You guys can pay attention to the critics if you want to, or you can read my review which is far more important, far more personal, and far more meaningful to both fans of Kid Rock, and fans of music in general. I have been around music for a long time, but more then that, I have been a fan of Kid Rock since he started this career. I have never worshipped the dude like some, I have never gave anything but my honest opinion on his work. No matter if I liked what he did, or did not like it, I knew I could always count on going to a show where I would get my monies worth, and ultimately I can say I witnessed this story from the very beginning. I have watched Robert Ritchie transform himself into one of the biggest Rock Stars of my lifetime, and being from Michigan, being a friend of many within the camp, I can walk around daily saying I am proud of what this man, this band, and all involved have accomplished. I have taken a few days, a few listens to let it all sink in, and I am going to share my thoughts on Born Free, Right here, Right now.. Feel Free to copy and paste, send to anyone you want, because this piece will be more informing then the reviews made by all the major newspapers and magazines.
Born Free, By Kid Rock
I have been a Kid Rock fan for quite a while now. It started when I was a beer swilling, smart ass teen who listened to rap music, sagged my pants, and told everyone and anyone to FUCK OFF. I purchased an album called Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast. The humor, wit, and talents of Kid Rock really played a role in the way I lived my life. I could go on and on describing the parallels between Kid Rock's music and my life, but its a waste of time, if you get it, you get it, if you do not, its probably because you have an education level that of a 3rd grader. I am now in my early 30's, or is it mid 30's? Well, either way, I have grown to be an adult mosyt of the time, and with that I have opened my mind, expanded my horizons, and have started listening to music more then just for a beat, or a hook. Lyrics have more of an effect on me when I listen to music then anything else, and there is no doubt the subject matter, the lyrics, and effect of Kid Rock's music has grown to proportions I am not sure the man himself could have ever imagined. I have watched it from afar, I have seen it up close, I have been a part of this magical journey in one way or another, and honestly feel as if I myself have grown along with it.
I have seen people say this album is soft, I have heard people complain that Kid Rock has lost his edge, I have even seen some people say there are done with Kid Rock and his music after this album. To me, these people so not understand music, they do not listen to music, they are not open minded, and their credability is lacking. The words and/or message being conveyed on this album is far different then anything Bob has ever done, at the same time, he is taking some responsibility on his shoulders that many artists today are afraid to do. It would be easy for Bob to jump into a studio and yell FUCK OFF, BITCH THIS, BITCH THAT, SHIT, ASS, CUNT, WHORE, COCAINE, WEED, LIQUOR, throw his middle fingers in the air, and sell a million records. What alot of people fail to realize is that this journey started way before Devil Without a Cause, and this man has listened to critics call him everything from a rock/rap wigger, to a hack, to even a theif when reviewing All Summer Long. Whether you are an artist, or you are just a regular joe, the last thing you want in life is to not get credit for your work, your abilities, especially if its something you have worked to perfection for years upon years. Kid Rock has surrounded himself with one of the best live bands in the world, he has also brought in some of the finest studio musicians in the world, and has collaborated with some of the most talented song writers, and what it has done has turned him into a well rounded musical genius.
Born Free, from beginning to end is filled with thought provoking lyrics, Lyrics that reflect on life, reflect on his career, and reflect on the state of the Country at a time when people are confused, scared, and worried about the future of their lives, their childrens lives, and the Country in general. If you put this CD in, and listen to the words, you undoubtedly can forget about your own worries, and be entertained, find an escape, find hope. Kid Rock has done just that on every album he has released, only difference being, the escape ultimately was the PARTY. This album relfects the times, but also reflects upon Kid Rock as a grown ass man. He is letting you know, through the words he sings that he has some of the same worries that we have, that even though he is a ROCK STAR, he is also a family man that has to reflect on life sometimes, look around, and realize people are struggling, and while he can't offer answers to everyone, he can share in our worries.
Kid Rock is not 25 anymore, The answer is not to down 20 shots, get some Kid Rock Tickets, and forget whats going on until tomorrow. This album is deep, it is lyrically meaningful, and it is showing a side of Kid Rock that many who have not been fans have never seen. I could sit here and question some of the production, I could question some of the pitches in which some of the songs are sung, but who am I to question a Rock Star for experimenting, or a producer? Instead, I listen to the words being shared, and I feel proud of Kid Rock for saying things that most artists avoid, doing something that most artists will never do. He has gone out of his way to prove his abilities, instead of taking the easy route and making another album of the same material that was successful before.
I can not wait to hear most of these songs live. I personally am excited to see what TBT and Bob do to thses songs to spice them up for the live shows. I think the Rick Rubin effect that may bother me on a song or two will disappear, and Marlon, Jimmie, Jason, Aaron, Freddie, Stef, Larry, Dave, and the girls will take this music up a few notches and give everyone the true rock n roll feel that maybe some feel is missing. This album shows passion, it shows an artist who is not afraid to progress, it shows writing that is beyond the scope of some pop music bullshit, and it gives everyone a little peak into who and what Kid Rock is all about, after the party ends.
Listen to the album, Listen to the words, listen to the message. This is one of the most well written albums I have heard in some time. I am right around the same age as Bob, I have lived my life in and around some of the same things Bob has, and I have seen alot of the same things happen in and around the city we love....
Bob is the biggest Rock Star of our generation,
Wow, Kev you really hit the nail on the head. Eventhough, I am new to the site I am not new to Bob's music. I have followed the changes in his music. I like how he has taken chances and shown himself through his songs. I agree with you, as he and we get older, our lives and experiences influence every thing we touch, his change is a reflection of life lived and the messages given are heartfelt and true. I love the new album and I am sure there with be more to follow maybe they will be different maybe not I know he will remain true to himself. Thank you for all you do for him and for all of us. God Bless You!
That was a nice read, but I see it more as a statement then a review of the Album Born Free though,
The first time I listened to the album, have to admit wasnot too thrilled, expected a different album, like it better now but wasnot blown away,
Do like God Bless Saturday,Flyin High and Care,Born Free great song too only the end woh , woh woh, woh goes on and on that part should have been different in my opinion, but who am I to say what KR should do,just a personal taste, bet it will be awesome live....,
What I wonder if the original idea was conceived as a three disc album ( correct me if am wrong ) each disc different kind of music , rap/rock/country ? , if that was the case I would have prefered a mixed of all three on 1 cd ,he might even have the songs already.
But youre right if I dont feel the mood to listen to FUCK OFF, BITCH THIS, BITCH THAT, SHIT, ASS, CUNT, WHORE, COCAINE, WEED, LIQUOR lol , and more to a relaxed Kid Rock cd ,the Born Free album is a great cd to put up.
That is a really nice review.. I feel that through the years I have grown along with Kid Rock and his music. I have to say that if you listen to every album it is a great reflection of everything he was going through in his life at the time, and some of his fans share similarities in there life and to hear it in words the way he put them for me has been an inspiration, and like he says "if it's real, you'll feel it" .. and those words are the truth.. I am proud to be a Kid Rock fan and you can ask anyone I know and some I have told don't talk smack about the guy until you really listen to his music :)
Hi Kev, I finally got time to read your review and wholeheartedly agree! Been awhile since I've read your stuff and I have missed it. You have a way with words yourself. Nice to be back in the fanclub and seeing some faces I recognize from the old KRAA days. Will have to post that pic of me and you on my page at the Cincy show when I grabbed you for a photo and to say hi. I think a drunk girlfriend then pulled me away so I didn't get a chance to talk much. Hope you didn't feel used! lol The shows are so much fun! I can't wait to see what he does this go round! Can't concentrate on work today for worrying over getting tickets later.
Anyway, I could have used a few more rockin' out tunes but it is what I expected. A beautifully written, and performed, piece of musical art! He absolutely did what he said he was going to and I would have been disappointed in anything less!
Just one question, isn't Kid Rock turning 40? If you are right around the same age as Bob wouldn't that put you at the late 30's rather than early or mid? lol

The thing that is most impressive about this release, is that each time you listen to it, the more you hear. (I know I have said that once before, but to me its worth saying again) I know of so few albums that I can listen to the entire thing, and not skip through songs...only a small handful comes to mind. Examples like AC DC Back in Black, Whitesnake, just to name two. Born Free has been one of those rare albums where I can listen to each song, and not have the urge to skip, because each song is so good. Each song stands entirely on its own, and it is difficult to pick favorites. I have been pretty much stuck in this CD since I got it, and like a good book I can't seem to put it down. Largely becuase it keeps my analytical brain, entertained. A rare thing indeed!
Just a thought, I wanted to add for individuals feeling that this album is country. I am not saying this to offend anyone, or get anyone on edge. I have been a fan of country music since birth, and can remember being very small singing out Alabama hits in the back seat of the car. My thought is this: Country has been merging into a more rock feel for the past 15 years or so. If you listen today's country compared to country released even 20 years ago, you would really hear a big difference. On the other end of the spectrum, it is difficult to point out clear rock and roll (nothing else merged into it) in todays music. It almost seems as though the country music community has picked up where rock has fallen off, and the country you hear today would have been considered rock 20 years ago. So, my thought is that while some people hear country music when they hear this CD, to me they are really listening to old school rock and roll. Just a thought...
I am so impressed with Kid's new album, but would anyone of us expect anything less from him???
I believe it's his best work yet, with both music and lyrics. And it's only gonna get better!!!
Just with he'd make a playdate in montana!!
Kev,
You kick ass! Excellent review! I Love the new CD!
KEV ROCK....you mentioned you picked up extra copies of Racing Father Time.....do you have one to sell to me?????
And I totally agree with your review. This album is not the pimping, taking strippers for breakfast Kid Rock (who I adore)....this album is something more....he's grown as a man and as an artist.
While I'm sure the economy and recession haven't affected Bob himself since he's clearly a millionaire and will be for the rest of his life, but this album reflects an appreciation for the average Joe and what so many (not just the people of Detroit) are going through. Its musical and lyrical genius. Its staying in touch with "reality" instead of staying locked in the bubble fantasy life of a rock star.
It says a lot about the man. It says a lot about the artist. "Born Free" is an album that witnesses the evolution of Bob as both.
Kevrock I have read many of your opinions and reviews of Kid Rock over the years and I honestly think this is your best one yet! You cetainly tell it like it is. I have to laugh at all saying its not what they expected...is any new album of his EVER what any of us expected? I think not! LOL

Todd, the first time I listened to the album, I thought along the same lines as you are. I personally point a finger at Rubin, as I slowly watch Bob do the same thing. It seems subtle, but I think Bob is telling us, Rubin kinda took him on a journey, and he rolled with it. I think the album as is, is different, but at the same time, every time I listen, I catch something new. Would I rather see Bob do an album like Cocky, or even Rock N Roll Jesus? Sure I would, but last time I checked, I do not call the shots. I think the album is pretty fucking ballsy. I think thats the Kid Rock Spirit, He does what people tell him he cannot do, and he succeeds. I know Bob is growing up, but I also Know Rock can still party with the best of em, is still as cocky as anyone, and I really am excited to see what his next move it..
Predictions.. HITS - Collide, and Care. I think Care is incredible and intriguing. I could see the Mary J Blige version doing magical things if given the opportunity. I could see Country Playing Mary J, I could see Pop playing Mary J, I could see R&B playing Mary J. The other version with Martina Mcbride, I could see Country playing it, and maybe knocking off the T.I, i do not see her crossing over into the Pop world as easily. It will be interesting to see what trigger gets pulled.
Collide is the follow up to one of the best duets of our life time. I think it carries on the story. I think it crosses over and hits big.
I honestly think Midwest Fall may be one of the best songs, NOT TO MAKE THE ALBUM.
It's gonna get interesting. If Bob wants to prove to us he has some tricks up his sleeve, he should pull some of those tricks, COOCHIE GALORE.
All in All, I am sure some Kid Rock fans are totally turned off, that is why I wrote my review. I think people need to think, and listen differently.
All good Tho. Todd, we have had our battles, but we have also been around for a long time, and I have nothing but respect, bro.
Anyone who knows me knows that KR is my Elvis. Seen him live 10 times, even flew to Detroit to see him and was amazed at how he is coveted there (and I love you Michiganders)! Hubby and I went on the cruise and had the time of my life. Going on the next one, too.
I was first in line to get this cd---skipping through the store so very excited.
Not what I expected-especially hearing "Born Free" and "Times Like These" live. Total different sound and vibe than the cd. So I agree with Kev that it is different live.
Always expect the unexpected.
Do I wish there was more "rock"? Yes. Am I disappointed?
No.
You can never be wrong in art.
Art comes from the heart.
How can the heart be wrong?
Todd the Rock God... You know I love ya man... didn't see your name for awhile....
just keeping you on your toes ; )
I hate that we can't have a critical discussion about music, and KR's music in particular, as an art form in the abstract. why do we always need to go for personal attacks? Whether it be attacking KR himself as a person or any fan or non-fan who has an opinion--it really is out of place. Why can't share our opinions, discuss and debate and perhaps learn and expand, and leave the personal crap out of these kinds of discussions.
Just a thought.
I think I spoke too soon when i said i was disappointed about the album. I heard once or twice on facebook and expected a So Hott, or Bawitaba. I took KevRock's advice and really listened to it, the lyrics and all the songs from beginning to the end. I dig it. I look forward to seeing it live. Thanks for the advice.
KEV ROCK You know I love ya man.
BECKXY Why you coming at me like its some battle? I am a huge Kid Rock fan I just happen to agree with Kirsten and Petera65 what's wrong with that?. Why you getting so personal. By the way Bob was in great spirits when I took this shot. I was an invited guest at his Private CD release party in New York (as I am an all around nice guy in the business) so this picture will not be coming down anytime soon, but thank you for your concern .
AMEN!!!
Kev, I LOVE your review, as I feel the same on a lot of your thoughts.
You could write 100 more pages and I'd love to read em'
As for someone whose in the music business.. you have to have an open mind about
the different genre's of music out there....
whether it's a singer/songwriter, a guitar player, a producer......
or a DJ
Todd, your out-numbered, time to take down that picture with you and Bob who clearly doesn't
look happy with getting his picture taken with you. And, Baby, Rock On !!
New CD is great Kid! Keep em coming for another 20+ years
Johnny Cash would be proud I bet..
Love this new C.d. can't wait till next one..
I disagree with the focus being only on Detroit and hard times here in our state. I see this album crossing barriers and breaking sterotypes. In fact, yesterday I gave this album to a patient of mine in her 50's, who rode home with her sister of the same age, son in his teens, and mother in her 70's - the report back to me today was all good, full of new perspectives of Kid, and the young & old members of their family liking the album! Personally, this album is speaking to me on the cusp of turning 40 this year, no matter that I live in the great state of Michigan. I can relate. I am also grateful I can pull out Kid's previous music and still relate. Kid is no "flash in the pan" so if you don't like this album, just wait for the next... We all know he is not washed up and done.
I appreciate the review, KevRock.
Cmon Now, you really think its about money???????? Kid Rock has all the money he could ever need. This album is about RESPECT. This album is a big giant FUCK YOU to all the critics who have spent the last 10 years calling him a hack, calling him a piece of shit, saying his music has no taste, no relevence, and saying he is nothing but a flash in the pan.
I will be the first to tell you I would love to see Kid Rock release an album like Cocky, or Devil, but at the same time, he has given his fans his all on every album he has released. I think this album served a whole different purpose.
I am not going to sit here and tell people what they should like or not like. I gave my 15 page review to tell people how I felt. Todd, you of all people should know that what I say goes a hell of a lot further then anything you say.
I guarentee these songs all rock live, I know for a fact these songs will remain timeless, and most of all, I know Kid Rock has a trick or two up his sleeve for all the people who want to hate.
Kirsten and Patera65 I 100% agree with your truth and humor and it didn't take you 15 pages to get your point across. WELL SAID : )
I bet David Spade has something to say about this album. Sorrry, but I understand that this is where the money is, country music. That is fine but mix in a little hip hop, jazz or soul. I will always be a huge Kid fan, Looking to the future, Being sober dosen.t mean boring. I have never had a drink in my life. Say hi to Taylor Swift for me.
Awesome review Kev....I ? the new alblum....
Sounds like some Mellencamp B-sides from way back. No more Cougar in Mellencamp, no more Rock in Kid Rock. Sorry.
Who knew the kid could do, the badest thing without an FU!!!! Nice job!! Great music!!!
