A push-it-to-the-limits opening night turned into a sleep-in morning for many on Kid Rock’s cruise, but the second wind was kicking in as the ship chugged across the deep blue Gulf of Mexico early this afternoon.
Thursday night had been a Detroit-heavy music night, with sharp performances by the Howling Diablos and Ty Stone, the latter coming in tight and road-tested after weeks on tour opening for Kid Rock.
A planned midnight showing of Rock’s 2009 Comerica Park concerts was scrapped (“I left the DVD at home,” he apologized), and footage from his guest-studded January birthday gala at Ford Field aired instead. Cruise-goers, many of them decked in colorful masquerade costumes for Mardi Gras theme night, danced under the video screen as the film played deep into the night. Rock was spotted out and about, cigar in mouth, popping into the midnight show by R&B band Envy, which featured his backup singer Jessica Wagner as front woman.
Today will be busy: a crowded schedule that includes a belly flop contest, cannonball diving competition and a class that will teach advanced lap-dancing skills.
