Kid Rock Plots 'Rootsy' New Album, DVD Releases

Kid Rock's latest album, "Born Free," has been out barely seven months, but he's hatching plans for its successor.

"We've already started writing for the next record and talking about the feel and where we want to go with it," Rock told Billboard.com during a press conference Thursday announcing an Aug. 12 stadium show in his home town of Detroit. "I think 'Born Free' was kind of a transitional record with [producer] Rick Rubin and going into the rootsy, American blues/rock 'n' roll vibe. I'd kind of like to go back to something like maybe a 'Cocky' feel -- that record, but knowing more now and trying to put those elements together."

Rock says he's particularly aiming for a blend of "some really good, fun rock songs to some of the country stuff to some of the mix of hip-hop and rock and blues and try to make a nice mix of a record. But a fun record, not serious. Rick Rubin made me a little serious."

Rock stressed that he's still in the beginning stages of a next album but added that, "I'd like to get it out sooner than later -- but I say that every record. I'd love to get it out for next summer. Is that gonna happen? I don't know. I'm getting the process down where you go in with a lot of great musicians and just lay it down; there's not all this wizardry and trickery on the computer. If that process works again, it'll be sooner rather than later."

Rock has plenty of other things on his plate for the summer, of course. After a June 18 show in Atlantic City he hits the road with special guest Sheryl Crow on June 2 in Cincinnati. He'll also be hosting the CMT Music Awards for a second consecutive year on June 8 in Nashville. "I'm happy to be asked back," Rock said. "I thought it went pretty good last year and I kinda wanted to duck out this year, but it's tough to say no to MTV Networks and Viacom when their ratings were good and they want you back. I definitely look forward to the performance part. We've got kind of a fun intro that's either gonna be really good or really bad."

Rock's other future plan includes coming to terms with video footage he's accumulated over the years and possibly making some commercially available in the near future. "It's something I struggle with," he acknowledged. "I've probably shot six DVDs, professionally, had them edited and everything. But it's like anything; if you go see a sporting event or whatever, it's always better live. It's just tough to capture it on tape."

Nevertheless, Rock promised that "there will be something... I think for Christmas" and possibly from his recent show at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which he called "one of my best performances to date." He added that he may also consider releasing live footage via his web site.

One thing Rock won't be doing, however, is a Comedy Central roast that was slated for Aug. 14 at Detroit's Fox Theatre. Rock said that the cable network wanted to switch the location, and he felt adamant that it be held in Detroit. "I'm not going to go to L.A. or Las Vegas to get teased," he explained. "If they come to Detroit and create some commerce here... and bring their big production and they're putting people to work, bring it on. If they come to Detroit, the roast will be on. If they don't, no deal."

I would love to see a DVD out before Christmas. Might be a little wishful at this point though. Dec 2 - 23 days to hope still. :-)

Wait, I've got a few stockings that you could fill up your DVD's in for Christmas Kid. Hoe,hoe, hoe! Hee,hee,ha!

You got that straight Kid, I was wondering what ever came of that roast on Comedy Central. I thought I missed it as-per-usual. I've always jagged my friends about Hollywood and LA (especially the ones that live there), I'd say; "Hollywood is gonna have to come to me, the hell if I'd ever go out there to live in my car." And my cousins would say; "Yea, not in our family." Coulda, woulda, shoulda....I'm in a much better spot that any of that BS type of life style.....At least Kid has the balls to knock them down a few knotches and isn't so damn desperiate like most of those plastic people are! It's good to stand your ground no matter who you are! You go boy!

I have been to many of your concerts but I was just at the August 19th show in Chicago and you were just amazing. I think I enjoy your show more every time I go. Can't wait for the new album and to see you again! Rock on Kid!! Love you so much!!! I don't get to get out much due to money but I know going to see you is a guaranteed great time and that every penny spent is worth it. Can't wait for the DVD!

I work at Verizon Amphitheatre at Encore Park and see about 30 -40 different concerts a season. You have not come to that Amp yet, but I’m still hoping maybe next year. I have to say that you put all of those concerts to shame. You are the only artist that I actually enjoy listening to as well as attending as many concerts as possible. Your concerts are full of energy, and always get everyone’s adrenalin pumping. I love your music, the person whom you are, your morals, and “That Bad Boy” image but total sweetheart interior. I’ve attended the Born Free Concerts @ Gwinnett Arena, The FedEx Forum in Memphis so far, and will be at Aarons in Atlanta on Aug 28. Also, I’m actually trying to swing the Cruise as well, but not 100% sure. Kid, you are a totally genuine person, and not fake. You tell it how it is, and respect your fans. You can tell that you really enjoy doing what you do…. I really am glad that you have actually starting do some interviews and sharing some details about your life. I can’t wait for the DVD’s, and hope that they are out by Christmas!!! -MK

Glad to Hear about the new Album and the fact that you are going back to music like Cocky. I love the way your Albums are a little mixture of evereything so you don't know what to expect. You show your soft and serious side, and then explode with energy . Your one of few artist that is so versitle and able to show your love for "The Bules", tune in to "The County Side", pump it up with the Hip Hop and Rock n Roll. Keep doing what your doing. We all love you kid!!!!!!

I think its a good choice to MAKE them Come to YOU ~ good approach for that topic. BUT with LIFE its a Good Approach to meet it HALF way and be patient if ya really want it to work, flourish and Grow..we all need our breathing room some more than others. and being able to Stretch is VERY good for ARTISTS .

Roll On Kid! Thank you for being you, for your music and for your pride in the "D". Even though I live in Brighton - it means a lot to know how much you care about your home state! Next time you visit the BadAss distillery in Webberville drop in to Brighton (I've got BadAss in the fridge and a bonfire in the backyard!)

Dear Kid, Wow! What a transformation your life and career have been! I have followed you/your music for over a decade now and have experienced much spiritual progress (while still getting high) as a result.... Thanks for staying true to yourself and true to your soul for all these years! I wonder if you, the artist you are today, were to meet the Kid Rock (who sang "Devil Without a Cause" with such passion and fervency for "the darker side of life") would say to one another? Blast from the past man! Thanks for all the great tunes...especially the fresh ones: Born Free, Amen et al.... Regards from the LOU! Mike Coffer "The Loan Cowboy"
