Kid Rock Says He Cares What Detroit Thinks Of Him

    June 15, 2011

Kid Rock covers the July issue of Men's Journal, and in it he talks about his lifestyle, turning 40, and his commitment to Detroit.

Some highlights from the Rock story:

On his Kid Rock Chillin' the Most Cruise: "I didn't know what to expect. I said it was either going to be the best time of my life or the absolute worst. And it was the best. It was one of the best times I've ever had. An absolute riot."

On his taste in movies: Rock isn't a fan of "the Hilary Swank movie where you walk out of there with tears and just feel terrible. I can't handle it. I just want to see somebody fall off a ladder, the boy and girl go home to a big pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and feel great about myself. I don't want any drama in my life — not even in a (expletive) movie. Not even when it's… What's fake? Is it fiction? Even if it's fiction, I don't want it. I just want to be happy and have fun."

On cleaning up his lifestyle, to a point: "Whatever your thing is, if it's pills, cocaine, smoking weed, when you slow that down — which I've done a lot of — you've got to relearn how to drink. That's the (expletive) hardest part. You used to be able to go all night. Finding that balance has been interesting. I still black out here and there, but nothing too serious."

On partying in Malibu: The story makes reference to celebrity parties at his Malibu house with invitees that include Sean Penn, Scarlett Johansson, Mary J. Blige and Zac Efron.

On working out with surfer Laird Hamilton: "Laird's running the show. He's the guy yelling at you the whole time. (Chris Chelios) won't work out with him because he yells at him too much. He leaves me alone a little bit because he knows I'm the skinny kid in the rock band, but he's real fun to work out with."

On helping Detroit: "You don't want Kid Rock making public policy. Well, some people might. I just see where I can help out, which is to inspire and raise funds and things like that."

On his image in Detroit: "I really care about what people think of me in this town, because my son is here, my family is here, my roots are here. I don't (care) anywhere else, but here I'm very conscious of it."

    The issue hits newsstands Friday.

For Christ sake...could you please just facebook or email me? Im saying to you that my 24 year old nephew died last year and he loved you and I love you too. Cause your demeanor and your lyrics remind me of him. I am an older partying lady who loves your song....that says "god I wish I was that young again" and my nephew loved all of your songs. Either way....any way....you and him were so much alike. I think you looked alike. Handsome, 6 foot tall, grungy, self confident, sexy...I don't know what it was. But, it was something. God love that boy who died a week ago today and god bless you who has been going strong. No doubt the universe is unfolding as it should....gods bless you both.

My first Men's Journal purchase. Congratulations on the cover. I haven''t read the article yet, although it prompt me to wikepedia research hedonist. In what year did you make the cover of the "Rolling Stones?"

Read the article, loved it, such a great ambassador for the Great State of Michigan. Very giving individual,I bet all previous rivals are jealous with envie. I am also from Michigan and the people in Michigan LOVE Kid Rock, so any article, in any magazine, or newspaper is special to fans, keep up the great work, also the ocean's nice, but so is Lakeville Lake and all the other Michigan Lakes!!!!! Would be great to see you out on the Cowboy baby....

Totally relate on the relearning to drink thing. I had to do that too, especially newly single!! Had to learn to drink responsibly.....well most of the time!! My son is also going away to college this year, also from Michigan. You are an old soul but young at heart. I am turning 40 in October and they say that "life begins at 40" so live it up and keep doing what you are best at!!! Love all the articles and getting to know what you are about. Keep Michigan as your home-town forever. Nothing like the St. Clair River!!! Oceans are cool but Lake St.Clair is better, just saying.

Picked up a copy, love the article.* OUTSTANDING * Thank you for giving! And sharing a day in the life of Kid Rock. You do live a dream. I think it's something to be proud of that you fly home after your shows to be with Jr.. Says a lot about who you are. I have to also give a shout out to the road crew you have. These guy are the unsung heroes behind the sens. I listen to these guys move the show for hours after the show in Huntington WV., from the RV parked a block away. Lots of work. No small under taking for sure. And thanks goes out to Jim Beam for the video from Flint. A small place is always a great time, up close in your face. Stage was so small, bet ya had trouble not step'n on one another. Cool place for sure. Enjoyed the article Bobbie.... Am a major fan think the world needs many more Kid Rocks. Be a much better place to live. See you out there soon!

So, I was in Target the other day when my sister came up to me, in her hand was the Mens Journal! Didn't hesitate a second to buy it!!! She was laughing and said I was probably the only woman to buy "Mens Journal". I said; "I highly doubt it with "Bobby" on the front"!!! LOL! Well, anyways as always I enjoyed Kid's input, the pictures and the down to earth insight that the man has! love you for what you do, and who you really are!!!!

Awesome picture and article! It's good for the silly people that aren't fans! It gives them an opportunity to see the other side of Kid-Bobby. Because you can't have one without the other! Love you and all you do! Best wishes to Jr as he goes off to college. Two of my kids are thinking about Vanderbilt. It's a good school, and I'm sure Jr will do wonderful! Keep on Rockin' and I will see you in St. Lois! Still hoping for a meet and greet! The show will be great as always, but a meet would be fkn awesome!

Kid Rock is the greatest piece of eye candy I have ever seen. It is just something about him. He is sexy, One day I hope to get the chance to get him to sign my posters of him. Hope he keeps on doing what he is doing for a long time to come. I think he is going to be one of those men, who no matter how old he gets he will still be a great looking MAN. Love ya Kid. Keep on ROCK'N.........

It's good to see local celebrities care about Detroit and help out. It sets a good example for younger people to do the same. It's nice to know that Kid Rock does care about Detroit and what we think of him. Everyone starts to slow down with the partying in your late 30's. VBG It's just part of getting older. Unfortunately, you just can party like you did in your 20's. VBG As an entertainer, I can see that Kid Rock has matured with his music from going to a rapper to a singer. Not all rappers can actually sing. Kid Rock has proved he can sing, he has a good voice and is talented. I think he's on the right musical path. I'm sure he's making some good money from his last 2 CD's since he's moved to the mainstream music. He's songs are being played on more radio stations where people (like myself) would not have listened to his music before as a rapper are listening to him now. Kid Rock keep up the good music and all the good you do for Detroit!
