Susan Tompor: Kid Rock's clothing line says 'Made in Detroit' -- but isn't

    Dear Susan Tompor,

Let me first start off by cordially inviting you to go fuck yourself. I have always said that I do care what people in my hometown think of me, and the hatchet job you have just written about The Made In Detroit company in The Detroit Free Press has made me so upset that I am left with no choice but to defend myself and my company. I purchased MID out of bankruptcy and asked a friend of mine (Tom Dubak) to give up the security of a good paying job at a car dealership for a chance to help revitalize this brand. The goal of MID is to re-instill a sense of Detroit pride, give back to the community, try to create jobs in our home state and maybe one day build our own facility somewhere close to the riverfront in Detroit. We have succeeded in most of the this and have big plans for the future, not to mention the scholarship fund we have created at Wayne State, the numerous sponsorships we do every year and the hundreds of thousands of dollars we have given to local charities (all of which somehow had no place in your attempt to slander us in your article).

You failed to say that the majority of our products are in fact MADE IN AMERICA. Let me address the small number of MID products not made in America, which were explained to you, but that you felt unimportant to print as part of a well-balanced and fair story. You didn’t care about printing the fact that 98 percent of all clothing sold in America is not made in America. It’s very difficult to even find quality and affordable USA made products, lord knows we have been looking from day one, not only for the MID brand but also for the Kid Rock merchandise we sell on tour. A simple phone call to my KR merchandise company FEA or calls to our suppliers or any other clothing company in America would have told you this. The majority of the clothes that are made in America still import the cottons and other parts needed to make these items from outside of the country.

In addition, we have NEVER laid claim to our items actually being made in Detroit, it’s been on our website since we took the company out of bankruptcy what we are about –

Made In Detroit has created jobs for people in and around Detroit, we’ve made money for local merchants and donated money to many local charities on behalf of MID, Badass Beer and The Kid Rock Foundation along with creating 7 jobs at MID alone. As the owner of Made In Detroit I’ve never taken a dime of salary or profit or even expensed a meal. We, like most brands in America, use some products that are not created in America. That doesn’t mean we can’t do better. We’re trying to move away from those products while still keeping our prices affordable and keeping us and the stores that depend on us in business. You will find a list of things we have done with MID below in which we are extremely proud and because of these and the many other things I have been able to do I walk around my hometown with my head held high. You and your editors ought to be ashamed of yourselves for not only entirely missing the point of what we do but trying to knock down MID, myself and other local brands that have done nothing more than try to prop our city and state up.

I’ll finish by saying that as a result of your article and the lack of respect from not only you but from your editors, The Detroit Free press is on my shit list and my subscription has been canceled. And yes, I will go so far as to ask other like minded folks to do the same if they are tired of garbage, irresponsible reporting like yours.

If there is one thing I have learned from growing up in and around Detroit it’s “Don’t take any shit from no one and be proud of where you come from!” I am. FUCK YOU.

And to the bloggers and press, if you choose to only print part of my statement, please give a link to my website or make my whole statement available on yours.

    Sincerely,
    Kid Rock

Well said. Reporters often put their slant on the story to get the headline they want, leaving out important details that need to be heard.

As always, I am proud to be a Kid Rock fan.

Did she believe my "Made in Nashville" shirt purchased from MID was made in Nashville? It never occurred to me where it was made...only why it was made. That woman is an idiot...

yea ! Fuck this bitch ....oh wait.. she ain't worth of fuck.. for real !!

Glad to see you take a stand and put Ms Tompor back in her place. KR, I don't live in Detroit Michigan, but if I did I would also cancel my subscription to The Detroit Free Press and tell them to stick it up their ass... Ms.Susan Tompor, might want to get the entire story straight before she wants to trash you .. God Bless, and stay safe...

Way to take on irresponsible reporting. Not to worry Bobby, those of us who love you, your music and your contribution to humanity will not be fazed. Love MID clothes and all you stand for. You're a good soul..namaste

If I wear a shirt that says Made In Colorado.. It doesnt mean the shirt was made in colorado. IT MEANS I WAS>>>> Stupid bitch

Thank you for all you give back to our community, it's refreshing to see people still care. Her article was reprehensible and I am tired of the "Freeps" shoddy work. Making Detroit a better place doesn't start or end with smear campaigns, she ought to feel deep shame. I raise my glass to you for all you do, it does not go unnoticed. I buy MID products for myself and for friends and family country and worldwide. I wear them with pride, so do they. I have a fierce love of Detroit, it's people and it's culture. Cheers to you for calling a spade a spade.

I ran a multi-million dollar company in New Orleans and would love to pack up and move to Clarkston and donate all my time to help with all the great things you do. Even cook everyday and feed the hungry people of Detroit. Just throw it at me and it would be done. Some people can only see the Kid Rock persona, they need to look deeper and see you are just an awesome man trying to make a difference and you worked your ass off to be in this position. Everyone should "CARE" the way you do. Don't let the negative get to you, keep up the good work. Love your letter to MISS SUSAN :). Thanks for all you do , you are a blessing to many.

Sorrry you had to suffer this injustice. The people of Detroit and burbs love you and appreciate that you do what you can to lift us up. As a realtor in metro detroit for the last 20+ years...I appreciate that you remain a citizen and property owner in Detroit area and stay true and devoted to your roots!! This bitch doesnt deserve your time Kid... we know you love your home!!

So proud to have you in Detroit! Way to stand up! God bless!!

Well said Bobby. Guess she didn't know about your CARE tour either. Nice reporting. Yeah, The Free Press is on my list of what not to get too!! Rock on and see you in April on the boat, if not sooner.

Well stated!! One of the things I always admired about you is your dedication and contribution to this great city. You, like myself, take alot of pride in being from and growing up here. When so many are constantly putting us down, it's awesome to see someone so hell bent on bringing us back up. Thank you for all you do and frankly I'm shocked that anyone would think otherwise. MADE IN DETROIT!!!

Reporters love to hear themselves just talk,...Thank you for standing up for yourself, I really hated this story in the news. Melissa

You do many good things Kid and I know that the state of Detroit is proud to have you in their state. Again, you do a great job standing up for what you believe in and as an American I am grateful for all you do to support the American economy. You are loved and appreciated by many as an entertainer, businessman, giving citizen, friend, and supportive American. Thank you for all that you do and God Bless You!

Keep up the great work and the support you and Made in Detroit provide to not only your hometown but to all the other areas you travel. I attended your Buffalo Care tour, where you donated even more money to needed organizations. I live just across the border in Canada and respect all you do for your hometown. Be proud of where your from and do what you can for others....If someone as something negative to say....well u said it best at the start of your letter!
Loriloveskid's picture

You tell her Kid, that is a total disgrace on her part. You have gone above and beyond hundreds of times over to help people not only in your home town, your state and your country and this is what you get?? I believe you know what you do does not ever go unnoticed by the majority of people, not that you even want recognition, but dont let people like that get to you!!! You are AWESOME and God knows that and so do we!!!!! Keep up your good work, as always!!! You ROCK!!
Laura_99's picture

Hey Bitch Susan.....what he said, lol!!!! I have waited days for your response. I knew you were not the type of man to sit by and not set the record straight. Us true fans can always count on you, and we always have your back!!! See you on the cruise and I will be wearing my MID gear with pride.

EXACTLY- Rock on Kid! She is exactly what continues to tear this country apart....let's pick on Kid Rock a celebrity that is actually attempting to do things with his money and status....because we have nothing else to do. This is why Americans fight with each other and we can't seem to accomplish things in our country- this poor attitude brings us all down. I would challenge her to give me the names of 10, wait 5- other celebrities that are as active and passionate about our country as you are. Shame on her. Keep up the good work Kid! Monica

Awesome job of puttin that Bitch in her place Kid !! Thats why I love ya

Good Job Rock..... The Kid Rock Nation stands behind MID....

Dear Susan, With todays economy in shambles and dismay sweeping across the world...My question to You is this, "Why would you even attempt to shine such a negative Light on MID products!?" This brand is worn with PRIDE! I'm a Michigan girl residing in Florida now, and I ALWAYS represent the 'D'... from my beer koozies to my jackets etc. It must be a Michigan thing... I don't know you, but I do know you just pissed off the Wrong Detroit boy...Good Luck... with.. That !! -Alicia

I wish I could express myself as well as you do in your response to that bull shit article. The Free Press has seriously done you a disservice. They should be ashamed. No more Free Press for me!! I couldn't wait to see what your response was to this whole issue. It may not mean much since you don't know me, but I am proud of you and all that you do. Thank you

Rock on Bobby!! I heard a good one on ABC's show "Shark Tank" a few weeks ago...one of the Sharks told an entrepreneur that "when it comes right down to it we're all immigrants to the USA, so until you can build up your company big enough then you can start producing the products locally"...sooo you can only keep working with what ya can, in the end you're still doing good and giving back so much more to your community and others
