Susan Tompor: Kid Rock's clothing line says 'Made in Detroit' -- but isn't

    Dear Susan Tompor,

Let me first start off by cordially inviting you to go fuck yourself. I have always said that I do care what people in my hometown think of me, and the hatchet job you have just written about The Made In Detroit company in The Detroit Free Press has made me so upset that I am left with no choice but to defend myself and my company. I purchased MID out of bankruptcy and asked a friend of mine (Tom Dubak) to give up the security of a good paying job at a car dealership for a chance to help revitalize this brand. The goal of MID is to re-instill a sense of Detroit pride, give back to the community, try to create jobs in our home state and maybe one day build our own facility somewhere close to the riverfront in Detroit. We have succeeded in most of the this and have big plans for the future, not to mention the scholarship fund we have created at Wayne State, the numerous sponsorships we do every year and the hundreds of thousands of dollars we have given to local charities (all of which somehow had no place in your attempt to slander us in your article).

You failed to say that the majority of our products are in fact MADE IN AMERICA. Let me address the small number of MID products not made in America, which were explained to you, but that you felt unimportant to print as part of a well-balanced and fair story. You didn’t care about printing the fact that 98 percent of all clothing sold in America is not made in America. It’s very difficult to even find quality and affordable USA made products, lord knows we have been looking from day one, not only for the MID brand but also for the Kid Rock merchandise we sell on tour. A simple phone call to my KR merchandise company FEA or calls to our suppliers or any other clothing company in America would have told you this. The majority of the clothes that are made in America still import the cottons and other parts needed to make these items from outside of the country.

In addition, we have NEVER laid claim to our items actually being made in Detroit, it’s been on our website since we took the company out of bankruptcy what we are about –

Made In Detroit has created jobs for people in and around Detroit, we’ve made money for local merchants and donated money to many local charities on behalf of MID, Badass Beer and The Kid Rock Foundation along with creating 7 jobs at MID alone. As the owner of Made In Detroit I’ve never taken a dime of salary or profit or even expensed a meal. We, like most brands in America, use some products that are not created in America. That doesn’t mean we can’t do better. We’re trying to move away from those products while still keeping our prices affordable and keeping us and the stores that depend on us in business. You will find a list of things we have done with MID below in which we are extremely proud and because of these and the many other things I have been able to do I walk around my hometown with my head held high. You and your editors ought to be ashamed of yourselves for not only entirely missing the point of what we do but trying to knock down MID, myself and other local brands that have done nothing more than try to prop our city and state up.

I’ll finish by saying that as a result of your article and the lack of respect from not only you but from your editors, The Detroit Free press is on my shit list and my subscription has been canceled. And yes, I will go so far as to ask other like minded folks to do the same if they are tired of garbage, irresponsible reporting like yours.

If there is one thing I have learned from growing up in and around Detroit it’s “Don’t take any shit from no one and be proud of where you come from!” I am. FUCK YOU.

And to the bloggers and press, if you choose to only print part of my statement, please give a link to my website or make my whole statement available on yours.

    Sincerely,
    Kid Rock

GREAT comeback, I am proud to say I'm from Detroit!!
tracy_78's picture

Ok Remind me never to piss you off lol, and if i had a subscription it would be canceled. It is a shame that she took only a certain part of what is not made in America and focused on that and not what is made in America and the good the company has done for the city
KSB's picture

Way to put that ugly bitch in her place. What does she do for others? I'm sure nothing compared to you. Nothing like the media....just ask Hank.
YourBethness's picture

Why they chose to write a story on this I'll never know. There are so many more pressing issues at hand in the country - GEEZ! These days "journalism" is about picking everyone apart to the 'enth' degree and sensationalistic bullshit. If more folks focused on the positive - the world would be a different place. F'annoying! No matter - your fans, and your CITY are behind you.

Nice comeback Bob. It's a shame what the world is coming to these days. If only the haters would shut the FU for even a minute, the world would be a better place. Remember, people who can, DO, and people who can't, BITCH!

Cancelled my subscription too! I never liked her articles anyways!

Bob....I think what you do and everything you do for your hometown, elsewhere and for your oganizations is outstanding. This woman appears to not have much to report on so instead has singled you out. For what reason I don't know. She obviously hasn't done her research well. Maybe that's why she doesn't have real stories to report on. She's not a good reporter. HAH!!!
dkirsch's picture

Well said! And thanks for setting the record straight. We are huge supporters of the MID clothing line, and will continue to be!
JenH415's picture

P.S. The media skews everything wherever you are.... for whatever their agenda is. It's unreal!!!!!! I cancelled my newspaper a long time ago...assholes! ;-)
JenH415's picture

YES...FUCK the BITCH & the newspaper! You're a hero & you make a difference that is positive. This lady is miserable and unhappy. She wants to be a whistle blower and be negative about something amazing???!!!... Sucks for her! Glad I'm not her! Glad none of us are! Thank God! God Bless Kid Rock!
Sean Mooer's picture

Its funny how our own media likes to bash Detroit and pose a negative impression of our city! And as always.. not only in Detroit but all over the country... the media makes biased, non-researched statements and tries to make anyone trying to make a difference look bad. This reporter needs to go suck the air out of michael moore's bunghole.
Andrew Peabody's picture

when i first saw the free press article i thought, " what the fuck!?!?". why is this crazy bitch going out of her way to slam one of the biggest detroit boosters on the planet? thanks for the solid comeback, kid. as a detroiter in exile, i still have rock n roll in my soul and the motor city in my heart. rock on, brother, and kick out the jams!
JT66's picture

Kid, as you can see here you've got an army behind you. Rock on

Susan Tompor is simply demonstrating the fact that Detroiters eat their own, which is a good part of the reason the city is in the shape it's in today. There's very little togetherness there. Most every person in the Detroit Metro Area exists soley to bring the other down, not raise them up. It's sickening. Glad to see one person, Kid Rock, stands up and tries to help his fellow Detroiter.
Garold Amadon's picture

Huh, well I have my 'Made in Detroit' stainless steel plaques mounted proudly on my Work Truck, one on each side, that I will be 'wearing' proudly in Massachusetts soon, and they were laser cut here in the Detroit area! I am proud of Kid Rock for making a stand, and his energy in support is essential to any part of a positive movement to growing a new Detroit. I am sad to leave at this time but I have family to care for, or I would be one to bark up a Detroit tree in favor of a positive out come to the revamping the historic treasure of Detroit! Detroit and her energy saved me in 1983, as a street musician at San Antoine and Monroe on the corner of Greektown! I won't forget Detroit!! Thanks Kid Rock! ps.... and I bought them at the infamous RoadShow on Gratiot! Dec. 2009 ...yah!!!
Anita_7's picture

Perfectly worded and yes, shame on them. Proud of you!

Talk about a homely bitch with nothing better to do. Susan Tompor and the Freep/News team suck, as do the assholes at Fox 2 news for irresponsibly broadcasting the "story" as well. What a bunch of douchebags. Maybe someone should send the skank to a good salon so her hair would look at least as good as the ballfro on my sack, or better yet, the cornrows on my asscrack!

The story and your rebuttal are clear examples of why you can completely sell out venues and people like Susan Tompor cannot. Those in the Detroit area appreciate your support of our local communities and the fact that you have stayed loyal to Michigan. Your legacy will be well remembered, while Susan's article will line a bird cage.

Dear Bobby: AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. This is one of the many, many reasons I love you and what you do not only for us fans but for your hometown and America in general. Stand up for yourself and your rights and you do it so very well! Props to you for sitting down and writing that rebuttal! I, for one, have ordered many things from MID not only because of your endorsement but because I feel I'm making a difference in helping Detroit and its people. I have never even been to Detroit, but nevertheless, I believe everyone deserves a fighting chance. You help those people and many many others. I am proud to wear MID and Proud to be a KID ROCK FAN from day one! Keep up the great work!!! I know you're around this area today and if I were to run into you (say at the square grouper tonight or even Rachel's) I'd like to give you a gigantic hug - that's all, just a hug to say THANK YOU AND I RESPECT YOU! If I must wait until April, however, I will - have a great day and can't wait to cruise with you in April!!!! Much love to you and yours!

Great response to a piece of crap article. Just one of the many reasons I admire you KR...Keep up the good work you do for so many...

To Susan Tompor: Please look up 'reporter' in that dusty and neglected book on your shelf call a 'dictionary' and you'll find that the stories you're supposed to print are... brace yourself... 'facts!' Go figure. Rather than use the Detroit Free Press to print what amounts to your own personal opinion maybe you ought to do what they pay you for and research your topic before you submit it. Remember 'research?'. You'll see an example of it below in case you forgot. How about if I share [my] opinion with the world, Susan? Feel free to print it since opinions are hot items and undeniably true (yes, that's 'sarcasm'. Bonus points if you look that one up too). You should be ashamed of yourself and you should be fired. Journalism - especially in an industry struggling as much as printed media is - should be hypersensitive to situations exactly like this. The organization you disparaged is clearly attempting to encourage awareness in the city of Detroit and the fact that Kid Rock is not being paid for his involvement is a testament to his good will. Face reality - even if absolutely [no] MID products were truly manufactured in Detroit and the organization was not headquartered in Detroit, the label alone brings awareness to a city that is in mortal danger of failing. Aeropostale apparel is made in Europe, Asia and Central America. Not France. There. Research compliments of Google. Considering I recently read about a Detroit city council meeting regarding the emergency management crisis falling apart because there weren't enough council members interested in attending the meeting, I don't see a lot of Detroit pride by elected officials, yet Kid Rock is still willing to invest in Detroit. At the very least, you must publish an apology and admit that you were wrong. You wield a powerful weapon in a pen, use it wisely in the future. Eat crow or take up Kid Rock's cordial invitation. Your choice.
