The new song “Born Free” will be the centerpiece of Kid Rock’s performance at Thursday’s Detroit Lions-New England game, the Detroit rocker said today.
The anthemic song will be stripped down then built up during the 10-minute halftime set, which will incorporate members of the Michigan National Guard in a show that that Rock described as “what I do best — a big Team America thing.”
Rock spoke with reporters this afternoon at Ford Field as he prepped for the halftime performance and looked ahead to his Jan. 15 concert there.
Tickets for the January show will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday.
Thursday’s nationally televised set will find him in a familiar role: serving as a Detroit ambassador.
“It’s great for the people here — give ’em a little slice of home,” he said. Other halftime acts tend to “go through the motions,” said Rock, who vowed that his show “will be bigger and more heartfelt.”
Wearing a pair of thick-rimmed glasses, the 39-year-old star talked about his growing sense of community responsibility, including a new initiative — “We’re All Detroit” — that will seek to bridge the city and suburbs.
Rock was also asked about a private campaign he has undertaken to purchase Thanksgiving dinners for about 1,000 metro Detroit families, via his Kid Rock Foundation.
“There are a lot of people going through a lot of things,” he said. “It makes me feel great — it’s a win-win.”
