Susan Tompor: Kid Rock's clothing line says 'Made in Detroit' -- but isn't

    Dear Susan Tompor,

Let me first start off by cordially inviting you to go fuck yourself. I have always said that I do care what people in my hometown think of me, and the hatchet job you have just written about The Made In Detroit company in The Detroit Free Press has made me so upset that I am left with no choice but to defend myself and my company. I purchased MID out of bankruptcy and asked a friend of mine (Tom Dubak) to give up the security of a good paying job at a car dealership for a chance to help revitalize this brand. The goal of MID is to re-instill a sense of Detroit pride, give back to the community, try to create jobs in our home state and maybe one day build our own facility somewhere close to the riverfront in Detroit. We have succeeded in most of the this and have big plans for the future, not to mention the scholarship fund we have created at Wayne State, the numerous sponsorships we do every year and the hundreds of thousands of dollars we have given to local charities (all of which somehow had no place in your attempt to slander us in your article).

You failed to say that the majority of our products are in fact MADE IN AMERICA. Let me address the small number of MID products not made in America, which were explained to you, but that you felt unimportant to print as part of a well-balanced and fair story. You didn’t care about printing the fact that 98 percent of all clothing sold in America is not made in America. It’s very difficult to even find quality and affordable USA made products, lord knows we have been looking from day one, not only for the MID brand but also for the Kid Rock merchandise we sell on tour. A simple phone call to my KR merchandise company FEA or calls to our suppliers or any other clothing company in America would have told you this. The majority of the clothes that are made in America still import the cottons and other parts needed to make these items from outside of the country.

In addition, we have NEVER laid claim to our items actually being made in Detroit, it’s been on our website since we took the company out of bankruptcy what we are about –

Made In Detroit has created jobs for people in and around Detroit, we’ve made money for local merchants and donated money to many local charities on behalf of MID, Badass Beer and The Kid Rock Foundation along with creating 7 jobs at MID alone. As the owner of Made In Detroit I’ve never taken a dime of salary or profit or even expensed a meal. We, like most brands in America, use some products that are not created in America. That doesn’t mean we can’t do better. We’re trying to move away from those products while still keeping our prices affordable and keeping us and the stores that depend on us in business. You will find a list of things we have done with MID below in which we are extremely proud and because of these and the many other things I have been able to do I walk around my hometown with my head held high. You and your editors ought to be ashamed of yourselves for not only entirely missing the point of what we do but trying to knock down MID, myself and other local brands that have done nothing more than try to prop our city and state up.

I’ll finish by saying that as a result of your article and the lack of respect from not only you but from your editors, The Detroit Free press is on my shit list and my subscription has been canceled. And yes, I will go so far as to ask other like minded folks to do the same if they are tired of garbage, irresponsible reporting like yours.

If there is one thing I have learned from growing up in and around Detroit it’s “Don’t take any shit from no one and be proud of where you come from!” I am. FUCK YOU.

And to the bloggers and press, if you choose to only print part of my statement, please give a link to my website or make my whole statement available on yours.

    Sincerely,
    Kid Rock

What a malicious woman!! Kid Rock should continue doing what his doing to help his community and there is no need to justify this to someone so ugly inside and out!! True fans dismiss people like her and CONTINUE TO SUPPORT MID and KID ROCK!!!!! The world needs more givers like KId Rock around and less people like Susan Tompor talking!!

If this writer cared 1/100th about her chosen profession she wouldn't have gone for the cheap shot. If the DFP cared about quality journalism they wouldn't have printed this piece of crap. If the masses don't support Made in Detroit then they don't care about Detroit history and the pride that still drives the heartbeat of growing up and living in Michigan. You can't change the world over night but the least you can do is CARE! By the way I haven't bought an addition of the FREEP in years, but I have bought MID products and will continue to give them as gifts. Thanks Kid Rock for chosing a path and staying on it!!!

Perfect slap down to a bored rude wanna be writer

Man fuck that BITCH. As I sit here in my MID shirt, or my 10 others, or any of my KID ROCK concert shirts, I wouldn't offer one to her if she needed a tourniquit. Same broad who would be on her knees to get an interview if you were holding a press conference, or major announcement. I too just cancelled my DFP subscription, I wouldn't even put it down for my pup to shit on its not good enough, but I will take the pic of this ugly cunt and tag it on my hay bale and use it for target practice. How dare she? It ain't even about what you did for Detroit, and many other cities/states, or people, its what you do ALL THE TIME FOR ANYONE because thats the kind of person you are. Thank You for all that you do for DETROIT. WE THANK YOU AND WE LOVE YOU BROTHER!!!!!!!

Give'em Hell Bob!!!! BTW.. I'm from NC and I have a few MID shirts and I WILL be purchasing more!!!

Wow, way to slap down Susan Tompor for her petty semantics. Why would someone criticize an organization like MID that donates so much money to charity each year…unless perhaps she didn't do her research?

Jesus H Christ. If I looked like that beast I would probably be a cranky, mean-spirited bitch and all around ass-wipe. See has to take it out on someone. As Drew & Mike would say: "What a friggin M-O-N-S-T-E-R". Keep up the great work for Detroit Kid.

WOW Susan. REALLY? We LOVE the Made in Detroit brand. Kid Rock and the Made in Detroit brand are an inspiration to all in Michigan. I honestly don't think I've ever heard anybody have anything negative to say about "The Kid" except Susan Tompor. We even sported the MID brand in one of our Youtube rock videos we made just about this time last year. Copy and paste in the Youtube search engine "Alexis and Grandpa cover Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar" to see us having fun rockin' out wearing Kid Rock Made in Detroit brand.

What bug crawled up DFP’s ass to be slaying you this way of recent, Mr. Ritchie? Un-fucking believable!!!!!! Have they no shame? Have they absolutely no integrity and therefore must maliciously rip at yours? Thank you for bringing this to the attention of your fans, especially those who don’t (fortunately) subscribe to the DFP and now would not do so under any conditions (including looking at it online). Your response was very well written and articulate. Bravo!!!!! I’ve been doing the research and independent thinking, and no matter what others - including this uninformed woman – say you are the most honest, stand up man I have ever had the honor to support. Your tireless, tremendous efforts help such a wide range of people. Your painstaking efforts help to build up humanity instead of tearing it down. Your efforts are noble and are good deeds done in a weary world. I am not a sycophant, but even if others think I am because of my defense of you and your integrity, then I am happy and proud to be Miss-Understood. Keep your head held high, Mr. Ritchie!!!

Mr. Bobby, This is my 20th year of owning my apparel business. I thought I'd seen or heard it all until I saw your post about the write up. The Made in Detroit brand to me, symbolizes the hard work of the people who build, manufacturer or make products in the Detroit area. It’s a symbol of PRIDE of Detroit. You’ve done a great job of keeping the PRIDE of the workers in Detroit. In fact that PRIDE is reaching all over Michigan with the MID apparel. Detroit and the state need goodness and pride. In the times we are in now, we need all the positivity we can get! Thank you for that!!! Your heart is right Mr. Bobby, I admire you for caring, for your music, for saving companies, for creating jobs and for having faith in your town. Don’t let anyone take that away from you.

We choose our battles in life and I'm so glad you chose to fight this one. Having said that, my heart is broken that you of all people find yourself having to defend who you are and what you stand for. It makes me very sad that this is a story coming out of Detroit; the city you love so much and have given back to over and over. It sounds cliche but this woman should be ashamed of herself . This was not fair and honest journalism. All the positive things you do and this is what she has chosen to focus on. You are a very special person. You have an amazing heart and generous spirit. The love you have for, and the loyalty you have to this great state of Michigan is apparent, admirable and genuine. Also, the fact that you are always so proud to be an AMERICAN does not go unnoticed by your true fans. I'm sorry that you're going through this. I could go on and on but will end it by saying I love you Kid Rock. I'm always proud to be your fan...always will be. xoxo

Well another black blemish on our local newspapers, I have not bought paper in years I'm glad I stuck to that, SCABS never change. I wonder how much money these so called papers have handed out to the needy families of Metro Detroit,I myself received a gift card from Meijers 2 years ago donated from Mr.Kid Rock aka (Bobbie) through WRIF our local Rock station. The kid has giving so much to Metro Detroit over the years and he asked nothing in return. So 1 pathetic reporter decides to attack one of our only local hero's that never forgot where he started and she wants to attack his business. Well I say BOYCOTT these local papers and maybe when their down and out perhaps Bobbie will throw them a bone. Mr. Rock keep rocking ,SHIT I SAY KID ROCK FOR SENATOR BECAUSE OUR's SUCK!( SHIT WHY STOP THERE KID ROCK FOR PRESIDENT:) YOU CAN ALWAYS TELL WHEN PEOPLE HAVE MONEY OR POWER BECAUSE THEY FORGET ABOUT US SINGLE PARENTS TRYING TO WORK and feed our kids in what USED TO BE THE GREAT STATE OF MICHIGAN UNTIL THESE IDIOTS IN LANSING THINK THEY KNOW WHAT AVERAGE FAMILIES WANT & NEED TO SURVIVE! SO HELL WITH THE HATERS BOBBIE KEEP ROCKING WE ALL LOVE YOU!

The last time I checked, cotton is not grown in Detroit. Therefore if Susan thinks that cotton MID t-shirts should be made in Detroit, then she should take a history lesson of Michigan crops. When is something truly MADE HERE? Is it when it grows here, or when it’s produced here or simply assembled here? For those who criticize retailers with clothing made elsewhere, please remove your clothing and tell me where it’s from. I’m sure that you are wearing stuff that’s not made in the USA. (Sometimes people need to look at themselves before they attack others). I am a clothing designer and own a clothing company. I am passionate about keeping my designs made in the USA, but I still have to use some that aren’t because it’s hard to find the fabrics and infinite options here at the present time. I hope we can manufacturer more here, but it will take more American’s buying American made clothing in order for this to occur. I have been doing a lot of research and am finding more clothing manufacturers in America (thanks to Diane Sawyer and ABC News for their Made in America segments). I applaud Kid Rock for having most of the MID line American made and for giving so much to charity. I guarantee these charities are extremely happy to receive these contributions from his company. I only hope that the slanderous article helps sell more clothing so those charities can benefit from this generous benefactor. I also noted that Susan headlined the article: Kid Rock’s clothing line says ‘Made in Detroit’—but isn’t. If she’s implying that his business name is incongruent, then shouldn’t The Detroit Free Press be FREE?

CONTINUED am your man. As far as the trash talkers, they obviously dont understnd what happens when a company is pulled out of bankrupcy. It takes time to revitalize a buisness. If he says it is on the up and up and jobs are being created and scholarships and donations being made to benefit the town....what is the problem. get a grip and find something worth while to bitch about...... Peace Shane

first off let me start by saying I am only 13 and have been singing ur songs since I was little. I was only 6 when you came to lowell ma and mom wouldnt let me go to the concert. I am waiting for you to come back... as for your clothing line, I am a model and if you need someone to model your line, I

The media has the capability of turning any of us into a "serial killer." They have no integrity and just want to write some bullshit. Way to go Kid Rock, great response to all this stuff. You make a real difference. Keep up the good work no matter what they say.

Excellent rebuttal statement! I will not be visiting freep.com anymore and just made another MID purchase to show my support.
