    Rebuilding Detroit
    Scott says (02 Aug '11)

I grew up in Detroit; in fact just a couple miles down the road from Mr. Ritchie's home in the Romeo area. Anyway, after a number of years lving in the south I now live in upstate New York and Detroit is just a few hours drive away. I love my hometown and the news of high unemployment and real estate destruction breaks my heart. I'd like to hook up with an organization that's doing something to rebuild the city; building community gardens, repairing neglected buildings, cleaning up empty lots, anything to help. I want to be able to drive out on weekends and volunteer my labor. Does anyone know  of a Detroit born and bred organization they can recommend? I appreciate any referals you pass along to scottswift161@yahoo.com.

    Sincerely,

Wow, I lived on Glastonbury, between Pembroke and St Martins, we used to ride our bikes over the Southfield on the pedestrian bridge. I loved the curved ramp up and down on that ramp. Had the time of my life growing up in Detroit.

@Video our neighborhood was around 7 Mile and the Southfield Fwy. The house I grew up in is in complete shambles. I think you are spot on, the surrounding neighborhoods, all the way to 8 mile need the help. Downtown has had enough attention, time to start on the neighborhoods. Detroit can't survive w/out the suburbs, and the suburbs certainly can't survive without Detroit, same for the rest of the state of Michigan. My Dad had a small but good business in Detroit around Fenkell and Grand River, Basically he sold the place for 1 dollar and got out. The straw that broke his back, was when a tax collector came to collect the 'awning tax' yeah they started taxing awnings over windows. I think Dave Bing's heart is in the right place but he just has no support from the council and a ton of others only interested in their own business.

@KRCVAL, I agree, there seems to be some electricity coming back to Detroit.

@ Scott, there also is Mitch Albom's charity website, he has his own causes, but he lists a ton of other projects. My kids did community service in order to graduate, and he and his friends signed up to get their hours in, it all happened on weekends, and Lo and Behold, my son and his friends were so not happy to give up a weekend for community service but after it was over, they said they had a blast and they actually signed up for more projects. God Bless you.

downtown still has a chance val, but the neighborhoods that surround it are pretty bad. they wont even put grocery stores in the area because of the crime. people have to drive out of their neighborhoods just to shop.
theres a lot of detroit pride going around, but there is so much to do i dont think anybody knows where to start because the problems are so overwhelming.

Several Kid Rock fans started a group to improve Detroit. We wanted to start with cleaning up parks or nhelping the elderly clean up there property and then maybe take on some house renevations. Unfortunately the majority of us are out of state and couldnt be alot of help and it kind of died off.

@ Video, you do have some valid points. JMO but I was downtown for the first time in 7 years, and I think The D actually looks (and acts) a bit better. There are many abandoned bldgs...that would be project # 1 on my list--raze them if they are in such disrepair that renovation/preservation is out of the question (but that costs $--but it would create some temporary work (?).
It's the same ole story in Saginaw and Flint..Detroit's just bigger.

We really appreciate everything here in Michigan. Detroit has had it's share of troubles and with all big cities when they are in trouble it has a snowball effect for the rest of the state. Thank you Scott for caring.

rebuilding detroit is a great idea, but there are things that need to be done first. rebuilding, and bringing money in is not going to revitalize detroit. if people truly want to help detroit, and make it what it used to be they should be concentrating on getting rid of the crime, and filth in the city first. ive actually lived in detroit for most of my life, and saw firsthand how it went from good to bad. not outside of detroit in a neighboring city, but actually in detroit.

dont get me wrong, im proud to be from detroit, but the crime, and filth need to go before people will actually go to detroit for something other than festivals, sporting events, and concerts. the neighborhoods are shit, burned out, and abandoned houses everywhere. the current residents dont give a shit with the exception of a small amount of people still proud to be a detroiter.
