Susan Tompor: Kid Rock's clothing line says 'Made in Detroit' -- but isn't

    Dear Susan Tompor,

Let me first start off by cordially inviting you to go fuck yourself. I have always said that I do care what people in my hometown think of me, and the hatchet job you have just written about The Made In Detroit company in The Detroit Free Press has made me so upset that I am left with no choice but to defend myself and my company. I purchased MID out of bankruptcy and asked a friend of mine (Tom Dubak) to give up the security of a good paying job at a car dealership for a chance to help revitalize this brand. The goal of MID is to re-instill a sense of Detroit pride, give back to the community, try to create jobs in our home state and maybe one day build our own facility somewhere close to the riverfront in Detroit. We have succeeded in most of the this and have big plans for the future, not to mention the scholarship fund we have created at Wayne State, the numerous sponsorships we do every year and the hundreds of thousands of dollars we have given to local charities (all of which somehow had no place in your attempt to slander us in your article).

You failed to say that the majority of our products are in fact MADE IN AMERICA. Let me address the small number of MID products not made in America, which were explained to you, but that you felt unimportant to print as part of a well-balanced and fair story. You didn’t care about printing the fact that 98 percent of all clothing sold in America is not made in America. It’s very difficult to even find quality and affordable USA made products, lord knows we have been looking from day one, not only for the MID brand but also for the Kid Rock merchandise we sell on tour. A simple phone call to my KR merchandise company FEA or calls to our suppliers or any other clothing company in America would have told you this. The majority of the clothes that are made in America still import the cottons and other parts needed to make these items from outside of the country.

In addition, we have NEVER laid claim to our items actually being made in Detroit, it’s been on our website since we took the company out of bankruptcy what we are about –

Made In Detroit has created jobs for people in and around Detroit, we’ve made money for local merchants and donated money to many local charities on behalf of MID, Badass Beer and The Kid Rock Foundation along with creating 7 jobs at MID alone. As the owner of Made In Detroit I’ve never taken a dime of salary or profit or even expensed a meal. We, like most brands in America, use some products that are not created in America. That doesn’t mean we can’t do better. We’re trying to move away from those products while still keeping our prices affordable and keeping us and the stores that depend on us in business. You will find a list of things we have done with MID below in which we are extremely proud and because of these and the many other things I have been able to do I walk around my hometown with my head held high. You and your editors ought to be ashamed of yourselves for not only entirely missing the point of what we do but trying to knock down MID, myself and other local brands that have done nothing more than try to prop our city and state up.

I’ll finish by saying that as a result of your article and the lack of respect from not only you but from your editors, The Detroit Free press is on my shit list and my subscription has been canceled. And yes, I will go so far as to ask other like minded folks to do the same if they are tired of garbage, irresponsible reporting like yours.

If there is one thing I have learned from growing up in and around Detroit it’s “Don’t take any shit from no one and be proud of where you come from!” I am. FUCK YOU.

And to the bloggers and press, if you choose to only print part of my statement, please give a link to my website or make my whole statement available on yours.

    Sincerely,
    Kid Rock

AND...adding to my prior comment. Did anyone even know the MID name, label, shirt, merchandise etc. prior to Kid ever getting a hold of it?! I would say the answer to that would be NO! I know that I started buying my Made In Detroit t-shirts when I realized that Kid Rock bought the company (not knowing it was bought out of bankruptcy) just knowing that this guy had such passion for a city (or state) that he grew up in & wanted to promote it even more then how he had been in the past. He is the voice for Detroit & for the state of Michigan.....did she watch the Born Free video? Filmed in Northern Michigan...as is most of Kid Rock's videos filmed in and around Detroit. Ms. Tompor clearly missed the point of these t-shirts (and merchandise), what they stand for and promote! She needs to get a clue, do her homework a little more diligently and understand that you, Kid Rock, did this for the City of Detroit & for Michigan. Where this MID Brand is being Manufactured at the moment, has nothing to do with what these t-shirts STAND FOR! They care about Michigan & Detroit and where the people are proudly from....not where these t-shirts are made! She needs to get a clue!! (I had never looked at the label in any of my MID shirts to see where they were made). Shame on the DFP too!

What the HELL was she/the Detroit Free Press thinking? And didn;t ANYONE bother to check out her info? Seems not, they only wanted press time and to get it SO WRONG!!! My family has MID shirts along w/Kid Rock's touring items. Thanks to Bobby, people are working, people are buying the items and not but not least---he is helping people out w/his donations!!!! So, maybe you & the Free Press don't like what he's doing? Is that why you all got the story so screwed up? Next time, get your facts right (hopefully, you won't get a next time). I will continue to buy MID and support Bobby where I can. Bobby, your truths speak volume's!!!!!

I just wanted to add something more to this discussion , a friend just emailed me a list of charties that take our donations and recieve huge paychecks. American Red Cross and UNIEF among them. Why Miss Tompor does not go after them is beyond me.Bobby does not take a salary or an expense account where is that in your article? So much for fair reporting. I also wanted to suggest that maybe you should invest in a good shower head , then maybe you would not have such a sour look on your face.

Way to emphasize and communicate your honorable actions. Your sincere loyalty to be giving many provision’s of help is outstanding and easily visible. You’re a real devoted human. Proud to be a resident of Michigan Robert Ritchie.

I am not going to say anything about this little known and apparently person of little knowledge of what she has decided to write about. I will say that I am the wife of a Union Skilled Trades worker, I am 60 years old, I have MANY MID shirts, glasses, lighters. Kid Rock has made kids dreams come true he has bought musical instruments for school bands and never wanted it to be a big deal. He has given and supported Detroit and it's suburbs more than any other entertainer from this area as far as I know. I will not purchase DFP OR DN until something is done about this article I hope they do something quick before that paper has to pink slip for lack of sales!!Thank you Kid Rock for all of your generosity and Love for this City that I have always lived in! Your MID shirts are on everyone I know Florida, Maryland, Arizonia,California, Kentucky, even Alaska. And there was a guy (our Porter) on the ship to Alaska that liked my husbands shirt so much we washed it and gave it to him! You deserve the Respect,Love, and loyalty from this City! IProudly Wear my MID Shirts and I even realize that I am making a statement that I was Made in Detroit!!

Not only a musical genius, but an unselfish, giving, loving, charitable man and being bashed like this. Only a headline grabbing bitch would trash a man trying to help his city by CHOICE! Rock did'nt have to take up these GREAT charities. He did it out of the kindness of his heart.Hats off,Rock. Did'nt think u could get any better. I guess i was wrong. Just found out u had seger on piano on ,Hell yeah! Back in the 70's he came to Columbus where my Dad was in a Motorcycle club called the Avengers and Seger came there and did'nt leave 4 2 days! Mention this to him and I guarantee he'll smile. ahhh, good ol days.

I owe you a sincere apology...I was probably one of the 1st to write here & ask why MID isn't made here! This morning, Fox 2 news put it in perspective for me, clothes just aren't made in U.S.A. I ran my big mouth before I really thought about it :( I am truly sorry, I will continue to buy MID products & I wear them proudly :) I AM & ALWAYS been behind the work you do...keep up the good work Bob, we are ALL proud of you :) :)

Why is it, that anytime someone tries to do something good it gets picked and pecked apart? No wonder people don't attempt to go out of there way to make changes, don't be discouraged by what others have to say... I would much rather have a piece of the pie than none at all?? Every journey, starts with the first step...I'm glad that u have enough faith & wisdom to attempt to rebuild on something u believe in and eventually make it a 100% real! No good deed goes unpunished. AMG Xoo Keep on strutting :)

that cunt needs to be fired, she is not a reporter-she's a troublemaker, reporters report everything on a matter and researches in depthly,if she really wanted to report on made in america products, then she should go back to wal-mart (which the ole man open the stores on the fact that proucts sold in his store were made in america)-until his son took over, also the bitchn needs to go back to the clinton adminstation where they open free trade which caused the demise of our manufactoring jobs-sounds like u (kid rock) has been singled out-i appauld you for telling her to fuck off -good for you!!!lov u-she

And for the record, I have a Made in Detroit gear sticker in the back window of my 2011 FORD Focus. They pulled themselves up despite huge odds against them. Detroit will also.
William LaLonde's picture

All I ever see is Eminem being shoved down our throats as a representative of Detroit. Can you name one charity or organization that he has helped. Don't say Chrysler, he got paid for that i am sure. Robert Richie has done more for this cities image than the cities administration ever has. I am ashamed of any reporter that would try to tear down anyone that is sending a positive message about Detroit during these difficult times. What ever possessed the editors to print this slander. Do you want to see our city in ruins? I am hoping to see a full apology to Mr. Ritchie very soon. I am hoping the press doesn't just focus on the language he used in his response. I my opinion he was as nice as he could be under the circumstances. Shame on everyone involved with that article. You are not Detroiters.

YAY Bob!!!

I will continue to proudly wear my MID shirts and support your efforts to bring work and goodwill to the city of Detroit!

Man fuck that BITCH. Someone needs to put a boot in her face, no wait it looks like somebody already did....As I sit here in my MID shirt, (which EVERYONE in my family including my grandkids got for Christmas this year and we will keep supporting) or my 10 others, or any of my KID ROCK concert shirts, I wouldn't offer one to her if she needed a torniquit. Same broad who would be on her knees to get an interview if you were holding a press conference, or making a major announcement. I too just cancelled my DFP subscription, I wouldn't even put it down for my pup to shit on its not good enough, but I will take the pic of this ugly cunt and tag it on my hay bale and use it for target practice. How dare she, or how dare they? They should've fired her for even considering putting a story like this out. It's not even about what you did for Detroit, and many other cities/states, or people, its what you do ALL THE TIME FOR ANYONE because thats the kind of person you are. Thank You for all that you do for DETROIT. WE THANK YOU AND WE LOVE YOU BROTHER!!!!!!!

Ms. Tompor, For many years Detroit has been beaten up by the national media, between Coleman Young, the downturn of the automotive companies and Kawami Kilpatrick . Now, you and your editor decide to take a pot shot at one of the biggest advocates and ambassadors Detroit has. What the F---. Its people like you , misinformed and ignorant of what Kid rock does for this area, that gives the national media more fire power to laugh at Detroit. If you really want to find trash and print it. Try politics!! You know my father always said, “If you don’t have anything nice to say about someone, then don’t say anything” I know your paper has been lagging in sales, Now I see why. Try building up Detroit instead of tearing it down for Christ sake. Kid Rock, keep rocking . Lots of love for my brother

Dear Ms. Tompor, Since you’re probably reading the comments on this website, I’m going to defend you because I understand. I understand that in no way, could you have possibly anticipated the publicity shit-storm that has surrounded your story. If you had, I have every confidence that your story wouldn’t have been so poorly constructed and boring. Just remember dear, it’s the “Pulitzer Prize” not the “Pull-it Surprise.” I understand and it’s ok. You’re part of a media machine whose astounding lack of accountability ranks its value somewhere between a carnival barker and a bucket of hair. It takes a lot of hard work to get an in depth piece of quality journalism published and I think we should celebrate when you finally do. I understand that recycling is so good for the environment so I especially appreciate that you recycled a story that was first reported on by Jessica Nunez back in 2009. http://www.mlive.com/business/detroit/index.ssf/2009/08/kid_rocks_made_in_detroit_clot.html Finally-I understand that Made in Detroit isn’t totally made in Detroit in much the same way I understand that the Detroit Free Press really isn’t free. I investigated it and found out that it costs $20 per month for 7 editions. Hang in there Ms. Tompor- I just know you’ll do better next time. Sincerely, Syd

I support Kid Rock, Made in Detroit & any of Kid Rock's other company's 100%... People dont buy MID products because they think they are made in Detroit.. they buy them for the brand.. its an attitude.. a lifestyle... That lady can stick her article up her ass where she pulled it out of. Bobby youll always have my support.. no matter what kind of bullshit these haters want to try to pull.. We as true fans, see the good you have done for your people. We see the heart you have put into the work you have done.

You brought a company not only out of bankruptcy, but you put Detroit City Back on the Map :) These t-shirts and the MID brand were made to be worn with Pride for a city that has struggled for years. I don't think the thought at the time when you saved this clothing line, was thinking about where they were being made. Look at this woman, would she ever get that? She should, she's writing an article for the very place in which she lives! I wear my MID t-shirts with not only pride for Detroit but with pride for Michigan and where I was born and raised. I don't live in Mi right now, but everyone knows I was born and raised in the D or close! I LOVE going home. I wore one of my many MID t-shirts to your show at the Wharf Amphitheater this past Nov. Front Row! So good seeing you! Keep up what your doing for the City of Detroit and for Michigan!! Side note....Madonna who? Now she wants to claim she's from Detroit, not happening!!! Can't stand her! Hope to see ya soon. Colleen

Bobby, you have so many supporters, yes this Bitch, is an ASS!, but you are an Ambassador who the hell is she? NO ONE!, we SUPPORT and LOVE YOU for what you do and how proud you are to do it! there's always someone out there who has to spoil it, no matter how pathetic it is, and for the Free press to print it, what a slap in the face to you, my mom told me this the other night, I couldn't believe it, never fails. I hope she fades off into never never land, but shes got her minute of fame, and I got a feeling she's one hated woman today in michigan. I support you ALL the way here on the west coast, and just how do I do that ???? I PROUDLY sell your MADE IN DETROIT CLOTHING in California, and LAS VEGAS, because I believe in what you are doing and fully support your efforts. nite y'all

I support Rock 100% whether it be his clothing line or music, I just love his attitude and his generosity not only to the people of Detroit but to America as a whole. This reporter should have done ALOT more research before opening her mouth. Shes a bitch to some it up nicely in my opinion. Hats off to you Rock and thank you for giving back as much as you do and not wanting your "name in lights" for it so to speak like so many others in the public eye who do. A true Kid Rock fan knows that what you do and say is from the heart and there's nothing fake about it, and I think thats one of the many things that makes you stand out, and you stand out very well! Lookin forward to the new album! ~ Meghan ~

Way to go Bobby! You think you won that round with Tompor. Detroit & the suburbs love you. Keep up the good charity work you do. You're a good man. I thought the article was poorly written for someone who calls herself an award winning journalist. It was so far off the mark for being fair and balanced which a good journalist would do. Tompor is so concerned with the fact the MID merchandise is not made in Detroit. Does she not realize the Detroit Free Press is not made in Detroit? It's printed in Sterling Heights. I cancelled the Detroit Free Press when the put Charlie Sheen on the front cover of a Friday edition. That Friday, the Detroit Pistons had retired Rodman's number and that should have been on the front page. After reading Tompor's article there is no way in hell I will every get the Detroit Free Press. The Detroit Free Press is not even worthy of lining the bottom of my parrots' cages. You go Kid! FTB! Oh and read bluesuedeshoes comment under starting a discussion. That person wins the comments in my opinion even though it was not about the cigar. I have never laughed so hard. I really needed that. Maybe the dumb bitch who wrote the article joined the fan club under a different name. Too funny! You have to read it. I'm still laughing.
