Kid Rock may have turned “f***in' forty” this year, but the genre-busting star showed no signs of middle-age burnout during one of the baddest shows only a “motherf***er quite like me” could pull off when his Born Free Tour pulled into a packed house Saturday night at Irvine’s Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.

“I know how you get down Los Angeles, Orange County,” the Detroit kid told the crowd, which responded forcefully following a cool opening: a snippet of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” - ending with the line “just a city boy born and raised in South Detroit” - while a slew of pictures of the rocker and his friends through the years was displayed on screens.

For close to two hours, the self-proclaimed "American Bad Ass" rocked a venue full of trophy wives and girlfriends in appropriate cowgirl attire, alongside shirtless "bros" and executive types who left their suits behind to let loose with Rock’s raunchy music - like the older guy I spotted wearing a pimped-out green velvet sports jacket and a black cutoff shirt.

Rock, who when shirtless showed off a lean body and California tan, provided the perfect country-crossover scene via a Western saloon backdrop while sporting a modern country look via jeans, a black shirt and a variety of cowboy hats. (Although at one point he traded in his headgear for a godawful trucker hat like those Von Dutch ones made popular a decade ago.)

I can't believe I missed you in California, but so glad the fans who went to see you had a blast. Its kind of hard to go to an arena after seeing you on the MotherF--king boat and being so close. Well I will have to wait for the next cruise and enjoy what you do best. You rock!
