Susan Tompor: Kid Rock's clothing line says 'Made in Detroit' -- but isn't

    Dear Susan Tompor,

Let me first start off by cordially inviting you to go fuck yourself. I have always said that I do care what people in my hometown think of me, and the hatchet job you have just written about The Made In Detroit company in The Detroit Free Press has made me so upset that I am left with no choice but to defend myself and my company. I purchased MID out of bankruptcy and asked a friend of mine (Tom Dubak) to give up the security of a good paying job at a car dealership for a chance to help revitalize this brand. The goal of MID is to re-instill a sense of Detroit pride, give back to the community, try to create jobs in our home state and maybe one day build our own facility somewhere close to the riverfront in Detroit. We have succeeded in most of the this and have big plans for the future, not to mention the scholarship fund we have created at Wayne State, the numerous sponsorships we do every year and the hundreds of thousands of dollars we have given to local charities (all of which somehow had no place in your attempt to slander us in your article).

You failed to say that the majority of our products are in fact MADE IN AMERICA. Let me address the small number of MID products not made in America, which were explained to you, but that you felt unimportant to print as part of a well-balanced and fair story. You didn’t care about printing the fact that 98 percent of all clothing sold in America is not made in America. It’s very difficult to even find quality and affordable USA made products, lord knows we have been looking from day one, not only for the MID brand but also for the Kid Rock merchandise we sell on tour. A simple phone call to my KR merchandise company FEA or calls to our suppliers or any other clothing company in America would have told you this. The majority of the clothes that are made in America still import the cottons and other parts needed to make these items from outside of the country.

In addition, we have NEVER laid claim to our items actually being made in Detroit, it’s been on our website since we took the company out of bankruptcy what we are about –

Made In Detroit has created jobs for people in and around Detroit, we’ve made money for local merchants and donated money to many local charities on behalf of MID, Badass Beer and The Kid Rock Foundation along with creating 7 jobs at MID alone. As the owner of Made In Detroit I’ve never taken a dime of salary or profit or even expensed a meal. We, like most brands in America, use some products that are not created in America. That doesn’t mean we can’t do better. We’re trying to move away from those products while still keeping our prices affordable and keeping us and the stores that depend on us in business. You will find a list of things we have done with MID below in which we are extremely proud and because of these and the many other things I have been able to do I walk around my hometown with my head held high. You and your editors ought to be ashamed of yourselves for not only entirely missing the point of what we do but trying to knock down MID, myself and other local brands that have done nothing more than try to prop our city and state up.

I’ll finish by saying that as a result of your article and the lack of respect from not only you but from your editors, The Detroit Free press is on my shit list and my subscription has been canceled. And yes, I will go so far as to ask other like minded folks to do the same if they are tired of garbage, irresponsible reporting like yours.

If there is one thing I have learned from growing up in and around Detroit it’s “Don’t take any shit from no one and be proud of where you come from!” I am. FUCK YOU.

And to the bloggers and press, if you choose to only print part of my statement, please give a link to my website or make my whole statement available on yours.

    Sincerely,
    Kid Rock

Keep your head held high Kid Rock! Fuck all the haters. What you do is amazing and there are very few musicians left these days who are as real and as authentic as you are! The Detroit Free Press is just another example of an ignorant press company who doesn't know shit about journalism. Their faulty publications will come and bite them hard in the ass one day. Bobby, I admire how you stand up for yourself and do not care what a single person thinks of you. So susan, GO FUCK YOURSELF!

After reading the comments on the Detroit Free Press article, I have some thoughts. Evidently, If you aren't dirt poor and from the hood, you arent allowed to represent the "D" Evidently, If you go out of your way to support your hometown and state and donate millions to the less fortunate, You are just trying to impress fellow rappers..... (really?) Evidently, If you are an ignorant tool that allowed his company to go down the tubes and Kid Rock buys it, You are allowed to run your mouth off and slander anyone you want. Evidently, If you are a celebrity that owns a company that uses bulk product from overseas, you deserve to be tarred and feathered. Look Out Bill Gates and every other company in the USA.... Its a damn good thing Kid Rock is a good guy. If I were him, I would pack up and move to a state that would appreciate me. He wont because he loves his state and the people there... DEAR SUSAN WITH THE DETROIT FREE PRESS I HAVE TO WONDER WHO THE HELL YOU WERE TRYING TO IMPRESS SEEMS YOU LEFT OUT A BIG PART OF THE STORY IN YOUR QUEST FOR LITERARY GLORY iTS THAT KIND OF JOURNALISM THAT DESTROYS OUR TRUST THAT MAKES US LOOK AT THE MEDIA WITH DISGUST iF YOU CAN CRUCIFY A PHILANTHROPIST LIKE KID ROCK YOU DONT DESERVE A MEDIUM IN WHICH TO TALK MADE IN DETROIT IS ABOUT PRIDE IN YOUR CITY STANZLERS COMPANY IS SAD AND SHITTY STAND UP DETROIT BEHIND THE MAN THAT CARES CONSIDER ALL THE PROFITS THAT HE SHARES DO NOT GIVE THE DETROIT FREE PRESS A FREE PASS TELL THEM TO KISS YOUR ASS ANGEL

Let me start by saying what a GREAT beginning paragraph. I agree she can go fuck herself. She's just pissed because she can't fit into any of your clothes so she is a hater. I think because she is an idiot us fans ought to be able to dress the bitch the way we would like. I don't know about anyone else but i her comments might prompt me not to purchase any more MID items, uhmm therefore i don't know a slanderous suit maybe? Let it ROLL!!

I just wanted to " Thank You" for all the great things you do for the city..No matter what you do in life there are always "HATERS" that will try to bring you down...Keep up all your good work and God Bless.... Rock On Sexxy...
KID ROCK'n GRANNY's picture

You got it right in the first sentence of your reply! I love you Kid Rock, you say it the way it should be said!
Cindy_139's picture

MR KID ROCK! I have always loved your music admired how you generously gave of yourself to our troops.....But (maybe because I am not from Detroit)...was not aware of your Made in Detroit Company or your other long list of interests, investment, and the TRUE LOVE you have showered on your home town!!! Although it was this editors intention to tear you down....the joke apparently on her. She gave you the opportunity to not just expose her ignorance and lack of integrity....but to also update us outsiders on the charities and many selfless things you do! Your mission statement is very moving and I believe your efforts honor it! With that, I think I will download a Kid Rock Album and buy a tee shirt. God Bless America, Detroit and you, Kid Rock! You inspire me! Respectfully, Cindy from Pittsburgh (A Mom,Business Owner and a Kid Rock Fan :-))
Memphis LadyRock Madonna's picture

Besides its the Logo that states Made In Detroit meaning the one wearing it...not the tag in the back....All the shirt says is Proud to be from Detroit...Ms. Tompur must be bored, too

Ms Tompor, Don't bite the hand that feeds you. The blood you see may be your own. Rock On Bobby!!! She's probably gone into hiding by now. Love you forever :-)
ChippewaPrincess's picture

Lets All STOP typing this poor excuse for a human being's name and not give her any more glory by using her name in these posts. what a way to get Kid Rocks attention, he literally has to say her name over and over wow. what people will do these days..
chickadee's picture

Check out the comments on the freep website regarding that article. Robert Stanzler and his crackhead girlfriend seem to think the rest of us are uneducated buffoons. Just remember Stanzler, you only drop the Kid's name to stay relevant. Suck on that!!

Mr. Ritchie does not mince words or avoid personal accountability, but through his tireless efforts of this past year alone, he did pass his bucks on to Detroit and to all the communities in which he played. I’ve researched and gathered enough evidence to see the largesse of his heart and his determination as a philanthropist and multiple small businesses owner to build up our citizenry. I encourage you to utilize your voice as one that is intelligent, objective, edifying, and filled with the same grace you have been given. Cordially, Anna M. Storkson, J.D.

To be fair, I posted this on DFP's website, too. Last time I visit there. (My apologies for having to post this in two parts) As a well-travelled and educated woman who is relocating - with Detroit being one of only three locations in the nation I will choose - thank you for your quite poorly researched and slanted drivel of a fluff piece you portrayed as journalism when you wrote your article on Made in Detroit. I now know where not to look for fair and balanced journalism. I am a staunch supporter of our country, what it stands for, and our Constitutional right to free speech. I taught many youth - now in America’s workforce - public speaking and Communication Law; however, you were obviously not one of my students. I worked hard to edify each of my students and give them important skills to navigate through life in whatever they chose to do after graduating with their university degree. Most importantly, I strove to spark their desire to continue to research and learn for the rest of their lives and to think for themselves. If you were writing about Mr. Ritchie to cash in on his fame to sell your newspaper, shame on you, your editor, and the Detroit Free Press for doing it in such a way as to tear down instead of build up your neighbor. If you care so much about what is Made in America, you could turn your attention to another Michigan “celebrity” who utilizes off-shore accounts and blind trusts to avoid personal accountability and pass the buck onto the hard working backs of countless many in this nation. You could interview me based upon my lifetime personal experience with the gaping maw of “safety net” holes that exist. I’m hanging by a frayed thread, but it is my spirit, determination, and love for me and “my neighbors” that keep me going. Blind trust? I once had that as well, but now I see.

Maybe you can mark the ones that are made in the USA on the website, Bob? That should set peoples mind at ease when buying. I have to admit (SO very sorry :/ ), I was glad to see your response to that article. She had me all broken hearted at first, because I worship the ground you walk on, but I too, try to buy American when ever possible, and deeply believe we have to, if we want to save our country. But after reading your response, I feel much better and look forward to my next purchase & seeing what you have planned for MID! Keep doing what you do! We know you truly care ? ps... 75 more days & we'll be back on the BOAT Mother Fucker!! ;-)
