Kid Rocks And Raps And Sings

Kid Rock turned forty this year, but there’s no stopping him just yet.

For nearly two hours Friday night before a roughly half-filled Air Canada Centre, the Michigan rap-rock-country artist attempted to meld all three genres with success on some occasions and other times not so much.

After a short snippet of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing, a brief but very detailed video overview of all the musician’s accomplishments, sales and hits was shown. A rather odd choice considering most fans would probably know much of that info already.

It didn’t seem to matter to his fans however who had as much fun belting out hard rock numbers like You Never Met A Motherf----- Quite Like Me as they did swaying arm in arm to a country-laced, beer-raising ditty like F------ Forty which described the Rolling Stones as being almost dead.

Back by his longtime Twister Brown Trucker band, Rock came out wearing a sleeveless white fur vest as flames and fireballs shot out from the stage during American Bad Ass from 2000’s The History Of Rock album. The choice of wardrobe seemed to make as much sense as the stage design, resembling a saloon from the ‘60s western television show Gunsmoke only with green lasers, the occasional scantily clad pole dancers and pyrotechnics.

With a Canadian and American flag on either side of the stage – and with smaller flags emerging from Rock’s stage riser during Only God Knows Why – the singer seemed to get a lot of the rapping out of the way early on during Cowboy and a medley kicked off by Somebody’s Gotta Feel This. Although he still has the chops to deliver the rhymes with passion, Rock has found his new home in a mix of country rock and softer Southern ballads.

“Cheers my Canadian friends,” Rock said after plunking himself down in a lawn chair – beer in hand -- in the middle of the catwalk running into the audience. The laidback approach suited Rock easily as he nestled into a handful of fireball-less numbers such as Flyin’ High and the thoughtful Care, both from the new album Born Free.

Near the close Rock, two guitarists and two backing vocalists plied their wares quite nicely on the roots-y, inviting Purple Sky before Rock and one of the vocalists nailed the sweet Picture which was cut short a bit by a Beavis and Butthead video.

Bawitdaba capped off the main set as flames, lasers and fireworks only highlighted this brief theatre of the absurd. But judging by the loud fan reactions throughout, they lapped up everything regardless of what they saw or what genres they were hearing.

Opening for Kid Rock was East Coast act The Trews who played a solid 45-minute set of hard rock. Highlights included So She’s Leaving, the poignant Highway Of Heroes and Hold Me which included a healthy portion of Led Zeppelin’s When The Levee Breaks.

This man is a musical genius with alot of heart & soul poured into everything he does. He cares about others, donates to numerous charities & puts everything he has into his shows. He does not rip off his fans & gives them more than their money's worth at his concerts. He truly cares about family, friends & the hard working man & woman. He is humble & stays involved in the community in which he lives. Anyone who does their research would see what a genuine, true & caring person he really is.

And this explains his dislike lol (as on his website): 'MacNeil (modestly referred to as King J to friends), a diehard Philadelphia Flyers fan, has seen the Rolling Stones in a club setting, thereby knowing he will rest in peace at some point down the road.' Guess the Friggin 40 Stones comments hurt his feelings... http://www.popmatters.com/pm/archive/contributor/35/ And it does look like it was him sulking in one of the best seats in the house sadly.

I was at the show. This was probably the guy sitting right at the end of the cat walk in a blue shirt that appeared that he could care less to be there, while those around him were having an awesome time. He actually stood out from my viewpoint just a few rows up and to the side. What a shame a prime spot like that would be taken by someone that could have easily sulked up in the nose bleeds. As far as half full, I'd put it a lot higher than that, and also note that this is the largest gig Bob has ever played in Toronto. Normally plays the Amphitheatre which has much less capacity. Was an awesome venue last night. I've seen Bob every time he's been to Toronto that I can remember, including back with Run DMC and Aerosmith, along with having been on both cruises, and last night was one of the best shows I've ever seen him give. Absolutely loved it. Loved the stage, loved the show, and above all loved the music. Perhaps the Sun will ask some of the other 15000+ fans out for their opinions on the show and leave Mr Macneil to covering the next J-Lo concert. Great show last night! Awaiting KRC3 News now :)

I agree with Kimberlina the critic doesnt understand Kid Rock because he is not a fan and he was paid to go to the concert,, the rest of the fans paid to go there and loved it because they love him and all he does including me.. A suggestion to consider is adding: ~Lay It On Me (it was perfectly performed on the cruise).. Some more of UR old school hip hop songs please. The crowd really gets off on it. Please consider doing a hip~hop battle incorporating yourself, Paradime, Uncle Kracker (if he's in town) and Champtown was always funny during UR R&R Revival Tour. Anything KR & TBT does ToTally Rocks, just some thoughts to consider. Keep on'a Rocking!!! Hope U all have an amazing Memorial Day Weekend!!! :)

The Canadian critics are a bit harsh. Kid is number one in our eyes in Michigan and we will be rocking London tonight.
