Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked a Kid Rock anthem as his campaign theme song.

Romney, a Detroit native who grew up in southeast Michigan and was the son of former Michigan Gov. George Romney, is using Kid Rock's "Born Free."

Ryan Williams, a Romney campaign spokesman, confirmed the move.

Kid Rock, whose real name is Bob Ritchie, was born in Romeo and has been a supporter of the Republican party and George W. Bush. Kid Rock is a big booster of Michigan and Detroit causes.

He's sold more than 20 million records in the United States.

"Born Free" is the title track off his 2010 album — his sixth platinum record.

"I just started to think about no matter where somebody was born in this world, how lucky you are, just be the grace of God to be born free," Kid Rock told MTV in 2010.

Then-candidate Barack Obama in 2008 also used a song by a Michigan native for his campaign. Obama often used Saginaw-native Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered."

It was performed live on the final night of the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

Pretty decent song, as are many that you perform. Perhaps you just haven't considered the likelihood that the fan base from which you derive your primary support will be unlikely to afford to purchase your CDs or attend your concerts if Mitt Romney becomes the next president. You can't seriously believe that he has in mind the best interests of those of us in working class-less which you appear to revel in being a part of?! Sweet licensing fee and royalties, eh? Just sayin'......

Born Free will be around a lot longer than Mitt Romney. Deep breaths, people, deep breaths.

Yeah Signed Sealed Delivered was used at the National Convention after Obama one. Not for his campain anthem

Listen to your fans please don't let Mitt Romney ruin Born Free. He should use the real National Anthem. And win his votes that way instead of using YOU Robert James Ritchie. It is just wrong in so many ways I thought you CARED about the working class. What does that wall in Detroit mean?????? You are getting used say no to Mitt Romney keep Born Free your anthem.

Woe - that really sounds like the "Don" below :))) My Mom Loves the Don :) She wanted him to run. In regards to the post - WOW WHAT AN HONOR THAT IT BE USED BY A CANDIDATE FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL OFFICE OF THE UNITES STATES OF AMERICA!!! You should be so honored Mr. Bobby... gotta go :)

Please don't let him use your song it means way to much to our military that have and are fighting Bushs WAR. I would have never thought of you as a Republican. I still love you though.

Glad we are born free....!!! :-)

Bob, PLEASE don't let them use your song! It's perfect the way it is and should not be used for partisan purposes. Keep it independent, Kid. Don't let them use it! :(

Kid Rock I love your Born Free song regardless of where it is played!!!!! Just keep on kicking ass!! You are my fav!!!!!

lol another good song choice would have been "Born in the U.S.A." by Bruce Springsteen because we all know President Obama's birth certificates are fake and that he wasn't really born here!

Complete and utter BS. Sorry Bob and crew but this blows. An outstanding song full of American hope, pride and confidence. I won't soon forget your performance of this song at home, here in the D, Ford Field during half-time last year. It somehow felt like it could have been a new American anthem. It will now forever be known and associated with Mitt Romney and his campaign. Never mind any political affiliation, though there are many that will, It stands (imo) as yet one more beautiful "item" or "emotion / expression" of freedom for many taken by the (or in this case, given to) "political machine". I'm really disappointed, it seems you sold out Robert. But then, with roots as "rich kid" Little Bobbie Ritchie from Romeo, despite the effort at "blue collar appearances" I guess it's always about the dollar. Wonder where you head's at on this. I guess "Only God Knows Why"... Disappointed in the D

Awesome song. Glad Romney chose it for his campaign. This song highlights exactly what American stands for "FREEDOM", not socialism like President Obama would like to believe. I hope Mitt Romney becomes President so he can restore American back to its rightful place as "LAND OF THE FREE, HOME OF THE BRAVE".

I think itsvery cool that Mitt Romney, regardless of political views, would chose such a pro-freedom song by a Michigan artist as his theme song. We all know Michigan is in rough shape as is the country. This song sure gave me more "hope" then Obama ever has!!!

I have to comment again. I feel that we as Americans are really narrow minded and totally missing the point. JUST because a man (a beautiful and sexy man :) sings music that you LOVE, rocks the clubs that you attend, and believes in the American working man, does NOT mean that he has to suck up to the party that many celebrities, musicans, and actors feel intimidated into sucking up to. I feel so much more support for Kid than I ever have after reading this, and not just because I am a Republican, but because I am an American (mid west girl) who believes that EVERYONE has the right to choose what political party they stand for without feeling as though they might lose fans. I see a man who has lived fearlessly for the first 40 years of his life and I would be disappointed if he made a decision this late in life based upon whether or not someone might take his Cds off of rotation over a campaign song. His music brings honesty, realism, and contraversy. Why should these qualities stop in his music. I think this is brave way to say, " I love you America, and I stand for what I believe in, without fear of being ridiculed, DO YOU?"

Awesome...also love the Michigan connection! The message fits, Romney wants to use it...more power to him!!! You should consider it a compliment and an honor, all politics aside.

I don't know who I'm going to vote for but I know it WON'T be Obama for the very reasons that Kid sings about. We may have been Born Free but we aren't free in this U.S. the way it's being run now. Go Kid and thanks to Romney for highlighting a great song. Hopefully we'll hear it a lot more now!

I agree with Hometown, I just told my husband that I feel like I just got my music taken away, I have a CD holder that holds 5 CD's in my car it always has 5 Kid Rock CD's in it, everyone always says all you play is Kid Rock I say yep, now I'm not so sure. I went and seen you twice on the "Born Free" tour and have bought a lot of your things on your sites. I love Kid Rock but I remember when he kept his political views to himself, I think that would be better. Let's all hear it for the "Born Free Mitt Romney Campaign Tour"
stephiesweat's picture

Someone, (like me too) is just "sitting in the middle trying to live their life".......... soooo with that being said, I respect Kid for his song being used for the greater good. You don't have to agree with each other's political stance BUT that is what truly being Born Free is. You accept that other people have opinions, beliefs and you work toward achieving your goal in life with those opinions and beliefs supporting your opinions!!!!! This is great news!!!

Obviously musicians have the right, just like everyone else has, to make their own choices regarding religion, politics, etc.. I just wish that their music could remain 'neutral' and above everyday issues for all to enjoy. But, apparently from now on, if we go around singing the words to Born Free we will no longer be singing a wonderful 'Kid Rock" song but, rather, a 'Mitt" campaign song. It will forever have that connection attached to it. KR, why didn't you just write a song for him instead of giving away one that meant a lot to everyone?

NO NO NO A 1%'ER IS AN OUTLAW MOTOR CYCLE CLUB :-) HE MAY BE ALOT OF THINGS BUT I DON'T THINK HE'S GOTTEN THERE YET. WHAT HE IS, IS SUCCESSFUL DUE TO VERY VERY HARD WORK THAT STARTED IN HIS TEEN AGE YEARS. IF ANY OF US WORKED AS HARD AS HE HAS WE' WOULD ALL HAVE WHAT HE GOT. GOOD FOR HIM AND GOD BLESS HIM !!! JM

In a political post, it is OK to talk politics! SHEESH! Keep your song just a kick ass song. Don't connect it to political jerk offs. Repub or Dem, your choice, but don't ruin a song for millions of Americans by giving it to a douche bag... Comments about Tyler on American Idol pale in comparison to letting this douche bag use your song. Bob (may I call you Bob)... you care about the little people, you preach it, you give your time and money towards the less fortunate.. I think this just sucks... never saw this coming... I think I'm gonna throw up.

Im glad to hear a song of worth is being used. Maybe this song will bring some more people around to care. Unfort I dont understand much political stuff but just maybe this song with bring about more CARE.
Shanna_12's picture

Say it ain't so Joe, so sad to hear this but Rock is part of the 1%. Our goverment really doesn't "Care" about the middle class or poor it's all about who has the deepest pocket to contribute to their party. What can this corporation do for ME screw the little people. Doesn't matter if you are a Dem. or Rep. they don't "Care". They retire with great healthcare and most are millioniares. My question is should celebrities endorse politicians what does that do for them? I'll still buy and listen to Kid Rock's music he is my favorite artist after all, we were all "Born Free" and can have an opinion and I voice mine, sorry to sound cynical but our political system sucks and needs work.

@ Qhgypsy- I'm a huge Kid Rock fan for 5-6 yrs now. Some of people commented on here they were upset that Kid Rock could support Mitt Romney. My point is, it doesn't matter to me who he supports... he's a musician, I care about the kind of music he puts out, not who he votes for.
1bbshirlee's picture

That song is gonna get him alot of votes.
qhgypsy's picture

Margo if you don't like Kid then what are you doind on his page? What do you really know about him anyway? He could probably give a fuck if you don't like him! Damn,,,, you just can't fix stupid!

The GOP does not just care about rich folks, They care about less goverment and allowing us working folks to keep more of the money earn and not have to pay more taxes. Let's face it, if we're working we desever more than the folks who won't work. This doesn't count for you folks trying to work but can't find work. But there are alot of dead beats out there. Good for you Bobbie this will give you more national recognition,it's well dserved for all YOUR hard work and your continuing support for Detroit and the state of Michigan. As a Michiganer I'm proud to have you out there. I think it's GREAT!! JM
