We have been there from "New York's Not My Home" to "The Cramper" and "Devil Without A Cause". We've been around for "Picture" and "Midnight Train To Memphis" to "You've Never Met A Motherf*&er Quite Like Me". We have listened many times to his self titled and one of his best albums "Kid Rock". Hell....... We even sang along with the bandwagon fans when "Rock n Roll Jesus" and "All Summer Long" topped the charts. So why I ask, has Kid Rock seem to have forgotten the ones that have been there from the start? Why did "Born Free" completely leave the tried and true fans in the dust? I don't know........
I bought the new "Born Free" album with much anticipation. I listened to it for about a week strait, tried so hard to love it, and now it sits in a rarely opened case on my passenger side seat of my car. I've tried to understand why Kid has taken this new route with his music, but nothing makes since. It's not like him to be so soft. It's not like him to have every song on an album sound the same. The only conclusion I could come to...... the genre this CD falls in is the biggest money maker in music today........ pop-country.
With this being said I have to say as a life-long fan I feel quite betrayed. Anytime I bought a Kid Rock cd in the past, I knew I would get a bit of everything..... that was the sheer beauty behind his music. A little hard rock, a little soft rock, some country, some blues, some pop and some rap.......and of course the occasional shit talk. I loved it; I don't know anyone who didn't. Kid Rock's music was always an ensamble of mixed emotions and tunes from his heart. He told it how it was, how he felt about things and he didn't give two shits what anybody thought. He built his fan base this way...... the fan base that made him what he is today. So where is our Album?
"Born Free" is not an album for the faithful followers of Kid Rock, but yet a tribute to his newfound fans. The same fans who idolize any bigtime pop country singer with any hot song right now. The unfortunate thing about these fans is they come....... and then as quickly as do...... they go. They get tired too fast and the meaning of loyalty escapes them. Before you know it, they're cheering on the next American Idol winner into stardom. I for one hope this happens sooner rather than later; and then hopefully the Kid will come out with a revival album telling EVERYONE to "Fu%K Off!"
I will always continue to buy Kid Rock's albums...... no matter how much lamer they may get. I have always bought his music and I always will. If anything, at least my kids can listen to the new stuff and I wont have to turn down the radio every other sentence. That and I will no longer have to buy two copies....... one for me and my enjoyment the other the Wal-Mart version for the kids.
I hope the kid's next album is like the days of old. Showing the musical talent he posesses and keeping us entertained throughout the whole album. I will always be a loyal listener and follower.... no matter what; even if he goes gospel. I will go to his concert this year, just like I do every other year...... but it may be my last one. If the whole concert is pop country oriented them I'm done. I spend too much money at these shows..... close to $600 everytime. I pay for everyone to party, but there can't be a party if everyone's falling asleep.
Please Kid.....please prove me wrong. Make me look like a huge jackass........ write a rock rap in my honor. Contrary to what you said on a CMT show..... rock rap isn't dead. You're the Micheal Jackson of rock rap. If you make it......we will still buy it. To this day there isnt one Kid fan that can honestly say they dont listen to devil wout a cause, or waistin time or cocky..... probably more than the new stuff. Until you revert to Hank........ this is going to be like a long ride on the "Rock n Roll Pain Train".
Fan for Life,
Andrew
I don't think he's a huge jackass... maybe a little dramatic or over the top, kinda feelings about the Born Free CD. I'm not feeling the Born Free CD as much as the others, but I don't feel betrayed or like he's left his fan base behind. I do listen to Born Free CD & like some of the songs, just doesn't stay in the CD player as long as the others. I like the direction of the music content he's singing about, as we all are getting older it makes sense. What I hope KR does on the next CD is not have the Rick Ruben influence & use his own band...I'm thinking that must be why I'm not digging this CD as much.
Amen
...I suspect Andrew is wayyyyy younger than me, thus, hasn't experienced as much life as me, and will appreciate the music as time goes on...I love it all!
andrew J...you first hav to experience life NOT just the rolling partys and GOOD TIMES to understand the album . every person I play it for says "thats KIDROCK" I say yes and they are like WOW this totally changed my view of the man I just thought they were one of those rock bands ... hard rockin..balls to the walls...and not in touch with the REAL people...guess ya PROVED me wrong KAT and my brother in law MIKEY E...loved Purple SKY...
Imho you made yourself look like a huge jackass. Kid has said he writes about his life, you really think his life is the same as before? No! The man has so much talent and I personally love every song on Born Free. He is an amazing artist that has proven he can rock out any kind of music.
I've been following him and growing up with him since the beginning. I like the mellow vibe of this album, but realize it is not for everyone. Look up some of the current footage from fans on Youtube and you'll find that this tour will not disappoint. He does everything from the current to the beginning highlighting "Yo-Da-Lin in the Valley" during the montage. You see the new fans lose interest, while the old get more fired up. There is no way to fall asleep at his current show with everything he's done. He's embraced the old and the new. There's more pyro and the dancers are back with the TBT being as strong as they have ever been.
I don't think you understand country fans, even the pop-country fans or have ever been to Nashville (feel free to correct me if I 'm wrong) whose music scene has clearly influenced this album. Country fans are probably one of the most loyal fan groups out there. They defend their artists and music like no other. He's smart for really exploring his country roots because those fans will help him age with grace and keep him current. The musicians and bars in that town are all about the music and a good time. I think that describes Kid Rock to a "T." He's always loved a good time and good music. He's friends with a lot of great southern rockers and classic country legends. This album just really shows that more than his others. The bands in any good Honky Tonk can and will play just about anything you could want to hear. His concert at the Bridgestone was an all night Kid Rock party on Broadway fueled by bourbon, beer, and bands in the bars after the show. I heard fewer complaints about what people didn't like at the show there than any other because the people are so open to any music in that town. It really is Music city. I don't think rock rap is dead, it just isn't the time for it right now. We aren't in the excess of the 80's-90's, but hopefully we'll be back to it soon and there will be a place for rock rap.
I guess, i went at it backward, started iwth rock n roll jesus, to born free. now i'm gettin into the older stuff, devil without a cause, cocky, lookin forward to checkin out the rest. I like the variety. He reflects in his music the variety he enjoys, there are lots of folks like it all too.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TOMMORROW
You know, part of his talent and his desire is to do what he likes best and sing. He is a talented and versatile individual whom I enjoy seeing each year. He is a few years older than me, but I have followed him from the beginning. Where he is at every stage of his music has seemed to relat to the point where I am and I love his music for that. Evolving through life and consistent change are facts of life. What I love is how he sings from the heart and means it. To me that is all that matters.
HE PLAYS NEW AND OLD AT SHOWS, hE ALWAYS HAS... tHIS TOUR HES EVEN SAMPLING FROM THE OL SCHOOL STUFF. So whats the problem. sheesh...
I think Born Free is one of his best cds to date. I, too, have all his cds and I think this one is my favorite.
The truly Great Ones will never write music their suppose to but, rather what they want to - except when Rick Ruben DEMANDS it!!!
I have also been a fan for a long time & I think that is what makes him so damn great ..he changes things up..I love the way he does that..No time for boredom!! Keep on making it real Kid!!
Damm...Pleasessss...Rock Knows What He's Doing (PT)
I've been a fan for about 6yrs now & I'm not gonna lie, I was a little disappointed when I first heard the Born Free CD. I do agree with some of what you said & I agree with what Videoace said, basically not doing the same old shit over & over. Lyrically Born Free album I think is great, just didn't sound like Kid Rock to me... in all his other CDs each song sounded so different from the next, not so much with Born Free. I hope KR goes back to the way he used to make his albums, if it ain't broke don't go trying to fix it! His concert I went to on the Born Free tour back in Jan. was still great, he played some of the new stuff & the old stuff we all love...he never disappoints live, he's a great entertainer. You should still go to a concert on this tour, you won't be disappointed.
Bummer ya feel that way! I have all KR's music-some I love some I like some I listen to and go Nawww nope not that one. Try the suffle button and ya get them all XD Giggle Giggle. I wasn't a fan of the Born Free cd-infact the first time I listen to it I was on my way to an auction and almost fell asleep because it relaxed me so much. My hubby laughed at me so "Devil without a Cause" got played- and on the way home I listened to Born Free again after a shitty day at the block. It was just what I needed! I love all the music he has made! The SHUFFLE button works try it try it you will see you will like it just like me! HUGS!
I can't help it but as a fan of his music and yeah i didn't truly get into him til Rock N' Roll Jesus i like the new direction. I have been a casual fan up until that point. I had heard so much rap rock saying the same tired ass shit over and over. Music is supposed to touch your soul not be popular with your friends or please everybody. If you don't feel it what is the point? I can't feel Kid Rock singing/rapping Devil Without a Cause 2010 sorry. It doesn't fit him @ this point in his life or career and if you expect him to keep making those records over and over you are crazy. Just keep playing the cds you enjoy. I have seen other supposed old school fans of bands i like say the same shit. I wanna hear you do shit like you used to. People grow, change, age, their own personal tastes change etc. Instead of deciding you don't like it you might try listening to the words/lyrics, hearing the southern rock which he sprinkled all through every cd from the beginning of his career, and taking it for what it is. A guy who has nearly raised his kids, fucked all the hoes, drank all the booze at the party, snorted all the coke and now wants to keep on keeping on. You can't party like you are 25 forever and act like it either. But you can age, grow as a performer/artist, and do the music you want to and enjoy.
I think he's just responding to different facets of his life. I personally love the evolution of his music but I can understand your point of view. I, too, would love to see him rock out on the next album. Perhaps he will. He's definitely not old at 40. In fact, he's on top of his game. Until then, have a Badass beer, pop in the cd, and give it another try.
well andrew. its cool you dig the old stuff. i know that devil without a cause is my favorite cd, but....lol (always a but huh?)
i say this a lot around here. "an artists never paints the same picture over and over". the mans life is changing. he's not a young punk ass kid anymore. how many ways do you think he can tell you he's a badass? fuckin hoes? gettin drunk?gettin high? cmon now. there is much more going on in life than that. sometimes when people reach a certain age, they dont feel so immortal anymore, and they reflect on what theyve done, and where they are heading.
most people that cant get past the rock/rap thing seem to be narrow minded (or just young) which is cool. "born free" is probably lyrically the best song ive ever heard from kid, and before you say anything, previously my favorite song was always devil without a cause.
the single born free just hits people because we have all felt what he's talking about at one point or another in our lives, but im rambling now so ill stop. lmao
anyway, sorry you feel betrayed in some way, and you have a right to your opinion, and you want to know why?
because you were "born free" lmao (had to use it, sorry lol)
