Susan Tompor: Kid Rock's clothing line says 'Made in Detroit' -- but isn't

    Dear Susan Tompor,

Let me first start off by cordially inviting you to go fuck yourself. I have always said that I do care what people in my hometown think of me, and the hatchet job you have just written about The Made In Detroit company in The Detroit Free Press has made me so upset that I am left with no choice but to defend myself and my company. I purchased MID out of bankruptcy and asked a friend of mine (Tom Dubak) to give up the security of a good paying job at a car dealership for a chance to help revitalize this brand. The goal of MID is to re-instill a sense of Detroit pride, give back to the community, try to create jobs in our home state and maybe one day build our own facility somewhere close to the riverfront in Detroit. We have succeeded in most of the this and have big plans for the future, not to mention the scholarship fund we have created at Wayne State, the numerous sponsorships we do every year and the hundreds of thousands of dollars we have given to local charities (all of which somehow had no place in your attempt to slander us in your article).

You failed to say that the majority of our products are in fact MADE IN AMERICA. Let me address the small number of MID products not made in America, which were explained to you, but that you felt unimportant to print as part of a well-balanced and fair story. You didn’t care about printing the fact that 98 percent of all clothing sold in America is not made in America. It’s very difficult to even find quality and affordable USA made products, lord knows we have been looking from day one, not only for the MID brand but also for the Kid Rock merchandise we sell on tour. A simple phone call to my KR merchandise company FEA or calls to our suppliers or any other clothing company in America would have told you this. The majority of the clothes that are made in America still import the cottons and other parts needed to make these items from outside of the country.

In addition, we have NEVER laid claim to our items actually being made in Detroit, it’s been on our website since we took the company out of bankruptcy what we are about –

Made In Detroit has created jobs for people in and around Detroit, we’ve made money for local merchants and donated money to many local charities on behalf of MID, Badass Beer and The Kid Rock Foundation along with creating 7 jobs at MID alone. As the owner of Made In Detroit I’ve never taken a dime of salary or profit or even expensed a meal. We, like most brands in America, use some products that are not created in America. That doesn’t mean we can’t do better. We’re trying to move away from those products while still keeping our prices affordable and keeping us and the stores that depend on us in business. You will find a list of things we have done with MID below in which we are extremely proud and because of these and the many other things I have been able to do I walk around my hometown with my head held high. You and your editors ought to be ashamed of yourselves for not only entirely missing the point of what we do but trying to knock down MID, myself and other local brands that have done nothing more than try to prop our city and state up.

I’ll finish by saying that as a result of your article and the lack of respect from not only you but from your editors, The Detroit Free press is on my shit list and my subscription has been canceled. And yes, I will go so far as to ask other like minded folks to do the same if they are tired of garbage, irresponsible reporting like yours.

If there is one thing I have learned from growing up in and around Detroit it’s “Don’t take any shit from no one and be proud of where you come from!” I am. FUCK YOU.

And to the bloggers and press, if you choose to only print part of my statement, please give a link to my website or make my whole statement available on yours.

    Sincerely,
    Kid Rock

You go Kid! The nerve of people being able to write such bullshit! I put up with slander regularly from bad tenants and owners too! Just like you I put my heart and soul into my career and work to help others. I am a believer that people that blog about others in negative ways to hurt them really have no life. This woman should be ashamsed of herself for writing something so horrible without doing her research and finding the truth. I commend you for being the honest hard working dedicated generous man you are and hey your music ROCKS :)

I noticed Tara Grant's children are recipients. I think it's been five years. That is really sweet. God Bless ya.

Good job Kid! Just because its free press and the written word is in black and white does not mean its factual. Providing jobs, donations, businesses, and all that you do to help give back to your community, city, state, and ultimately the economy. You provide an example we should all emulate on all levels, no matter what our incomes, either monetary, time, food, helping with shelters, ect. Keep up the good work! It's not always easy, but, always gives much satisfaction.

Canceling our subscription as I type, for not portraying the whole picture (which seems to be the case for most "hype" stories by Ms. Tompor & degrading your support). Want to thank you for your support of the city and the community in general.

To Kid Rock - I was going to send you a private message when I went to your concert and bought a t-shirt that said "Made in Detroit" and it wasn't and ask why but thought about how much you care about Detroit and promote it just by having :"Made in Detroit" on every shirt, how you promote Michigan tourism with the Pure Michigan campaign which basically introduced your wonderful music and talent to me. I didn't read her article and don't know what was said but I see how hard you work, how you give to communities, not just here in Michigan - you just did a whole tour.Your concert is the best concert I have ever been to and I am old (in age). Thanks for sharing all this information. You are truly an incredible talent and a really good person and like your song says, "You Care."

I say Bravo to you for Defending yourself and MID! I received my Latest ORDER YESTERDAY and wore IT PROUDLY TODAY! If she wasn't going to get the facts and print a decent story.. she should NOT have printed it at all! I would like to see her run a company, any company, and do the EXTRAORDINARY things YOU have DONE! Not just for DETROIT, but for AMERICA! I was at the Nashville concerts and know what you donated for the Nashville area! I will continue to drive anywhere I can to see a KID ROCK CONCERT! I will continue to purchase MID merchandise as well as KID ROCK & BADASS BEER merchandise! I wil gladly pass along the FUCK YOU SUSAN TOMPOR STORY! Keep up the good work Bobby!

Made In Detroit shirts look GOOD no matter what state you were born in! We wear them proudly in SOUTHERN ILLINOIS! Keep up the good work!

I emailed her the following... Dear Ms. Tompor, In regards to your article on MID, shame on you and your slanted article on Kid Rock and the good he’s trying to do. I fear you’ve fallen into the same old bitty tactics that the rest of America’s Media has succumbed to. My darling Grandmother did it but people such as yourself shouldn’t. What exactly am I referring to? Malicious intent, that my Grandma called gossip, when others were doing it. You are in a position to bring a lot of good but you’ve cheapened yourself and your paper by going for the ‘National Enquirer’ attention grabbing headline which is lazy and biased at best. I suspect you have much more talent than you are using. Sure you can use the angle you have, but should you? Robin

WOW! She's as scary looking as she sounds! \m/ Right On Kid!
Pimp Potsie's picture

Hell yeah! Love my MID clothes and hats, wear them with pride. I am in the process of cancelling my Free Press subscription now. Kudos to Kid Rock for calling out the one sided reporting that is unfortunately not that uncommon by all media outlets.
j31stu's picture

Like the shirts alot, as long as it is made in USA it is fine with me (but it would be cooler if they were made in Michigan).
Mary_90's picture

I must admit, I am not a fan of the genre of music you produce. But I commend you on all you have done for Detroit. It is reprehensible for a reporter to misrepresent a company that goes above and beyond for a city in which she works in the state she obviously lives in. Way to go whatever her name is.........she deserves her own wall of shame. I have a new found respect for Kid Rock. Go Kid!!
just1girl's picture

I live in California but the way Kid Rock 'Cares' is the same way all of us do regardless of what state we are from. Bob, I listen to Born Free all the time on my mp3 player & that gives me the opportunity to tell as many people as I can that you give back to Detroit & cities around this country more than any other "celebrity" I have heard of. Why doesn't the media pick that info up & roll with it?? What is Ms. Tompor's problem anyway? Lying by omission is still a lie. She lied to the world about you & I hope she loses her job!!
Kassrock's picture

The first thing I heard about this was "oh yeah your boy Kid Rock's "Made In Detroit" is really not made in Detroit! To which I answered.."Ok, so you tell me what is made not only in Detroit..but actually made in the US free and clear?" You know what this is about?..It's about haters...they just can not stand someone doing good..and even more..they can't stand someone doing good for their community. Just because we aren't from Detroit doesn't mean we shouldn't support them..We are the USA..right? RIGHT!!!

(Cover your ears Mom) Fuck Susan Tompor, and her ignorant, antagonistic diatribe. Her lack of regard for responsible journalism and the subject being covered makes me violently ill. It reminds me of the same pathetic BS spewed forth by the foreign owned auto parts manufacturers that I was laid off from more than a year ago. Lets not forget to notice the stench of government style propaganda woven into its words. In this country 2+2 still = 4 - not 4.1 or .762. MID adds up perfectly for Detroit and for the America we are going to take back from these kind of hate mongers. As for Susan Tompor, take your 'much less than American' attitude somewhere else - and take the Detriot Free Press editors with you. You go Kid - make that MID factory happen - We, the American workers, have your back~!!

I knew you would fire back! I've been waiting....that article really pissed me off and to see other apparel companies re-post it on facebook! That really pissed me off too. I sell your MID and I am very proud to sell it and defend you on this when I hear people commenting in my store! I'm so glad you educated the public b/c a lot of them need it! Can't people see through the trash some of these papers put out? Apparently, not! Well said, Bobby! We love you, honestly, I only hear people say how much they like you. Of course, they may be afraid to say anything else when they are in my store!

Nuff said keep it real. Love you Bobby!

Love everything you've done for Detroit and the state of MI! You're a good soul and your fans appreciate all the good that you do. Irresponsible reporting by a moron who obviously doesn't realize how well loved and respected you are in your hometown! I admire your blunt way of defending yourself and setting the record straight. Rock on!
Mir4126's picture

Amen (pun intended) The sad thing is that we rely so heavily on news outlets to bring us a fair, honest depiction of current matters but so often what we get is slanted bullshit. Is it ironic that MID is not in fact MID? Maybe. However MID is a BRAND not a proclamation made by the company regarding its physical manufacturing location. Anyone with their head even partially out of their ass is aware of that. Pretty shitty that the Free Press is calling out a business thats continued to succeed and maintain a presence when so many others are shutting their doors. I think the most obvious appeal of MID is that just the brand name itself manages to evoke a sense of community proving that this story could have easily had a positive spin. I guess some simply like to make something out of nothing.

I am tired of the media creating shit just to get their rocks off. This was a bad peice of journalism but what is even worse is when music and sports "journalists" rip athletes and musicians a new asshole all the while having zero talent in either field... Ms. Tompor probably was wearing foreign made clothes when she wrote the article and drove home in her foreign car ( I am not talking Porsche here)....fuckin hypocrite!!!
Jason Greif's picture

Personally I think she has no room to talk until she owns a clothing company, a brewery & tours around the world. All three of which requires hiring employees therefor until shes helped the local economy half as much as you have I'm hopping onto the Fuck You band wagon she can hand make your t-shirts until some quality ones are made in the USA.
