Kid Rock Plots 'Rootsy' New Album, DVD Releases

Kid Rock's latest album, "Born Free," has been out barely seven months, but he's hatching plans for its successor.

"We've already started writing for the next record and talking about the feel and where we want to go with it," Rock told Billboard.com during a press conference Thursday announcing an Aug. 12 stadium show in his home town of Detroit. "I think 'Born Free' was kind of a transitional record with [producer] Rick Rubin and going into the rootsy, American blues/rock 'n' roll vibe. I'd kind of like to go back to something like maybe a 'Cocky' feel -- that record, but knowing more now and trying to put those elements together."

Rock says he's particularly aiming for a blend of "some really good, fun rock songs to some of the country stuff to some of the mix of hip-hop and rock and blues and try to make a nice mix of a record. But a fun record, not serious. Rick Rubin made me a little serious."

Rock stressed that he's still in the beginning stages of a next album but added that, "I'd like to get it out sooner than later -- but I say that every record. I'd love to get it out for next summer. Is that gonna happen? I don't know. I'm getting the process down where you go in with a lot of great musicians and just lay it down; there's not all this wizardry and trickery on the computer. If that process works again, it'll be sooner rather than later."

Rock has plenty of other things on his plate for the summer, of course. After a June 18 show in Atlantic City he hits the road with special guest Sheryl Crow on June 2 in Cincinnati. He'll also be hosting the CMT Music Awards for a second consecutive year on June 8 in Nashville. "I'm happy to be asked back," Rock said. "I thought it went pretty good last year and I kinda wanted to duck out this year, but it's tough to say no to MTV Networks and Viacom when their ratings were good and they want you back. I definitely look forward to the performance part. We've got kind of a fun intro that's either gonna be really good or really bad."

Rock's other future plan includes coming to terms with video footage he's accumulated over the years and possibly making some commercially available in the near future. "It's something I struggle with," he acknowledged. "I've probably shot six DVDs, professionally, had them edited and everything. But it's like anything; if you go see a sporting event or whatever, it's always better live. It's just tough to capture it on tape."

Nevertheless, Rock promised that "there will be something... I think for Christmas" and possibly from his recent show at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which he called "one of my best performances to date." He added that he may also consider releasing live footage via his web site.

One thing Rock won't be doing, however, is a Comedy Central roast that was slated for Aug. 14 at Detroit's Fox Theatre. Rock said that the cable network wanted to switch the location, and he felt adamant that it be held in Detroit. "I'm not going to go to L.A. or Las Vegas to get teased," he explained. "If they come to Detroit and create some commerce here... and bring their big production and they're putting people to work, bring it on. If they come to Detroit, the roast will be on. If they don't, no deal."

It would be GREAT to have a DVD. That one lame "insomia" DVD that Netflix rents out (that is supposed to contain archival footage and interviews with you) SUCKED. Don't know why they are still renting it out and making money on it. Just a bunch of wanna b's talking about who knew Bob back when. It will be wonderful to have a Kid Rock endorced DVD of performances! Can't wait til the next CD! Anything you do will be from the heart..........sounds like a good mixture of music.

Thanks for your stand on the Comedy Central Roast staying in Detroit. You, walk the walk, and where most entertainers leave their hometowns and head off for bigger and better, you show what most stars do not have, integrity. What you do for Detroit and for Michigan, does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you Kid.

I hope KR puts out a DVD, no it won't be the same as seeing him on stage but I think it would still be good. Wow working on a new album your a busy man, Cocky is still one of my favorites. Seen you in Thackerville last month with my son and daughter in-law can't wait to see you and Sheryl Crow in Albuquerque with my husband in Aug.

I was so happy to hear yesterday that the next album will have a more Cocky feel to it....I can't wait!!! =))) KID has 6 DVD's but doesn't feel they're as good as the real thing....I have an idea, take 1-2 of the best performances from each DVD & put them on 1 DVD & sell it....I know I'd buy it.

Rock I think we would all the love the DVDs - I've had to make my own from what I capture - its nice to be able to see it on the live screen - we watched you on the cruise first night with the birthday party - was anyone disappointed - I think not, we had a good time as if we WERE watching you live...you felt the energy from the crowd - hell you feel the energy from the crowd just signing along to your own songs without the band...I say bring it on!

One more thing. I do not know why,but everytime I hear that song Darkside by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, I think about Kid Rock. Maybe because of the sax and the high energy in that song. OK I'm out!

PLEASE KID PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS. I HAVE NEVER MISSED A MICHIGAN CONCERT. FROM BOYNE TO COMERICA PARK, DTE TO GRAND RAPIDS. IF YOUR ONLY COMING FOR A NIGHT OR TWO, PLEASE MAKE YOUR SET LIST BETTER. ENOUGH WITH THE COVER BAND ACT FOR THE BIG SHOWS. IT'S NOT FAIR! AS RECENTLY AS FORD FIELD AND COMERICA (BOTH NIGHTS) YOU DIDN'T EVEN PLAY ONLY GOD KNOWS WHY. COME ON ROCK, STOP TRYING TO OUT-DO SPRINGSTEEN AND PLAY MORE OF YOUR OWN MUSIC. YOUR MOST LOYAL FANS DESERVE THIS MUCH OUT OF YOU! I JUST WANT TO HEAR ROLL ON AND ONLY GOD KNOWS WHY, LIVE, ONCE AGAIN! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What ever You come up with should be great. It would be very difficult not to enjoy whatever You sing because of Your voice. Something just about Your voice. OK I just wanna tell ya something weird. Tonight I went out to eat at a local place. As soon as I walked in there was a man with his back to me(did not see his face)Had on one of Your T-shirts. Kid Rock 2011 tour. Now that is not the wild part.At a small club next door,as I was walking to my truck,I heard a drummer pounding on the drums, kinda sounded like the way You play them. When I got to my truck,I said to myself,I better ride by the door and check that out.You just never know. Nope, not Kid Rock. Sure sounded like Your drumming to me. Somewhat. Hey,who knows where You are. You could be just about anywhere in this world. I Love the way You pound the drums. High energy. Why don't You do a solo on Your new album. That is one thing about Your concerts that I Love is when You get on the drums. Well gotta go. Have a nice morning where-ever You are.

So glad to hear that Bobby is looking at releasing a DVD. Fans love to watch the artists perform for those of us that have seen you live many times, I would only suggest that your DVD truly represent your shows. If they are "cleaned" up the DVD wouldn't be a Kid Rock show. I have the live performance recorded on my DVR from the show in Malta. Although, it is good it wasn't a true Kid Rock show! LOVE that a DVD will be available to purchase, true it isn't like a live show however still give us your music to listen to live. Thanks!!

No DVD can be as good as the real thing, but PLEASE release one. Your fans want what we can get when you aren't touring. :)

Been waiting for years (been a fan since 1998) for a DVD, I agree it's better live but it's great to Rock the night away with a live DVD or Bluray once in awhile.

There may be times when you feel as if you have taken a million steps towards your dreams and acted on your plans only to find yourself in the same place that you began from. At times like this, you must not give up. You must continue on. Though you may feel lost, bewildered and alone, continue to believe in yourself. Do not allow discouragement and doubt to blur your vision and wash away your dreams. Visualize your way beyond the detours, standstills and obstacles. Whatever the hurt of the moment may be, it will pass. Tomorrow is always a new dawn... ~ "putting people to work, bring it on." LUV U CHEERS:)
