we have NEVER laid claim to our items actually being made in Detroit, it’s been on our website since we took the company out of bankruptcy what we are about –

Made In Detroit has created jobs for people in and around Detroit, we’ve made money for local merchants and donated money to many local charities on behalf of MID, Badass Beer and The Kid Rock Foundation along with creating 7 jobs at MID alone. As the owner of Made In Detroit I’ve never taken a dime of salary or profit or even expensed a meal. We, like most brands in America, use some products that are not created in America. That doesn’t mean we can’t do better. We’re trying to move away from those products while still keeping our prices affordable and keeping us and the stores that depend on us in business. You will find a list of things we have done with MID below in which we are extremely proud and because of these and the many other things I have been able to do I walk around my hometown with my head held high. You and your editors ought to be ashamed of yourselves for not only entirely missing the point of what we do but trying to knock down MID, myself and other local brands that have done nothing more than try to prop our city and state up.

I’ll finish by saying that as a result of your article and the lack of respect from not only you but from your editors, The Detroit Free press is on my shit list and my subscription has been canceled. And yes, I will go so far as to ask other like minded folks to do the same if they are tired of garbage, irresponsible reporting like yours.

If there is one thing I have learned from growing up in and around Detroit it’s “Don’t take any shit from no one and be proud of where you come from!” I am. FUCK YOU.

And to the bloggers and press, if you choose to only print part of my statement, please give a link to my website or make my whole statement available on yours.

    Sincerely,
    Kid Rock

Defamation of Character is in order. And, yes a big Fuck her is in order. I would definitely call my favorite lawyer and have him/her make that news paper retract that article as well as issue an apology. Not just an apology a public apology. For the reals. I mean really who does she think she is? They would do it to you in a heart beat. They are doing it to you with no regard. So yeah she has it coming.

Kid and the MID team keep up the great work and I'll keep buying the MADE IN DETROIT product. I was raised to think for myself and i can see the big picture. you people at mid are doing a wonderful thing by giving back. I wonder how much effort susan tompor has made in giving back. Thanks for helping those in need..!!!!!! A TRUE FAN

It is a shame that a Detroit newspaper would slander Made in Detroit, given that the mission of the company is to restore pride in a city that has long suffered from a tarnished reputation. Interestingly, the newspaper is not printed in Detroit either, when they built a new printing press they did so in Sterling Heights; does that mean they should not have the right to call themselves the Detroit Free Press? A friend of mine has coined the phrase 'Detroit has heart' and with both your music and the MID label you are contributing enormously to the cause of helping the world realize what an awesome place Detroit is. Your fans probably already know what a philanthropist you are, but for those who didn't they do now. So thanks, Susan Tompor, for shedding light on the truth, not by the ridiculous article you wrote, but for it's aftermath - the truth always rises to the top. Keep using that lovely voice of yours, Kid, to speak out for all of those who can't. You are a good man with a big heart and may God continue to shower you with blessings for all of the goodness you contribute to the world!

Interesting debate. As a Kid Rock fan, I can certainly see how this sort of story would certainly feel like a knife in the back in your hometown. But as a journalist, I have to disagree with the assumption that this is irresponsible. The headline is perhaps the most misleading and damning part of it, given that it sensationalizes, but the writer does make many references to the good Kid Rock does in his home town, has many sources, and does indeed do all the good work that a story requires. My guess is the writer never imagined the firestorm that this would create. She may have even set out to investigate this as a "isn't that odd" type of story, but the headline clearly sells it differently. And, of course, Kid Rock's response, justified in some ways, only fuelled things. Overall, I have to say the actual meat and potatoes of the piece is good reporting. Just shows you what a poorly written headline can do. Unfortunate it has cause such negativity.

Did you send this to the "Free Press"? I highly suggest you clean it up-a bit-and send it. She is ignorant-as you intelligently point out! I am canceling my subscription TODAY. I smell a new song about liberal media....or a picture of her at your concert---right after Fieger's & Kwame's. Much love. Haters gonna hate.
Ann Williams's picture

FUCK THAT BITCH!! KidRock does more for Detroit than she ever has! I would bet my ass on that! And I think you should bring that clothing line on down to BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA where YOU and ALL the hard work you do is very appricaited!! That BITCH is just looking for some attention, WRONG place to look! NEVER DISRESPECT THE ROCK GODDAMNIT!!!
Laurie Wilke's picture

I suggest that right now Susan Tompor look at all the tags on her clothing and see what country they were made in. As a writer Susan wanted attention so she left out valuable information from the public. Shouldn't of pissed of Kid Rock. I don't think Susan fully knew what she was doing. Lets see how many people in Michigan cancell the Detroit News and how long she will have a job due to poor reporting. That what wrong with the press and writers they tell half truths. Karma going to get you Susan Tompor. You don't piss off Kid Rock or his fans which is including me....................
kidrocket99's picture

Kid should get her a giant pet rock (the size of a bolder) and put the name Rock on it so she could go and crawl under it! I'd hate to be her right about now! ha,ha,ha.

Some people are so misarable with their own life that they take it out on good AMERICAN citizens. I proudly wear my Made In Detroit Items and Im not even from Detroit. But I know when I buy an item through Made IN Detroit that the money goes to good use! Im PROUD of Bobby for standing up for Detroit and his company. Detroit unfort has a bad name and Bobby is improving the name of Detroit for the whole U.S. Ain't No Old Bitty gonna change that for true KId Rock fans. A huge THANK YOU goes out to you Bobby! Stand Strong In The Storms Of Life
Kimber_4's picture

Kid Rock should walk through his home town with his head held high, he does a lot for his community and much for the communities of others. Kudos!
Kimber_4's picture

Plus Susan Tompor looks like a really unhappy gal anyway...ahahahahah!
Rndiver67's picture

I wonder how many people are wearing their Made In Detroit clothing today in support? I am proudly wearing mine! Keep up the awesome work Kid!

Right on Kid, this woman doesn't know shit! I stand behind you100%. You really do CARE about America. I saw you at Saltair and you are the very BEST!!!!!

I am posting this comment on my wife's facebook. I can't believe that Kid Rock is being criticized for "paying it forward". I am a proud husband and father of eight children. I am a longtime fan of Kid Rock and have purchased numerous concert tickets/merchandise. What Bobby is doing in the Detroit area is amazing. He also just finished a tour that was done entirely to help charities across the country. If I had a business that could give all profits to charity after payroll and manufacturing costs were met, I would try to keep costs of manufacturing as low as possible to be able to give as much as I could. How anyone can be criticized for giving to heltp others is beyond me. I try to install the values that Kid Rock is showing in my children. I am an electrician in Florida and have been fortunate to have maintained steady work ...in these tough economic times. I don't accept government assistance, I work for everything that we have. To quote from a few songs from the great Kid Rock, "I never asked to much from no one, I was much to proud" and "You get what you put in and people get what they deserve". If more people were as quick on the hip as they are on the lip, things might not be the way they are. Thank you, Bobby! The "least you can do is CARE" and you go above and beyond , you don't just Care, you DO! As a matter of fact, I may live in Florida, but I will be purchasing some Made In Detroit products to give my support and be proud of what it stands for. "Keep on kid Rockin' in the free world"! This Congregation member always will!

So my first thought when I saw the headline was, "Really ?!?!, are you kidding me. I can't believe someone would write an article like this!!" I dismissed it as such BS that I didn't even read it. But, when I saw you had responded, I had to check it out. And, as usual, I thought it was great. Very well put, with an ass kickin' to boot. What the Hell was she thinking? Ok, that was a dumb question because obviously she wasn't. She has to have been living under a rock the last 30 years not to know that the textile industry in this country was shipped over seas and she obviously didn't do very much research on you or your companies. But her biggest mistake was that she has no clue who she's dealing. OMG, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall before you wrote the letter. I'm sure this is the toned down version. Sucks that you have to put up with stuff like this but, keep doin' what you do because your supporters are many and your haters are few. Happy Valentines Day!!! Roses are red, violets are blue. I think I have a crush on you. I've never been impressed by fortune or fame, but I'm drawn to you like a moth to a flame. lol, c u at the next show.
Laurie_58's picture

I hope all these commenters who disparaging Tompor bothered to read her story: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2012202060320 I'm not even sure you did, Kid. She does mention that most clothing is made abroad. She does mention your good works, and the WSU scholarship. )Charity's good. Jobs are better.) But she points out that much of the MID clothing is not made here, and many times the labels don't say where they're made. Go ahead and curse her, or hurl personal insults. But I'd say you're still left with a branding problem.

We got your back Kid!! I am 52 years old and me and my wife and four kids still go together to your shows! I believe in your passion for Detorit. I was born in Detroit in old Delray Hospital which no longer exists. Then lived in River Rouge (tough neighborhood) and then graduated from a high school downriver. We are all about Detroit, and the one thing I know is Detroiter's stick together. I have borught up my three sons and my daughter to stick up for our home town. I have been a long time Lions season ticket holder. And because of that I was given the opportunity to be on the field for the halftime show at last years Thanksgiving Day game when you performed Born Free! I was the one who held the stairs still while you walked upon that small stage. Anyhow, they allowed me to bring one person with me on the field that day and I brought my daughter to the rehersal the day before and of course at the game time show. I can tell you that the smile that came across my daughters face when she saw you up close will be a memory for a proud father forever! I coach high school wrestling and we have a very successfull wrestling program with tough kids. We blast your music everyday at practice! You make us proud dude, and when I go out of town..... I wear my Made In Detroit T-Shirt!!!!

Thank you Kid Rock. Thank you Mike Illitch. Thank you Roger Penske. Thank you Dan Gilbert. Thank you Alan Mulally. Thank you to all the heroes of Detroit. I am proud.

You go Kid Rock, fuck that bitch and the paper she writes for. I wish more people would think and do what your doing. Lets create jobs, clothes, cars everything in the U.S.A.! gee maybe that would get the homeless off the street, feed the poor, create jobs so AMERICANS wouldnt have to worry about losing their home! Now, as you said some things have to be imported, but we dont even rely on ourselves anymore. I am proud of you and the reply you wrote defending yourself, even though you shouldnt have to. If the bitch wouldve done her homework, she never would have wrote in the first place. I think its a shame how hard times have fallen on Detroit, and bless you for what your doing. I also grew up listening to Bob Seger. The only artists I think tell it like it is are: You, Kid Rock, Bob Seger, Springsteen. The true and real americans in this country know what you do for various charities, people, etc. Just keep doin what your doin, keep being the true, honest, and caring person you are. Remember, God does not like ugly and she just made itto the top of His list. Love lisa
Jillebee1's picture

Just cause this lady is ugly and wears glasses does not make her smart...i really cannot stand ignorant people...
kidrocket99's picture

Let's face it, would Kid Rock even give this broad a second glance? Posting her mug shot here is as much attention as she's gonna get...This is as good as it get's for her, so we must feel sorry for her and pray for her, this thing that is lacking attention in her life and needs to get it through slander and ignorance at the expense of a popular Rock star who has a loyal fan base. I say we photo shoppe this picture of her and put a DUNCE CAP on her head and have her sitting in a corner of a 2nd. grade classroom somewhere in the middle of outerspace. If I were Kid Rock that's exactly what I would have done, he explained himself way too much, he shouldn't have had to use his unused energy on her that's for sure. Such a pity. Let's also re-name her "desperatto" just for kicks. Tisk tisk, tisk . I wonder if she even feels emabrrased? I would....Especially with a face like that...I hate to sound rude.

Fuck with a bull ya get the horns. Fuck with KID ROCK ya wish the bull was back. GO FUCK YOUR SELF. u homely ugly ignorant wannabe BITCH! from ARKANSAS!! ALL REAL! Peace to my ROCK peeps.

Dude... I'm so glad you are real. I'm proud to be a fan of Kid Rock! We know what you do and we appreciate what you do. I am glad you ripped her ass. Send me a copy down here to Alabama and we'll use it in the shit house.

I am not from Detroit but from a small town in Virginia. We would love to have someone like you here, someone who is proud of where they are from and supports the people there. The media is out of control, it is all about grabbing headlines and not about objective reporting. Your response was wonderful. Keep Rocking!!!

Susan is a BITCH "just like Monday". She must not have gotten any the weekend before she made these comments. Will someone please place a cock in her mouth so she will shut up. I am proud to say I like Kid Rock and support all his endeavors. I never met a badass like him,, but I sure would like to.
