Kid Rock at the Air Canada Centre

So let’s be straight about this: I was hating life on the way to see Kid Rock at the Air Canada Centre on Friday night.

Hating life. Hating, hating, hating, hating life. You don’t need the details, but it was a crap day – nay, a crap week – and drawing the assignment to review Kid Rock directly interfered with seeing the one show last night that I’d actually been looking forward to for a couple of months, U.K. songstress Anna Calvi’s Toronto debut at El Mocambo. I don’t hate the Kid or anything, but past experience held that, unlike Calvi, the skeet-iest of skeet-y white Detroit rap-rockers was not going to embody the Second Coming of P.J. Harvey and, moreover, that I’d just wind up bored and alone and pissed off at everyone around me at the ACC while they all got off to “Cowboy” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Jesus” and I wondered why the hell I chose rock criticism as a job when, clearly, the gig was only created to frustrate and trample upon the passions of real music fans. Blah blah blah. Then it started raining when I left the house and I missed both the Queen and King streetcars and the knee I blew out a couple of winters ago started aching so I had to take a cab and spend half the cash I’d set aside for $10 ACC beers and blah blah blah a little more.

Hating life. I was hating life. But then a funny thing happened: Kid Rock totally kicked my ass. He totally kicked my ass.

I see a lot of shows, folks, and that was one of the finest, most smoothly executed and – and this is a big one – best sounding arena gigs I’ve been to in ages. Like a Vegas show, it was, and I’m pretty sure Kid Rock would recognize that as the compliment it is, in this case, meant to be. The dude has grown into a proper, all-around entertainer, and you can tell from the effort he’s put into this tour that he’s working for it. He wants to be that guy, the all-things-to-everyman, white-trash Michael Buble. And, damn it, after a few wobbly years of trying to parlay his early infamy as an unlikely hillbilly hip-hop MC/DJ double-threat peddling Licensed to Ill-redux rap/metal meathead-ism to the blue-collar masses into respectable adulthood as a self-appointed Southern-rockin’ heir to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bob Seger, he’s got it right. He’s really got it right.

Backed by a 10-piece ensemble that kinda felt like the E-Street band with a turntablist in place of Roy Bittan – complete with large black man on saxophone – the man known to his mother as Rob Ritchie smoothly navigated between heroically crowd-pleasing riff-rock (the Metallica-sampling “American Badass,” “You Never Met a Motherf---er Quite Like Me” and the aforementioned “Cowboy”), Dixie-baiting good-time drawls (“God Bless Saturday,” “All Summer Long”) and pointedly brief digressions into balladry at the keyboard (“Care”) or the acoustic guitar (“Picture”) for two hours with nary a lapse in showmanship or pacing. In the middle of it all, he sucked down a double-shot of Jim Beam whilst blazing some scratch-turntable science on the decks, blasted off a coupla ZZ Top and Ted Nugent licks on the guitar and then finally decamped to the drumkit to propel his band through a few bars of “Cat Scratch Fever.”

Think Kid Rock’s getting a bit too old to keep on pimpin’ on the way he always has at 40? No worries: he’s got the hilariously self-deprecating-but-not “I’m F---ing 40” (“But Bruce Springsteen is f---in’ 62 / And the Stones are almost dead”) in the set list to let you know he knows, with video clips of John Stewart, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel wielding a giant penis to wish him a happy 40th on the big screen. Thought the drag-the-stools-to-the-front-of-the-stage acoustic segment was already outstaying its welcome after two numbers? So did he. And he got Beavis and Butthead to say just as much. Right before sparks start raining down all over the stage and lazers start shooting everywhere and Kid Rock takes his shirt off and every woman in the crowd goes utterly freakin’ mad and the girl in front of you who fell down four songs into the show starts making out with her gaunt meth-head boyfriend like she’s gonna do him right there and the first, undeniable rumblings of “Bawitdaba” crush forth from the P.A. and you think: “You know what? For once, I think I’m gonna stay for the encore.”

I’ve seen Kid Rock on pretty much every tour he’s done since Woodstock ’99 and that killed all of them. I’m sure Anna Calvi was amazing, too, but it’s nice to receive a message up in your rock-critic ivory tower once in awhile that the “other half” lives how it lives for a reason.

On your disertation of Kid Rock's performance and growth...Well, I couldn't have said it better ! The man is AMAZING! ! A true entertainer and has a talent hard to be reckoned with...Real, true, original....What's that one song he wrote awhile back, "You will never meet another M'fer qutie like me?" True be that ! He's got it going on, for sure! Glad he turned your day of hating life into a happy day in the neighborhood, dude.

Awesome review Busy!! That's exactly how I felt about the Edmonton show!! Too bad we had a total dip-shit, shit-for-brains asshole reviewer from whatever paper!! Ef them!! Kid you were amazing in Edmonton too - I'm still wet!!

I, too was having a crap day. Fruitloop ex boyfriend tormenting me all day with nasty texts...and the icing on the cake...a fake suicide notification which had me sitting outside on the corner of York and Front calling the cops in my town to go and see the bat-shit crazy mofo when I should have been inside soaking up the Kid music (loud) and even more gin martinis than I was. I want to say that a) I am glad your ass got kicked and you liked (dare I say loved) the show. I am not surprised! and b) I've seen him too many times to count and this was indeed the biggest ass kick of them all. "do you believe that rock and roll can save your soul?" and c) I very much enjoyed the post...well done! Cheers!

Saw the show last night in London, Ontario. OMG! It was awesome!! The band sounded great and of course Mr. Ritchie was amazing! His voice is so true. He did not disappoint. Oh and by the way he looked so hott!

Thank you SO much to Kid Rock for coming to London, Ont. last night.....the best concert ever seen there!

I went to the London, Ontario show last night and it was just as great!! I was having a rough day before this concert too as I was suffering with a cold and had an awful sore aching back. Today I am feeling just fine thanks to the Kid's fantastic stress-relieving show last night!! I saw lots of fans there doning the "Made In Detroit" apparrel...it felt awesome seeing fellow supporters there and the Kid acknowledged the Michiganders who made it out. There was a before the show "Motown Party" (everything Detroit) outside the JLC in recognition of him, which I thought was a nice gesture :)....But "Aint No Party Like A Detroit Party!!" and I can't wait for Comerica Park this summer too!! :D

Awesome review! But you never have a bad one. If someone ever gave your concert a bad review they are clearly an idiot. I can't wait to see you for the 3rd time this year in August!! Comerica!!! Can't wait!! Love ya!
Nixx Bieber's picture

yeah.... he got it totally awesomely RIGHT and the gigs, just rock N roll !!!!! :-) I love reading the reviews ( well its a tit bit of a torture for me, since we live overseas and cant go to any of the shows. ), but so far all the reviews were good reads. Some of them so vivid, I almost could feel, hear and see it. I hope I dont regret not hopping a flight to end at one of the Canadian Destinations to see a show, cause working for an airline at an international Airport is quite tempting for travels and I am so desperate for a life show, like this. All you folks going - I wish you a rocking time!

Susie if you love him now you will love him so much more.. he blew me away the first time i saw him in concert..you really have no idea how great he is til you see him in concert.. radio and videos dont begin to do him justice..

What a great review, finally a Canadian music critic that actually has his shit together. July 3rd is getting closer and I will be seeing Kid at summerfest. Can't freakin' wait. This will be the maiden voyage for me but hopefully many more to come. He is an awesome person and shows his fans how much he appreciates them, whether he's performing or just hanging out. Keep on keepin it real Mr. Bob Ritchie. You are sooooooooo hottttttttttt! You are the desktop picture on everyone of my computers. It really gets attention at work ;D LOVE U KID!!!!!!!!!!!
TraceyB's picture

ya buddy..even a stuck up critic realizes that Kid Rocks even though he doesnt want him too..I kinda got the idea that he was hating life from the first review but then most critics are i guess.. thats what makes them critics.. good for him that even though Kids music may not be his cup of tea he recognizes his talent and showmanship and how can he not?? Kid is as real as they come and the fact that he can incorporate so many genres into his music and it still kicks ass is what makes him so great and what makes him appeal to so many different kinds of people and ages.. he will rock til hes 82 never mind 62!
lionesse65's picture

We already knew that KID gets better and better with each song, but nice to see that the critic finally seen the light and gave KID the recognition and praise he truly deserves. He may be frickin 40 but the man can entertain. Never a dull moment at a show, and not too many sit downs either. The only concerts ive been too that I want to stand the whole time and sing and dance to his music. Bobby Ritchie you totally kick ass and im so happy the whole world is finally seeing it too. Keep rockin it Bobby, Your not getting "old" your getting better with age. luv ya.

I am a Detroiter and have seen my fair share of concerts, in fact too many to mention. I am no kid (no pun intended) but I saw Kid Rock for the first time this past January at Ford Field. So far no one holds a candle to him. I was in love the first time he opened his mouth to sing. He totally mesmerized me with his songs, antics and all around showmanship!!! I am not so patiently awaiting to hear if he will play Comerica Park this summer, and I can't imagine going through the summer without at least one concert from him. It was the biggest party I have ever attended and guess what ? There was no trouble as has been rumored at his shows. I think everyone was just totally lost in him and his music!!! Keep the music coming and keep it real as always.
