If someone said I could be any rock star I wanted, I would probably take Sammy Hagar. After attending Wednesday’s Kid Rock concert at the California Mid-State Fair, I may have to reconsider.

The Kidster, born Robert James Ritchie, put on a powerhouse 110-minute performance in front of over 10,000 hard-partying fans in the Main Grandstand Chumash Arena, his first appearance ever on the Central Coast.

The suburban Detroit native has come a long way since his early 1990s start as scrawny, trailer-trash rapping singer/ DJ. But there is probably no other artist who crosses and melds as many pop music genres as Kid Rock: Hip hop, roots and southern rock, acoustic ballads — he’s got it all covered.

And the show reflected this artistic evolution as Rock went from old “lassics like “Cowboy” to “Lowlife” and his newest good-time anthem, “God Bless Saturday,” both from his latest release “Born Free.”

A new trend with live performers is mixing verses from popular songs into their original numbers. Rock somehow managed to include “Midnight Rider,” “Cat Scratch Fever,” “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” and even Tupac’s “California Love” in various song renditions during the show.

Not only did Rock pay homage to these musical influences but he seamlessly transitioned from country-infused ballads to guitar-driven party rock. How many entertainers can play a reflective piano ballad like “Lonely Road of Faith” then charge into a raunchy, hard-rocking “So Hott” and pull it off?

Aww man I didn't get to hear Lonely Road Of Faith at the show I was at. That sucks! I love that song! That would have been so cool to hear live! I don't recall ever hearing that song live and I've seen Kid Rock in concert about 5 times or more by now.

I also agree, I always liked Kid Rock..... But since seeing his concert in Louisville KY, My friend and I had to head to Riverbend in Cincinnati to see him again. These two were the Best concerts in my 43 years of life. I think like bourbon and wine you get better with age. We are heading next to see him this month (Aug) in INDY at the Verizon Center. *** Can't wait... I have never done this before in my life (seen 3 concerts of the same person within months of each other). But it is the best concert ever... Bobby "KID" is a true performer and the whole crowd gets into it. Hope my seats are as good as the last two.. CANT WAIT!!!!

The first time I heard "For the first time in a long time" I turned it cause I thought it was embarassing to hear Kid Rock try and hit notes no man should. About the 3rd time I came to it, I played it and to hear him be so real, and not give an effin thought to what people expect or demand. Just singing from the heart, with words and emotion that I have felt before. It's like he is a guy that once came to a party and was sitting in your living room jammin. And the high pitched singing is sweet to me now. Like the way 1st loves write you songs or sing to you & not be afraid that you will laugh. Kid Rock is never going to be given the credit & admiration he deserves because he is the real deal. I get chickin skin and tear up when I hear him sometimes. That is pure rock n roll, country, gospel, blues, whatever you give him he can sing it. I pretend to be Sheryl all the time, she is a lucky chic!

I had the pleasure of seeing Bobby in Paso Robles & in Mt View CA two days later...he is the TRUE American baddass because he can do all that he does with all the different genres that NOBOBY else today can do! His music demands to be FELT!! His shows ROCK the F'N house to it's core!! His band is right there with him every step of the way and it's a show that shouldn't be missed! I am a fan for life and will be rocking with the K-I-D as long as I am breathing!
