Susan Tompor: Kid Rock's clothing line says 'Made in Detroit' -- but isn't

    Dear Susan Tompor,

Let me first start off by cordially inviting you to go fuck yourself. I have always said that I do care what people in my hometown think of me, and the hatchet job you have just written about The Made In Detroit company in The Detroit Free Press has made me so upset that I am left with no choice but to defend myself and my company. I purchased MID out of bankruptcy and asked a friend of mine (Tom Dubak) to give up the security of a good paying job at a car dealership for a chance to help revitalize this brand. The goal of MID is to re-instill a sense of Detroit pride, give back to the community, try to create jobs in our home state and maybe one day build our own facility somewhere close to the riverfront in Detroit. We have succeeded in most of the this and have big plans for the future, not to mention the scholarship fund we have created at Wayne State, the numerous sponsorships we do every year and the hundreds of thousands of dollars we have given to local charities (all of which somehow had no place in your attempt to slander us in your article).

You failed to say that the majority of our products are in fact MADE IN AMERICA. Let me address the small number of MID products not made in America, which were explained to you, but that you felt unimportant to print as part of a well-balanced and fair story. You didn’t care about printing the fact that 98 percent of all clothing sold in America is not made in America. It’s very difficult to even find quality and affordable USA made products, lord knows we have been looking from day one, not only for the MID brand but also for the Kid Rock merchandise we sell on tour. A simple phone call to my KR merchandise company FEA or calls to our suppliers or any other clothing company in America would have told you this. The majority of the clothes that are made in America still import the cottons and other parts needed to make these items from outside of the country.

In addition, we have NEVER laid claim to our items actually being made in Detroit, it’s been on our website since we took the company out of bankruptcy what we are about –

Made In Detroit has created jobs for people in and around Detroit, we’ve made money for local merchants and donated money to many local charities on behalf of MID, Badass Beer and The Kid Rock Foundation along with creating 7 jobs at MID alone. As the owner of Made In Detroit I’ve never taken a dime of salary or profit or even expensed a meal. We, like most brands in America, use some products that are not created in America. That doesn’t mean we can’t do better. We’re trying to move away from those products while still keeping our prices affordable and keeping us and the stores that depend on us in business. You will find a list of things we have done with MID below in which we are extremely proud and because of these and the many other things I have been able to do I walk around my hometown with my head held high. You and your editors ought to be ashamed of yourselves for not only entirely missing the point of what we do but trying to knock down MID, myself and other local brands that have done nothing more than try to prop our city and state up.

I’ll finish by saying that as a result of your article and the lack of respect from not only you but from your editors, The Detroit Free press is on my shit list and my subscription has been canceled. And yes, I will go so far as to ask other like minded folks to do the same if they are tired of garbage, irresponsible reporting like yours.

If there is one thing I have learned from growing up in and around Detroit it’s “Don’t take any shit from no one and be proud of where you come from!” I am. FUCK YOU.

And to the bloggers and press, if you choose to only print part of my statement, please give a link to my website or make my whole statement available on yours.

    Sincerely,
    Kid Rock

Go Bob! I completely understand how you feel, I to own a small retail store in Texas, While we try to purchase and support Texas businesses. It is completely impossible to stand by USA only products and survive the competive retail market. This is what sucks about people writing a onesided atricle like this. The guy that imports the t-shirt pays taxes, the guy that works on the loading dock pays taxes, the guy driving the truck to deliver the shirts pays taxes and so on! So I agree with you screw them if they can be supportive in a struggling ecomomy sent there ass to China and see how good they really have it in the good ol USA!!!

Great response! Love MID! Thank you for all that you do for Michigan! My 2 year old ROCKS his MID t-shirt!! PS: I have never subscribed to the Detroit Free Press or Detroit News ever since the strike. Too many of my family members were screwed by that. This article just confirms that there is NO reason to ever subscribe to them again.

Well said!! I own several MID items and I live in Kentucky, and I will contuine to buy!!

"Made In Detroit" doesn't mean it was actually made in Detroit any more than "an album of Kid Rock's music" means that there is actually any music that would qualify as listenable on the album.

*°*? For everything you do,your charities, the jobs you created donations, all that you have given~*°*? God bless you~*°*? @ Sharmie said it,us Canadian think your AMAZING!!!...

You go Bob! I love that you stood up to an article that doesn't show both sides. Everyone is quick to point fingers without getting the whole story. Especially when it comes to you. I'll continue to buy Made in Detroit products. Susan Tompor forgets to mention the people the company employs are in Michigan and as you pointed out the great amount of money that is given to charity by Made in Detroit. I wear my Made in Detroit merchandise proudly.

Your Canadian fans think you are AMAZING !!! way to kick some ass!! I wish we had a canadian rock star that gave back to us the way that you do to America. Your biggest fan Lisa Vertz has gone to at least 15 of you concerts and she says they are amazing She is the one who told me of all your donations and great things you do for your country and that is why i think you are an amazingly great man . Keep up the good work! love you KId Rock

Just sent Ms. Tompor a little good morning email. I am posting it for you below. Ms. Tompor. I hope you read Kid's reponse to your article, if not you can find it on his webpage (http://www.kidrock.com/news/600863-susan-tompor-kid-rocks-clothing-line-says-made-in-detroit-but-isnt/#). I would like to say that I personally found your article completely disheartening and I think you missed the point entirely. Made in Detroit isn't about where the clothes are made, it's about an attitude and a pride and about bringing that pride back to the state of Michigan. I was born and raised in Lansing and now live out of state but when I go back I see nothing but depression and lost jobs and a sad state. The auto industry has left many with out jobs my family and a lot of other families out of work. Kid has given Michigan a reason to be proud a reason for hope and a reason to rise up and get back on their feet. It's not just a tee-shirt or a jacket it's about people and being proud of where you came from. Before you look at him and make a judgement I think you really should have done your homework, you'd have found one of the most caring, hardworking and loyal people out there. Most people grow up in Michigan, make some money and leave it behind, not him, he wears it proudly and not only walks the walk but talks the talk. You have done a great disservice to not only Detroit but Michigan with your article. Tracy North Carolina resident, Michigan girl forever!!

Bobby Baby, You never cease to amuse the living shit out of me. What a tasteful, perfectly worded response. Go get em' P.S. If they don't like MID they can suck my dick!

"we have NEVER laid claim to our items actually being made in Detroit" The company's name is "Made in Detroit." You do understand that people would expect that a company called "Made in Detroit" would make things in Detroit, right?
KJ_5's picture

Thank you, Kid. For all you do and for all the BS you have put up with to do it. Keep on Rockin'!

You have such a huge heart and give SO much back, not only to your community, but people in need all over the country. Shame on this staunchy bitch. I think I will mosey over to the MID site and do some shopping :)

Amen Kid, you are a True Detroit / Michigan Warrior. I wear my Made In Detroit proud and always get compliments when out of State. I operate Handbags of Hope a Macomb county charity, I hope to work with your foundation soon.
Honey_MnM's picture

"but wez ain't got no cotton fieldz in detroit Mz Tompor" It NEVER crossed my mind that the material was actually "spun" here! I took it for what it was...designed and printed here. However, because of your ignorance to portray a negative half truth about a man and a company striving to bring Detroit Back, I now realize how much of the money goes to charities....boosting my buying desire for MID products!!
rlfchigao10's picture

Just seeing that headline I thought how fucking stupid can you be.Bobby anyone that knows you, knows you are a great man and a true American. I always appreciate the fact that at every concert of yours YOU always thank us for spending our hard earned money to see you..YOU always thank the men and woman of the military for protecting our great country..and YOU always display the American Flag proudly over your stage.I respect the fact that you want to defend yourself, however anyone that knows your character sees right through that bullshit.I wear my Made in Detroit hat proudly knowing where it comes from and where it is going. So to that woman that I won't even name you said it best GO FUCK YOURSELF!!

I really like that Kid hammered the editors at FREEP. What about Chrysler and how it has taken its jobs and manufacturing out of Detroit and now advertises imported from Detroit?

January 25th we held a Made in Detroit fashion show as a fundraiser for Jo Brighton Special Olympic Athletes. It was a huge success, the only thing missing was Kid Rock. We raised 7,000.00 for our Special Needs Kids to participate in Special Olympics. I would love to share our video of the event with you, you would be touched and proud. We had a nice article in News Herald Paper. We have nothing but positive things to say about Made in Detroit, keep up the good work and ingnore the negative nay sayers. My fiance's email address is spluchino@prodigy.net. http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thenewsherald.com%2Farticles%2F2012%2F01%2F25%2Fentertainment%2Fdoc4f185427ab378362530436.txt&h=bAQGaPl7O

Well said! I say everyone boycott the paper! If we don't stand up to these people they will just keep writing all the one sided bullshit!!

AMEN Bobby!!! Thank YOU for taking the time out of YOUR busy days to help out this great state of Michigan! I've lived here my whole life too (45 years now ) and appreciate everything you do to try and help out our great state ! xoxo

Have not subscribed to the paper in a long time and find most press to be biased and sensationalize. Proud to wear MID. Proud to be a Kid Rock fan. Thanks for speaking up.
