Kid Rock Serves Himself -- and Fans -- At Sleep Train Concert

Kid Rock treats his recent 40th birthday like it was a milestone for everybody.

The rapper/singer's show Tuesday night at Sleep Train Amphitheatre included a ditty called "(Expletive) 40," and a video montage detailing four decades' worth of important world events, highlighted by Kid Rock selling millions of albums.

The Kid-centrism also encompassed photos of Rock standing beside Jay Leno, Hank Williams Jr, high-ranking U.S. officials and several strippers whose names the audience didn't catch.

Among Rock's many fine qualities is an ability to turn over-the-top bragadoccio into charm. For instance, he did not appear to be showing off his celebrity buddies to inspire envy, but to let fans in on the thrill.

The surfeit of photos told the regular Joes, Jeffs and Ashleys who came to Wheatland that without them, the Kid would not be where he is now: hobnobbing with stars and still racking up platinum album sales.

The latest to go platinum is "Born Free," a heartland-rock album from which Rock and his nine-piece band (when counting backup singers but not exotic dancers) drew freely during Rock's two-hour show.

But they drew just as freely from older material, since Rock would never shortchange longtime fans by focusing too heavily on new songs.

Bobby, you are like an unstoppable machine! I know there must be days when you just don't feel good or are understandably exhausted, but the show always goes on. You always give us everything you have to give and more. I, for one, love you very much and appreciate everything you do and the important things you stand for. KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON, ROCK! AND, THANK YOU!

What a thrill! My 1st outdoor concert (I was worried that my knees would give me problems). The hell with the knees. From the VIP barbecue (which was excellent) to the end I was impressed. Had a few beers at the barbecue and people watched, bought T-shirts and tank tops, then on to the show. I did not sit down because I was too busy singing along. Your talent and compassion are admirable. I liked the mixture of music and how the stage was set and draws you right into the moment. I thought My God what it must take to put on a wonderful show like that--absolute perfection. All your thoughts and ideas come to fruition. Good job! Your fans are true fans, from the boisterous to the little guy (sitting next to me) just singing quietly along to every song to the ones who imitate Kid Rock to a tee. This concert was a highlight for this summer for me. Getting ready to scrapbook the entire event with my daughter-in-law. All the articles I have read about the event were a great big thumbs up by Sacramento. Looking forward to your next CD. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

I was at this concert last night (7~26). I went initially due to Sheryl Crow. I like Kid Rock's music but didn't consider him in my top favs. After being at the show and watching him perform I realized he is an entertainer, a true rock star! From the guitar, to the drums to the turn tables, he was amazing! So much energy and talent on the stage! Explosions, Flames, Strippers, Bad ass guitar playing, Saxophones, Drums, it was a buffet for the senses. I came away from this concert loving Kid Rock! I am now a fan!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading everybody's comments on this one. I can relate with to what Marian and Mom2300 wrote. A long while back in the 90's... my sis n law had this huge thing for Garth Brooks. I never paid much attention as it wasn't reflecting to what I was listening to at the time. But I got to asking her.. what is it about him that you love so much. She explained that there's just something about how he treats his fans.. how he shows he cares.. plus the fact that he was quite talented... and he did have a HUGE following. So I began to take notice more.. seeing him perform on shows.. and did take notice to his love for his fans and how passionate he was about it. Needless to say.. I did end up getting a few of his albums.. 'Shamlessly'..haha But anyway, I see the same qualities in our man, Kid. He may have not begun that way.. but over the years.. he'd begin to show more of his heart on stage, in his lyrics, in his statements, and still be that Rock n Roll rebel son that we all come to love. I know for a fact that he's a kind hearted person and LOVES his fans : ) Just that lil bit of kindness goes a long way to a fan like myself.. it only makes me wanna drop everything just to get to another show as soon as ones over ; ) And that goes for TBT just as much... yall are the best

NO,,,hes not one to showboat his fame ( he does seem to get cranky at the photo hogs in hollyweird though) I think they come with fame) The price you have to pay) But nobody can be nice ALLLL the time ! I love his humbel personality that comes across more often than not (but thats my opinion) He seems to be a kind hearted person. Thats why alot of his fans feel such a personal closeness to him I believe. Im a huge fan of his music and his personality makes it easy to love him :) Huggs to Mr Rock please :) ALABAMA

Oh and one more thing. Everytime I think of Lucky vitimins and Cheerios,I think of Kid Rock. Maybe he should be on there box. I once bought a bottle of Jim Beam for a cold just because KR was on the box . I'm looking at it right now on top of my desk.He stares at me everyday from that box. LOL

Marian, I agree with you. Kid Rock-(Bob Ritchie) sings from his heart and his experiences...I do believe. Serious musician's will tell you that and are able to acknowledge that fact in another musician. I play guitar and organ, and, a lot of my experiences go deeply into what I play. My oldest boy got me into Kid Rock year's ago and I have loved Kid Rock ever since then. If at home, I put his music in, I HAVE to dance. Last night was the FIRST time I have EVER danced, hollered or anything at a Concert. There is just something about, Kid Rock. I wish he were not stopping, but I guess we all have our "thing". My youngest, age 10 1/2 yrs, just loves him and sings to his songs. Like I said, he capture's the hearts of younger and older...alike. He is a wonderful person and a great musician. His music will live on in all of us...always. And, I wish him the best in his endeavor's from hereon. I want to wish you a wonderful Happy Birthday, Kid...and a wonderful life.

The very first time I heard Kid Rock sing,to my knowledge,he was not rich and not famous. He was a cool guy with lyrics that said something and meant something. To me it seems that Kid Rock stays true to himself and in todays world is very hard to do considering that every thing You say and do,someone is judging your every move.I believe that he lives his life from his heart and in doing so remains true to himself and his fans. He doesn't do things just because someone expects him to,he does things because it is what he believes he should do. I admire that. I trust that as Kid Rock grows older (and) wiser, his music will reflect that growth. Whatever KR comes up with,I am sure I will buy it because he never disappoints. His music, his concerts, etc. And sometimes when I am having a bad day,I turn on the internet and there he is,a picture,a video, something to cheer me up. How cool is that. I think he reads his mail and cares about his fans. What else could anyone ask for. A fun-loving,right on time,Rockstar. And if one day KR decides to change his name because he is no longer a (kid) anymore,I'll buy whatever he puts on the cover cause he has great tastes too. At the last KR concert I attended,(I always watch the big screen)I thought I saw a tears in his eyes, not sure why, maybe he was having a bad day.Til this day I remember that about that concert.Although the concert was great,it upset me to think that anyone or anything would bring a tear to his eyes. He is Human too. Rich,Famous or Not.Kid Rock fan 4-ever. And my little bis.Butt newphew loves him too. When You can capture a childs heart, that says something too.Out of many artists my 3 year old nephew loved (3)and when he saw the KR vid.for Born Free he would say Again-play it again) So I hope that all artists keep children in mind as they create,as children are the next generation of fans.I'm sure children would love a concert too.

Wow...Kid Rock's Sac show was absolute DYNAMITE! I have listened to him for some time now, but that was my FIRST concert put on by him...WOW!! I LOVED IT! He truly "ROCKED" that place! He draws younger and older alike. Not many artist's can do that. There is just something about, Kid Rock. He gets you moving!! And, his energy? Whoa!! By the way, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KID..

I have to agree with GreenBud............Come on August 12th!! This has been an extremely LONG wait (got the tickets on presale day!) My first Kid Rock concert! YAY!!!

It was nice to hear alittle bit of everything this time around, it seemed so much more alive at the show to hear the old and the new. He's making history in front of our eyes! I agree that Sheryl Crow was very low key while she performed. Her voice and talent can't be hiddden but her stage presence was lagging a bit. My friend Cathy said all she has to do is tap her toes while Kid Rock jumps around the whole time. I know she's not a spring chicken and I guess it does catch up with you especially when she brought her children along with her. I enjoyed it anyway, it was a nice night.

Words cannot express how amazing the concert was last night - EPIC!!!!!!!!!!! This has to be one of the best concerts I have ever seen.... I'm in WOW mode over the talent Kid Rock possesses: piano, drums, guitar, turntable, harmonica.. the list goes on. I'm thinking at 40 - AMAZING SHAPE!! p90x has NOTHING on your energy!!! I love the acknowledgement of the fans with the current economy.. He really appreciates his fans! I would definitely see him again.. Trying to hit up Mountain View this Friday... American, Blue Collar, Country Boy!! Love it!

I'm almost 54 years old and I think Kid Rock is the 1st ever entertainer that's been able to hobnob amongst the "elite" and still remain REAL! Coco loves ya Kid! You're simply the best! Happy Birthday and many many more! I plan on being at you're 50th, 60th and 70th too! :)
